As Manny didn’t immediately retire out of this might mean he’s weighing trying to play still somewhere else, but Gillis is within his rights to decide a player’s not fit to play. If Gillis has the medical backing, which he does, he can put him on IR as well.

For those that are still confused, IR is not LTI. The Canucks get no cap relief from this, all IR does is free up one of the 23 roster spots. Kesler will play tonight, returning from injury, so it’s a small gain in that we wouldn’t have to send someone down to make that roster spot otherwise, but I don’t think anyone was going to suggest we couldn’t afford to lose Ebbett to waivers or Schroeder wouldn’t be sent down temporarily even if losing Ebbett was a concern.

But Manny has plenty of fans around this league considering what a character, classy person he is, and I know at least I wish him well (and hope he finds a home in the Canucks front office or staff somewhere).
