Lets put ourselves in Mr. O’Reily Sr. and you as a dad has been involved in your sons career. Are you not going to sound off on the frustration that his son is going through just because the Avalanche are so cheap.
Some of you may think he is an unproven player but many many managers think otherwise.
And who the hell are you ? Is it you thats writing O’Reilies Cheque? shhhhhhhhh
Players should be able to make as much as the market allows them. PERIOD n shhhhhhhhh

avalanche management owes it to the team to get the best return possible. oreilly is making it harder for himself and the team to get him playing somewhere else.why would some gm make a huge rfa offer to an unproven player.the guy has one good year.if he was smart he’d take a bridge contract and then cash in after two more years of proving himself.these people are acting foolish going public like this.

This isn’t minor hockey, dad. Let the player, agent, and team work this out.

Here is the way I see this from each side:

AVS:

They don’t want to hand out UFA-type salaries to their young RFA’s. They are pinching the pennies a little bit, but as a player, you are either on board (ala Duchene) or you’re not. They are finding this out in a harsh manner.

In Duchene’s case, he accepted his deal and is currently leading the entire team (d-men included) in ice time, as well as points. He sucked it up, went out there, and is earning his next contract.

O’REILLY:

He slipped to the 2nd round of the 2009 draft, but there are only three players in that entire class who have more points than him: John Tavares, Matt Duchene, and Evander Kane (all went in the top 4). He looks at Tavares and Kane, who make $5.5 M and $5.25 M, respectively, and then Duchene and him who are falling $2M short. He feels like the Avs are being cheap and the organization is costing him money.

At the end of the day, there is about a 95% chance he is traded imo. At that point, he will still have to negotiate a deal for more than $3.5 M per, start fresh and earn the trust of a new coach, and show that he can at least hit the 20 goal mark or eclipse 60+ points.

I think the kid has really painted himself in a corner by not accepting the deal and showing what he can do on the ice. It will be interesting to see who ponies up the cash to pay him and welcome he and his emerging “entourage” to the organization.

I agree…management is charged with the responsibility of building a team…they have done a poor job, and this is an example. THEY should be the ones practicing saying “do you want fries with that”…if they honestly will not pay the kid, then fine. Trade him, and NOW…regardless of how they feel about O’Reilly, they haven’t done their job. Trade him and get someone in there to play, or sign him.

The Avs hold all the cards? Really, Mike? Have you looked at where they are in the standings? They are dead last in their conference 6 points out of a playoff spot. Unless they are writing off the season, they NEED a return on O’ Reilly NOW!!! If they are writing off the season, Av fans probably won’t be terribly understanding of management’s position.
