Don Cherry on Evander Kane: ‘To say a thing like that is absolutely asinine’

In late December, Don Cherry stood up for his “buddy” Evander Kane after the Jets forward came under fire for his infamous ‘money phone’ picture.

Now, he’s doing the exact opposite.

Cherry blasted Kane prior to flying to Winnipeg for Friday’s Jets-Penguins game, saying Kane’s comments — claiming a good portion of the criticism he gets is because he’s black — are “absolutely ridiculous.”

“When he says stuff like that, it gets the crowd against him,” Cherry told Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun. “Of all the places, Winnipeg — an absolutely ridiculous thing to say. And whoever’s advising this kid better start advising him, get him under control.

“Because to say a thing like that is absolutely asinine, as far as I’m concerned.”

Cherry has long been a fan of Kane. In 2009, he had Kane appear as one of the touted draft prospects on Hockey Night in Canada prior to Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals between Pittsburgh and Detroit.

But now it seems Grapes has soured (sorry, had to) on the 21-year-old.

“When you act like he acts — if his name was O’Shaugnessy, he’d still get criticized,” Cherry explained to Friesen. “To say it’s racial is ridiculous.

“He’s gotta stop and grow up, keep his mouth shut and just play hockey.”

Just what we need, an idiot’s opinion of another idiot.

Totally disagree Don Cherry is right ! This dude dealt the race card from the bottom of the deck, so to bad that people responded to it ! There was a time when no white man would walk in a black man shoes example Jackie Robinson ! I would walk in Evander’s shoes enough said !

Not quite….. we haven’t heard your opinion- which would count as that idiot’s opinion of another idiot you make reference to above.

When things go bad. Play the race card. Pathetic.

  3. jpdoc26 - Feb 14, 2013 at 6:50 PM

How does Don Cherry have any credibility again? 1 NHL game played and 0 Stanley Cups as a coach. Shut up, Don.

    • hockeyflow33 - Feb 14, 2013 at 6:53 PM

How many games did you play that qualifies you to discredit his opinion?

Hate his personality all you want, saying he knows nothing shows how little you know.

They should ship his ass to Atlanta where they draft black players to encourage their fan base.

  6. bricktop02 - Feb 14, 2013 at 7:51 PM

The race card is getting old. Try and and come up with new response when thing go wrong.

Like taking personal responsibility instead of trying to be the victim? They don’t teach that any more in our Liberal world.

Bottom line here is it’s a results driven business and if Kane wants to go blow up twitter paging the money team then you better be scoring and winning. Hes making 5 million this year and has been very average at best..

If he was shooting the lights out and the Jets were winning no one would even care.. It is simple, start scoring and winning games so you silence the critics.

  8. govtminion - Feb 14, 2013 at 8:24 PM

It bothers me to be agreeing with Don Cherry on almost anything, but… here I am nodding my head while reading his words. Wow.

    • manchestermiracle - Feb 15, 2013 at 10:49 AM

Yeah, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and again…..

  9. ironmike778 - Feb 14, 2013 at 8:32 PM

Cherry is spot on. Of all the idiotic things athletes say (see the Baltimore Ravens), the comments by Kane rank right up there. The race card has gotten OLD.

  10. deezenucks - Feb 14, 2013 at 10:06 PM

Say what you want about Cherry, he knows his hockey, shows much respect to all who have earned it and speaks his mind, and I for one love him for it.

  11. stevedurbano - Feb 14, 2013 at 10:10 PM

Look, race is a factor whether you like it or not. Is he playing the race card? Yeah. Do the fans look at him differently because he’s black? Yeah. I’m not blaming anyone, just get over it and move on….

    • roddypiper69 - Feb 15, 2013 at 12:06 PM

Maybe you look at him differently…… that would make you the racist.

  12. rflashj - Feb 14, 2013 at 10:21 PM

Obviously race. Look how nobody criticized Patrick Kane for all of his shananagans. And why did nobody criticize Patrick Kane, because he’s . . .OH, you mean the media did criticize Patrick Kane for the same type of stuff as Evander Kane? My bad.

  13. wisbadgers - Feb 15, 2013 at 12:26 AM

I’m sure Evander Kane would be considered a douche for this hit if it was him and not the golden child, Duncan Keith.

    • macjacmccoy - Feb 15, 2013 at 7:11 AM

Um I dont consider or call anyone a douche because its such a formerly trendy thing to say that only 12-14 year old kids should use because it makes the person saying it seem like a childish, ignorant, hipster which is ok if you just got into middle school because your just now getting a little freedom and you dont know any better.

But anyway I know who you’ve been talking to (probably 12-14 year old’s) but I don’t remember many people giving Keith a pass on that elbow. Most people thought it was a dirty move and he was called out accordingly for it.

    • roddypiper69 - Feb 15, 2013 at 12:07 PM

      You amigo…. are the douche.

  14. tackledummy1505 - Feb 15, 2013 at 2:50 AM

Come to Philly Kane, cause if you say it’s racial there then we know you’re a head case more than just a guy under pressure and lashing out. Wayne Simmonds is one of the more beloved Flyers here (other than Giroux) and the only guy we rode was Russian. That Russian has finally put people in their places and has made me out to be smarter than the rest of the people here. Kane we could use your talents and you play Flyer hockey, so the door is open.

  15. macjacmccoy - Feb 15, 2013 at 7:31 AM

Well if your opening the Flyers’ front door for Kane them Im opening their backdoor so the rest of us Flyers fans can push him out the second you let him in.

Dont get me wrong he’s a hell of a talent but his attitude and maturity level is not wanted in Philadelphia. That’s the reason Holmgren tore apart the team in the first place. The Flyers had to many guys with attitude and maturity problems and it destroyed the locker room. The front office doesnt want those kind of players any more and Lavs sure as hell doesnt want them. Who wants to root for a guy who complains, takes plays off, and acts like an idiot in interviews or posts his idiocy on twitter for the world to see. Especially with the kind of money he’s making. I dont want a guy with his on and off the ice problems taking up nearly 10% of the Flyers cap.

He’s not nearly worth the money he makes, talent wise yea , but team wise no. The negatives he brings to a franchise, imo makes him worth less then $3.

    • edwelsh8 - Feb 15, 2013 at 8:15 AM

Yeah, it was a good thing Holmgren eliminated the immaturity Richards and Carter brought to the team, because no one could win a Cup with those guys around.

  16. mclovinhockey - Feb 15, 2013 at 8:51 AM

I am surprised Don Cherry knows what the word asinine means.

  17. pwilson264 - Feb 15, 2013 at 1:09 PM

don cherry, when is this asshole ever going to just go away, maybe he should join the circus. he dresses the part.

  18. ducksk - Feb 15, 2013 at 10:09 PM

After, well, forever, I finally agree with clown cherry.
