As an Avs fan and watching this season slowly slip away to injuries, this situation really sucks. The management team needs to either pony-up and pay him or get something in return for him. This is a short season which could allow for teams that aren’t a “full-season” playoff team could sneak in with a few win streaks…get it done soon or start preparing for another season of mediocracy.

Yeah, I don’t think we’ll ever get another deal like the Stewart, Shattenkirk deal from Colorado ! If, they were to do a deal with Colorado for O’Rielly, i think they would like a little more to compensate for the previous said deal !

If I was an Avs fan I’d be very pissed at management. You don’t wanna give him $5mil/yr, we get that, but there has to a compromise. I have a feeling they’re low-balling him. Like I said before this guy is in the mold of a Ryan Kesler and could be an excellent #2 center and defensive stopper. On a team struggling to score (and win) you gotta give this kid a deal and get him on the ice.

look at his giveaway/takeaway numbers and you’ll see that while he has high ceiling the height of his floor is what gives him so much value this early in his career.

The Leafs should be interested and have plenty of good young talent in their system. They could easily make a good deal with the Avs.

That’s a fair point. Many owners seem quick to bleed the bank on an UFA (don’t get me started on the hypocrisy that started during the lockout) yet will throw their own under the bus come contract renewal.

I remember the days of Patrick Roy, Joe Sakic, and Peter Forsberg. What the heck happened? Ownership has gotten incredibly cheap and unwillling to negotiate, it’s either their way, or you’re gone.

I have a feeling Avs fans are going to be left with a bad taste in their mouths if/when he gets dealt – they have zero leverage in any trade negotiations now that this type of stuff is coming out, look at what CBJ got for a disgruntled Rick Nash…odds are the return is going to be even weaker than that.

He’ll be a good pick-up for anyone that can afford it. Seems like on one side the Av’s are saying ‘no, you haven’t earned that paycheck yet’…but on the other side they want as much in return (roster player and prospect) as someone who HAS earned that contract.

The Pens should be interested – if either he or Sutter can be used as a wing.
