Video: PHT Extra — To healthy scratch, or not to healthy scratch?

Feb 12, 2013, 5:34 PM EDT

What do NHL veterans Dustin Penner, Joe Corvo, Alex Goligoski, Brian Boyle, Ryan Whitney, Alex Kovalev, Shane O’Brien and Ryan Smyth have in common?

All have been made healthy scratches in the early part of the 2013 regular season.

In the latest PHT Extra, Brough and I discuss how these guys have dealt with being dropped from the lineup, and how it might affect them moving forward.

Do coaches and management risk losing their players by making these moves? Sure.

But is the risk any greater than keeping an under-performing player in the lineup during a shortened season?

Watch the video to find out.

Only the most egotistical of veterans will be put off by being a healthy scratch. At the beginning of your career being a HS comes with the territory. In the later parts of your career it means you’ve made mistakes and need time to chill and lessen your liability. You have to grow and learn as an individual to play on a team. I eagerly await one of them to make a comment about the coaches decision in their frustratiom…tread lightly, boys.

So, Dustin Penner is still Dustin Penner. And absolutely no-one aside from Kings fans are surprised. At least his contract was relatively cheap, even for his utterly lazy, sluggish, one-way play.
