The Avs want a little lesser deal over shorter term, similar to Subban’s recent deal. That way, O’Reilly gets a chance to prove last year wasn’t a fluke and the Avs don’t have to qualify him for some huge amount like they would if they offered him a 1 year $5M deal. It’s risky to give him big money over longer term as well, since it’s only one year of offensive production and he might just be a 30-40 point guy with a good all-around game.

O’Reilly brings more to the table than points, no one doubts that and thinks he won’t be able to contribute in some way, but it’s risky to pay to expect both longer term but then find out you only get one side of that game. The one part you do get better be one of the best in the league if you’re going to overpay for it.

He wants somewhere close to $5 mil, not sure on the length. The Avs have offered him 3.4 per for 5 year and 3.5 for 2 years, he declined both.

The article only gave dollars on the Benn contract – didn’t say what O’Reilly was wanting – has anyone heard?

Points production is important to the Avs (his absense proven that) but he’s also one of the top two-way forwards in the league, the kid had more takeaways than anyone else in the league last year – hard to put a number on that.

Yeah I know what you’re referring to with the 6 games (normally 9 in a normal season) – that’s to prevent burning the first year of the players entry level deal.

That’s the number for players to return to juniors. I don”t think it is the same number. In a normal season RFA’s have to sign by December 1st or they can’t play that year. Since the season started late I have know clue what that date is or if its a team games played thing.

What they want and what they’ll get are two very different things I’d imagine.

The Devils have D to trade from and always covet these two-way guys, it’d be a better fit if he were a winger but I wouldn’t put anything past Lou.

I think he is legitimately worth 3.5, but he will probably get about 4-4.5 mil on his contract. If I was a GM and I needed this guy and had the cap space, I would just buck up and offer sheet him.

Absolutely ridiculous asking for a roster player and top prospect. I’m assuming they want a top six guy to fill his void, but a top prospect on top of that? Little much for a guy who has had one good season. Not saying he doesn’t show potential because he does, but he is not worth what they’re asking at all. This is going to turn into a mini Rick Nash scenario.

O’Reilly’s value isn’t going up with him sitting on his couch – this is bad for him if he expects to get traded, and bad for him in contract negotiations. The Avs would obviously ask for more than they’re going to get for him because they don’t want to get rid of him imo.

Anyone recall how long Doughty’s hold out was for? Seems like it went on longer than this but everyone is already saying the only option is to trade O’Reilly when I don’t think it is.

That’s exactly why no team is dumb enough to send an offer sheet because it would be 4.5/yr at most and the Avs would match it. The funny thing is that this thing has turned into such a mess that if O’Reilly does get traded he’ll end up signing a contract in the realm of what the Avs have already offered. Love the guy, but he’s a 2nd line center at most and isn’t worth Jamie Benn type money regardless of his two way game – what really matters in contract negotiations is the stats under goals and assists and O’Reilly didn’t even crack 20 goals whereas Jamie Benn had 20+ all 3 years of his ELC.

I don’t think there’s any way the Bruins could afford an offer. They have plenty of young talent that will need new deals in the next few years. If they could get him then lookout.

I can’t believe the stubbornness of the Avs front office. This kid is a solid two-way presence and was probably Colorado’s best player last season. He may not be worth $5 mil a year but there’s gotta be some middle ground. I mean they have plenty of cap room. I understand you don’t wanna set a precedent of handing players whatever they demand but Cmon, don’t be so stingy. You really wanna trade away a Ryan Kesler-type who’s just scratching the surface of his potential? What happened to this once proud organization that used to do whatever it took to win

You can see that Colorado are not really intelligent.They dont want to sign him to a 5 mil a year short term contract and they are asking for a roster player and a top prospect.If a team like let’s say the boston bruins offer him 5 mil a year for 2 years they get a 1st and a 3rd round pick which is less than what they are asking and they are forced to either get that or match it

He doesn’t have the body of work to demand that contract. So any team that wants him is going to have to give up major assets and then pay him more than he’s worth. He’s a good player, but I’d be skeptical about giving up a lot for him.
