Penguins put Letang on IR, call up 2011 first-rounder Morrow

Feb 10, 2013, 12:27 PM EDT

Kris Letang AP

Kris Letang has missed Pittsburgh’s last two games and he’s going to miss at least one more tonight.

The Penguins placed Letang on injured reserve retroactively to last Tuesday with a lower body injury. In his place, they’ve called up 2011 first-round pick and Pittsburgh native Joe Morrow.

Letang will miss tonight’s game against New Jersey but is eligible to be back for Wednesday’s game against Ottawa. So far this season, Letang has been lighting it up with three goals and six assists in 10 games played.

The Penguins called up Dylan Reese to replace Letang in the lineup for the last 2 games. I’m wondering if one of the other D-man are banged up/sick and that is why Morrow got called up. Orpik got a minor penalty for saying something to the ref late in the game yesterday and went to the locker room instead of the penalty box. I wonder if it has anything to do with that?

Big blow for the pens, lets hope this isn’t long term.

  3. chrisk61 - Feb 10, 2013 at 12:53 PM

teams that stay relatively healthy in this shortened 48 gm season have a huge advantage.

  4. steelers88 - Feb 10, 2013 at 1:03 PM

I actually wouldn’t mind trading Letang for a young top 6 winger for Crosby or Malkin. Pens have so much good defensemen in the system it’s not even funny.

    • bardown66 - Feb 10, 2013 at 1:20 PM

Letang, Alex pieterangelo, and Erik karlsson are the future of the position. Only an idiot would trade any of these three.

Buy out Martin give letang his contract

      • jpelle82 - Feb 11, 2013 at 9:26 AM

martin is the pens best defenseman this year

    • crosberries - Feb 10, 2013 at 1:21 PM

Yeah let’s go into the playoffs with a d core that has no prior experience cause we def need more goal scorers with they way were putting the pick in the net. Nor do we need his good first pass to get the puck up to the forwards.

    • killerpgh - Feb 10, 2013 at 1:39 PM

Definitely not this year. But depending on want happens to the salary cap he could become a cap causality in the future. Hopefully not, but you never know. After next season his contract is up and he could get a huge raise. Malkin is also up at the same time. Letang has 3.5 million cap hit now and will probably be due a Karlsson type contract (6.5 million cap hit). None of the young guys are ready to player his minutes.

    • cantstopme1006 - Feb 11, 2013 at 11:11 AM

Crosby already has 2 solid wingers in Kunitz and Dupuis who have plenty of ice time with him and have been very productive so far this year. As for Malkin, he has Boychuk and I will admit the jury is still out on him so far but I like what I have seen at this point. Who is on the right side of Malkin?? Hmmm…JAMES FREAKING NEAL!

This team needs defense if they want to win and trading their #2 defenseman and filling his spot with unproven minor league talent is not going to help them.

    He’s actually an Edmonton native…

Wow!!! that’s the most insightful thing I’ve ever heard!!! So much intelligence coming out of Pittsburgh…

    • killerpgh - Feb 10, 2013 at 1:52 PM

How do you know he is a from Pittsburgh or a fan of the Penguins? He could just be a hockey fan reading the article and making a comment. Not everyone has to either be a fan of the team the article is about or troll the thread. Some people just like hockey.

      • phillyphannn83 - Feb 10, 2013 at 2:06 PM

Youre right about that but given that this isnt a Penguins post that should garner much interest outside Pitt or Philly, theres a pretty good chance he is a Pens fan. I do admit its just an assumption. Either way, its still an absolutely useles comment and one we heard 1000 times before the season even started. Its like saying the sky is blue and water is wet…thanks for the information we so desperately needed.

    • sportsfreak13 - Feb 10, 2013 at 2:03 PM

Giroux being held without a point for 7 out of 12 games so far is insightful. The best player in the world sure is having a rough start. Move along troll.

      • misterhyd3 - Feb 10, 2013 at 4:44 PM

Too bad he’s only played 11 games.

      • sportsfreak13 - Feb 10, 2013 at 4:57 PM

The flyers are 5-6-1 and to my knowledge he didn’t miss a game. You do the math.

      • misterhyd3 - Feb 11, 2013 at 5:30 AM

Yeah, you win. I forgot about the tie. I was just busting balls anyway. I don’t hate the Pens like most Flyer fans. I can’t stand Sid’s attitude, but I think the Pens are a great club and fun to watch when they’re not facing my squad. It’s a shame about Letang. Guy is a great, great player who just can’t seem to stay healthy. Not rubbing it in because it means absolutely nothing right now, but beating you guys in the playoffs last year would’ve meant basically nothing to me last year had you guys not been healthy, and I’d like to see both teams maintain good health going forward so we can continue to see good, competitive hockey between our clubs. Pennsylvania is a good state for sport.

      • misterhyd3 - Feb 11, 2013 at 5:31 AM

Please forgive my redundancy, as I said “last year” twice in the same sentence. lol

  7. malkinrulez - Feb 10, 2013 at 1:56 PM

killerpgh you haven’t heard? Flyers fans know everything! And if proved wrong just change the subject to Crosby whining and how dirty Malkin is.

    • phillyphannn83 - Feb 10, 2013 at 2:09 PM

Look up, thats one of your fellow Pens fans changing the subject. You know what they say, if youre guilty of something just blame someone else of doing it to try to get away with it. Nice try bro, sportsfreak13 just ruined that for you.

      • sportsfreak13 - Feb 10, 2013 at 2:14 PM

I’m sorry how was I changing the topic? You said nothing insightful or intelligent comes out of Pittsburgh and I brought to your attention a insightful and intelligent point. Try again troll.

      • phillyphannn83 - Feb 10, 2013 at 2:29 PM

Thank you for proving your intelligence level to everyone. You did EXACTLY what malkinrulez said Philly fans do. Nice try trying to play it off. Nothing in the post or a single comment said anything about Giroux or points per game. THATS changing the subject genius.

      • sportsfreak13 - Feb 10, 2013 at 2:36 PM

Hey Einstein my comment was insightful which you said is something that couldn’t come from Pittsburgh. That was your comment. I didn’t change the subject I expanded on it. Thanks for showing your intelligent level though. You started trolling on this article I just trolled back.

      • phillyphannn83 - Feb 10, 2013 at 2:41 PM

        Nice try.

  8. ironman721 - Feb 10, 2013 at 2:18 PM

That sucks. He needs to get healthy quick. Season is almost half over. He is key for a deep playoff run.

  9. pensfan603 - Feb 10, 2013 at 3:13 PM

I was hoping Morrrow could get another year in AHL oh well, and reese definatly isnt an NHL Caliber defenseman yet.

  10. sjsharks66 - Feb 10, 2013 at 3:15 PM

Philly sucks, oh hey look a comment from someone who does not have pit in their name. Theres some insight for you. :)

  11. csilojohnson - Feb 10, 2013 at 4:14 PM

Your an idiot phillyphann83. A lot of your time wasted defending a hopeless attempt to insult a Pens fan. Guess you can’t talk trash about anything hockey related these days. Must be killing all you lame trolls.
Notice the lack of Pens fans trolling Philly threads. Yet the under 500 Flyers keep producing all these genius fans. Get a life.
No chance they trade Letang. Him and Orpik are the anchors on the Pens blueline. Although Martin seems to be stepping it up this year. I see him going way before Letang.
Like what I see from Boychuk. Seems to be driving the crease on the regular. Something I heard was his downfall in the past.

    • phillyphannn83 - Feb 10, 2013 at 7:00 PM

Just because you say something, doesnt make it true. Try actually looking back at all the Flyers posts and youll see theres not a single one without a Pittsburgh troll, namely sportsfreak13, hockeywithdrawl, and franchisethighs(whom we all know as the same guy with 10+ screenames who only posts things about Crosby’s “junk”. Conversely, just last week there was 2 back-to-back Pens posts with not a single troll comment.

Honestly, you ppl complaining about it need to get a backbone. Its two passionate fanbases that love to hate each other and we have alot of fun in the process. No one is on here wishing ill will on each other or saying offensive things. Its good natured ribbing and if you cant take it then you deserve every bit of criticism for your lack of manhood.

As for sjsharks66, we all know you. You troll Flyers posts worse than the Pens fans. My guess is your a bitter sharks fan upset that your team doesnt get 1/10th the coverage Pens and Flyers do. Im starting to think you may actually live in western PA and dont like the Pens for some odd reason.

  12. puckyouall - Feb 10, 2013 at 5:48 PM

I suggest you Pens and Flyers fans meet in Altoona and drop the gloves there in a Hockey fight for charity. No open handed slapping will be allowed.

    • phillyphannn83 - Feb 10, 2013 at 7:02 PM

Im down!! Lets bang, hockey fights style!!

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 10, 2013 at 7:39 PM

Why waste gas when I can make them look like fools on here with half my brain tied behind my back

      • bobhpine - Feb 10, 2013 at 9:01 PM

Philly fans want to have an internet fight. That’s about as pathetic as it is predictable.

  13. ironcitydonnieiris - Feb 10, 2013 at 7:01 PM

Id like to see Letang back out there ASAP. but I don’t want him still injured coming back and spend more time out of the game. In a short season, every game is important, and we need wet, er, healthy players out there to win games. (Thank goodness I was informed that water was wet…who would have thunk it).

  14. sjsharks66 - Feb 10, 2013 at 7:45 PM

I dont want the sharks to have attention like the flyers do. The only reason the flyers are even relevant now is because of the pens. If they did not have the playoff drama, the flyers would still be irrelevant.
