Thornton has no regrets fighting Scott

Shawn Thornton understood the risks when he dropped the gloves with big John Scott last Thursday in Boston.

Sure, the fight — which left the Bruins’ forward with a concussion — could’ve gone better. But hey, that’s the gig.

So to those observers who suggested Thornton should’ve skated away from Scott’s challenge, that’s not how he operates.

“Obviously with Buffalo, they brought [Scott] in probably because of our team,” said Thornton yesterday, per CSNNE.com. “It’s my job to make sure that I’m available for that, so it’s not one of our star players that has to do it. That’s part of my role. And I accept it fully.

“I wish it went differently. I knew it was going to happen, and it was better to get it out of the way early. Would you rather that, or wait until he does something stupid and I have to deal with it? It was out of the way and it was a non-factor after that, I think.”

As for the notion that Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara (6’9, 255 lbs), was a better match physically for Scott (6’8, 258 lbs)?

“I don’t even know where that [bleep] comes from,” said Thornton (6’2, 217 lbs).

“[Chara]‘s our best player and arguably the best defenseman in the league. There’s no reason for him to have to fight my battles. I’ve done this for a long time, and it’s on me.”

His confidence is shook you can tell !

    • govtminion - Feb 8, 2013 at 6:39 PM

      How?

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 8, 2013 at 8:49 PM

Its just something a person knows senses when they too have also entered the field of honor !

      • govtminion - Feb 8, 2013 at 10:44 PM

I honestly have no idea how to respond to that without laughing directly into your face. Don’t take it the wrong way. Please.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 9, 2013 at 7:01 AM

this coming from someone who has never had a fight in his life I did not think you would understand

  2. soj83 - Feb 8, 2013 at 3:43 PM

Have Chara fight Scott and the Bruins lose their best player for 5 minutes. Thornton did what he is paid to do and Scott landed a great shot that dropped him, end of story.

  3. moast - Feb 8, 2013 at 3:47 PM

eigglesnosuperbowls…..your full of it if thats what you get from this. Thornton knew what he was doing and still had the balls to drop em. Then admits he lost bad and moved on. He stood up for himself and his team and yet ignorant people like you will come on here and bash him because people love to bash the Bruins. Get over it, Buffalo won a fight, how about they try winning a couple of games in a row. Thornton is not less confident, just honest and a real man and tough SOB. Just like the comment above this one…..end of story.

    • buddysguys - Feb 8, 2013 at 4:15 PM

i love that you have to attack Buffalo with the go win a couple games in a row after you get your heads stomped in on home ice by Buffalo both score and physically…remember loud mouth Lucic saying after the Miller incident…”you look at their roster and you say who is going to do something” now Buffalo ads someone to do something and Bruins fans start crying. Your dude got jacked up anyone on the Bruins probably would get jacked up by Scott….end of story.

Bringing in a goon who can’t play hockey the next season is hardly “doing something.” They had chances last year. When it happened, they all stood around. The next meeting, they barely addressed it. They turtled big time. They were pushed around and didn’t push back. And after that hit, they collectively went in the tank and missed the playoffs because they refused to band together as a team. Nobody is complaining in Boston. Buffalo wanted to address the situation after it was no longer important to anyone but Sabres fans. Thornton stood up for his teammates and fought the bigger man so that it could be done with and so that the skill players didn’t need to be involved in nonsense. He got beat down. Nobody disputes that. It’s just sad that Buffalo resorted to bringing in a guy who has a lower ppg average than most AHL guys in order do the job that most of Miller’s teammates didn’t have the sack to do last year. Was more respectable that Gaustad took a beating at least trying to be there for his teammate. The rest of them looked like a bunch of wussys.

Yeah shame on Jason Pominville and Jochen Hecht for not beating up Milan Lucic.

      • scottybcboy - Feb 8, 2013 at 7:28 PM

        @ babych

Thornton gave up 6 inches and 40 pounds to Scott…….not all that different than Hecht or Pommer gives Lucic. I guess the biggest difference is that Thornton is a Bruin….he will fight for his teammates and his crest without worrying about himself. #warrior

To break it down to its simplest form your once tuff guy thorton is no match for the modern day enforcer in the likes of john scott ! Right now he would have a tough time with zak renaldo and zak is just a scrappy little dude !

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 8, 2013 at 9:05 PM

He knows he’s done its time you realize it too ! No bashing here just keeping it real !

      • fahkinsouthiekids - Feb 8, 2013 at 10:16 PM

why are people talking about the sabres? awful defense, one line offense with an overrated headcase for a goalie…they’ll finish 10th per usual and once again be an after thought like every other year sucks for vanek his talent is wasted on a scrub team like the sabres in a going nowhere city like buffalo

      • fahkinsouthiekids - Feb 8, 2013 at 10:19 PM

funniest part of this is even after getting his mugged punched in thornton is still more attractive than 98% of the women in buffalo

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 9, 2013 at 7:04 AM

I never doubted for one second that your attracted to thorton

  4. unklepaulhargus - Feb 8, 2013 at 4:41 PM

Chara would never fight Scott, he is too tall. Chara only goes after guys under 5’11.

    • rdurk86 - Feb 8, 2013 at 5:13 PM

Chara doesn’t fight because, you know, he’s a top 3 D man in the league. Thornton fighting Scott was pointless, let alone Chara. Scott is the single most useless player in the league, a complete pylon, traffic cone, whatever adjective you want.

I don’t see the Bruins even bothering to fight Scott again this season. It’s basically a man advantage for them when he’s on the ice. The only way they fight him is if Scott jumps someone, or runs someone.

      • hockeywithdrawal - Feb 8, 2013 at 5:21 PM

        speaking of Chara and pylons….

      • rdurk86 - Feb 8, 2013 at 6:18 PM

Yeah I’d much rather have Tyler Myers and his 1 goal and -9……

      • bigoldorcafromvan - Feb 8, 2013 at 6:25 PM

@rdurk86 I think you are wrong about the Bruins won.t be bothered to fight Scott again this season. I think if Thorton gets his marbles sorted out and can play hockey again this year he will be stupid enought and try and fight Scott again. But then the is the Thorton way.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 8, 2013 at 9:10 PM

If they are smart no one will challenge him again this year on the field of honor unless they want more Big Bad Bruins on the shelf with little birdies flying around their heads !

  5. drewsylvania - Feb 8, 2013 at 5:25 PM

Some real crybabies on here. You can get Lucic to fight when he shouldn’t, sometimes. Neither he nor Chara should fight anyone unless they choose someone else who is skilled. Scott isn’t skilled.

    End of story.

  6. govtminion - Feb 8, 2013 at 6:40 PM

I know it’s unlikely, because neither is big on spending time in the box for five minutes without good reason, but… I feel like we’ve waited far too long to see a good fight between Myers and Chara. Is that too much to ask?

  7. kgun80 - Feb 8, 2013 at 7:01 PM

I’m a sabers fan and I think Thorton did his job.I can respect that.. and Scott is a goon. There is no reason for Chara to step in and risk a penalty or injury. It would be entertaining but it ain’t gonna happen. But I could see Lucic doing it.. And I think it will before the seasons over.

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 8, 2013 at 9:11 PM

      John Scot will destroy Lucic

  8. buff80 - Feb 8, 2013 at 9:22 PM

    Thornton…youv’e been Thunderstruck…next???

    • hockeyflow33 - Feb 9, 2013 at 2:49 AM

I guess if you can’t win games this must be pretty great for you

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 9, 2013 at 9:41 AM

Buff80,,,,,,, flyers fan here they just cant let this go that their little pit bull who has ran around off his leash for a long time just got smacked in the snoot,, not with the morning paper but the truck that deliveries it !

  9. leninthebuff - Feb 9, 2013 at 9:26 AM

Boy, I have never seen a fight cause so much drama…when Chara pounds Regher it’s ok because Chara is a skilled player, incidently the size difference is roughly the same as Scott/Thornton. Scott did his job as did Thornton and in this instance Thornton took a whooping and he took it with class. As a Buffalo fan I have all the respect for Thornton. The only thing I beg to differ with Thornton is in his saying he fought Scott before Scott did something stupid….first Scott only fights enforcers and doesn’t go out and mug small, skilled player. Scott served his purpose well because the rest of the game was pretty clean, not much pushing and shoving after play was over. Lucic was pretty non-existent physically. Let’s face it once your though guy gets beat down there is nothing to do because Scott still has two fights left and who is going to want to face him. I bet the game on Sunday is calm. Milbury is such a turd, anyone who knows Thornton knows he has heart and somewhere down the line they will meet again. Scott fought smart because as Thornton moved forward be backed off and with his reach he was able to get a good hold and good position and had Thornton off balance.

Scot will destroy anybody the Big Bad Breewins have just face it and let it go ! I wanted John for the Flyers so that when crosby slashes the captains wrist again scott could line up the pens for a seek and destroy mission !
