Crosby: Isles fans ‘didn’t show a lot of class’

Feb 7, 2013, 12:02 PM EDT

Sidney Crosby

Sidney Crosby was glad his nose wasn’t broken, but he was less happy with Islanders fans who cheered when he took a puck in the face Tuesday on Long Island (video).

“The fans didn’t show a lot of class,” he said today prior to tonight’s home game versus Washington. “I wouldn’t do that.”

Crosby’s nose is still swollen and he’s having a bit of trouble breathing, but that’s about it.

“Nothing that’s going to affect anything,” he said, per the Post-Gazette.

At this point, we’d like to open the comments section to all the Flyers fans who would like to share their “get well soon” wishes.

I’ve never heard anything so original .. “Cindy” Cynthia” very clever you people are .. I love how flyers fans think Crosby is a baby but don’t realize that their newly appointed captain , giroux was crying about his wrists and blaming Crosby ..you people think Crosby is a baby or a whiner, your entitled to your opinion , but ill take a Stanley cup , Olympic gold medal winner and every other award he’s won then someone who made the cover of a video game.

    • chrisvegas - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:13 PM

I love how Pen fans try and push the crybaby label to Giroux. Keep trying but everyone in sports knows that Crosby is the biggest crybaby in sports history. It is one thing to state how you got an injury like Giroux did with Crosby slashing his wrist. It wasn’t like he kept telling people and whined about it, no it was answering a question. It is another thing to cry to the refs every play like Crosby does then the same to whine about other team’s fans. There is a reason why the NYI fans cheered his injury, because people around the league don’t like whiners, and that is what Crosby is. Every hockey player in the world would vote Crosby as the biggest crybaby in sports. In fact, it was other very well respected hockey players such as Daniel Alfredsson who gave him that label by calling him out on it. So keep trying to deflect Crosby’s reputation onto G, but we aren’t buying it.

      • killerpgh - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:19 PM

If all these players hate Crosby why if they had to start a franchise with 1 player would it be Crosby?

      • miketoasty - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:32 PM

Wait isn’t Giroux the one who whined to the ref because he didn’t get a call, enough to actually delay getting back into the play, then once he didn’t get his way went head hunting? Oh but Crosby is definitely the biggest whiner out there.

      • miketoasty - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:32 PM

      • jaredphi - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:37 PM

This is the honest truth – Crosby would be low on my list for starting a new team. It’s not that he isn’t extremely skilled (he is).

I’m honestly more worried about his durability. It took him an awfully long time to recover from his concussions as compared to the average time it takes most to return from head shots.

I think Stamkos would be my first pick.

      • thebigeasy2002 - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:37 PM

@killerpgh – Actually I’d take Malkin over Crosby. Crosby won’t last. Either way nobody is arguing that fact that Crosby is one of the best if not the best player in the world. Despiite the player he is, he is the biggest whiner in sports. Why deny it? If I was a Pens fan I would embrace it as a way to piss everyone off. He is a baby. That is all there is to it. He created that reputation for himself. Malkin in my mind is just as good as Crosby, but he isn’t nearly the whiner as Crosby.

      • chrisvegas - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:42 PM

@miketoasty – Seriously? Every player argues a call. That isn’t what makes someone a whiner. Crosby does it EVERY game. He complains about opposing fans, The refs, analyst. Everyone. If you want to go instant by instant I guarantee you Crosby has more 100s of more instances where he cries to the refs then G. Stop trying to put Crosby’s well deserved reputation to G. We aren’t buying it. Crosby is the whiner, just ask his peers.

      • killerpgh - Feb 7, 2013 at 4:34 PM

I’m not saying who I would pick. I just saying who the players voted they would start a franchise with. And that speaks volume. If your fellow players pick you as the best choice to start a franchise with the is a ton of respect, imo. Even last year when he was out injured for most of the season they still picked him and the voting was done while he was injured. 41% picked him last year (5% picked Giroux) and 69% the year before that picked Crosby. Pretty impressive for a player that some are saying other NHLers don’t respect/like. http://www.playerspoll.ca/results/20112012-results/teams-player-opinions/which-current-player-would-you-select-to-start-a-franchise

      • chrisvegas - Feb 7, 2013 at 6:30 PM

@killerpgh – Ya but that is based on his skill. It changes nothing with the fact that he is a whiner. As for Giroux, he had his first breakout season last year so the 5% isn’t much of a surprise. If Crosby is on your team the whining probably won’t bother you. As for everyone else who plays against him, the fans that watch, the media… Well it makes you lose respect for the guy. That is why Pen fans get so upset, because they have maybe the best player in hockey, but people can’t stand him because he is a baby. Out of all the great players I’ve ever watched, the one who doesn’t inspire hockey fans is without a doubt Crosby. He deserves the reputation he has gotten. He needs to learn how to be a man and play the game without crying. He needs to be a man and learn how to take it with class from opposing fans. He needs to be a man and not care when someone like Mike Milbury cause him a baby. Let’s face it, Crosby is a no class whining little baby. I don’t expect that to ever change. If he conducted himself with class everyone in hockey would have treated him with class.

      • paresident21 - Feb 8, 2013 at 5:31 AM

Talk about a players poll, here’s one for you. Crosby voted biggest whiner by his FELLOW NHL PLAYERS

    • ibieiniid - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:16 PM

Crosby: “The fans didn’t show a lot of class, I wouldn’t do that.”
Giroux: “Instead of going for the puck when it was dropped, he’d hack me across the wrists.”

there’s a difference between telling people what somebody did, and comparing yourself to who did it.

not only is Sid a crybaby bit**, but he’s judgmental as well.

    • thebigeasy2002 - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:18 PM

I’m pretty sure we could find a whole bunch more of Crosby Quotes of him whining then we could Giroux. I mean cmon.. Crosby cries every game. Who you kidding?

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 7, 2013 at 5:58 PM

I say the flyers should target his beak next game !

    • jbell33139 - Feb 8, 2013 at 1:15 AM

Yeah, but, Giroux lays Crosby out 6 ways to Sunday every chance he gets. I’ll tae that over your f@ggoty a$$ medals and bs accolades.

    • kingjoe1 - Feb 8, 2013 at 1:07 PM

Who cares what he accomplished, it has nothing to with whether he is a great example of all the future boy scout leaders or not. I mean John Travolta won lots of awards, but well he still likes his drinks stiff.

How does Captain Claudia feel about this?

    • paresident21 - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:38 PM

You penguins fans are very unoriginal, every market outside of Pittsburgh refers to Crosby as a baby and a punk, penguins fans are the only ones who have something against giroux. There’s gotta be something about every other fan base not liking Crosby I think they may be on to something….

  4. f2maestro - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:22 PM

I lose a little respect for the people who manage / update this blog every time an ‘article’, much like this one, is published with the single point of causing a negative reaction from it’s readers. This article serves no purpose other than to provoke 100+ emotion filled comments. Every person with half an ounce of common sense knows what the select few Islander fans did was classless, but such is the world today. The closing line says it all:

“At this point, we’d like to open the comments section to all the Flyers fans who would like to share their “get well soon” wishes.”

If only this blog was about providing substance and not provoking arguments.

I saw your typing. But all it said to me was, LAST PLACE LAST PLACE LAST PLACE LAST PLACE LAST PLACE LAST PLACE LAST PLACE LAST PLACE LAST PLACE LAST PLACE.

Rationalize it all you want…the season will be a quarter over after this weekend…and…uh

    Last Place.

    • paresident21 - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:36 PM

Last place a quarter of the season in, I didn’t know they handed the Stanley cup now? That’s like bragging about starting first in a race, there’s plenty of hockey left there champ come talk when the season is over

      • ibieiniid - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:42 PM

last time we were in last place a quarter into the season, did we not go to the stanley cup finals?

      • pens5829 - Feb 7, 2013 at 4:12 PM

Did you win the Stanley Cup that year? If not, your comment is irrelevant.

  6. nflfan22 - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:27 PM

way to pull a total Florio on this story. they took these quotes completely out of context in order make this into a different story than it really is and the idiots eat it up. how about printing the full interview? it’s pht that is classless on this one. Busch -league journalism at its lowest.

  7. jmikeymania - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:47 PM

Crosby was just answering a question. Any team that cheers an injured player is classless too. Crosby does complain too much but I’m getting tired of EVERYONE COMPLAINING ABOUT CROSBY COMPLAINING! The league & refs don’t do anything about it so of course it will continue. It just happens to be Sid who gets this treatment, it could have been any other star. Sid needs to focus on hockey more than complaining but it’s the league/refs who encourage (?) it.

    • chrisvegas - Feb 7, 2013 at 6:34 PM

If Crosby stops crying then people would stop complaining about him. If he changed and learned to keep him mouth shut and play with class, hockey fans everywhere would show more class when watching him. I’ve never seen a hockey superstar so unlikeable as Crosby.

  8. andyisfat - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:52 PM

Does she ever stop whining? Sissy Cindy needs to go on the Oprah show to tell her story.

  9. dawglb - Feb 7, 2013 at 3:58 PM

I think Pittsburgh is the only city that gets to see the mature Sydney. The rest of the world only sees this kind of nonsense. The whiny, baby crap. Which is the real Crosby???? I am leaning towards this: he is a whiny, little, baby who is a complete vagina. I hope every city that he plays in rocks their house and gets all over him during the game.

    • pens5829 - Feb 7, 2013 at 4:14 PM

You Flyer fans cry and whine more the the Harbaugh Bros.

    • chrisvegas - Feb 7, 2013 at 6:35 PM

Actually it is you Pens fans who have been crying ever since the Flyers knocked the Pens out of the playoffs. Show some class for once.

  11. matthews4 - Feb 7, 2013 at 4:53 PM

Here is the problem with the whole problem with the Giroux is a crybaby argument. It doesn’t make Mario’s pool boy any less of one. I’m not a fan of either team, however Pens fans trying to shine the spotlight on someone else so nobody looks at Sid any longer is laughable. When you can’t win the argument change it..really? He has been a whiner his whole career. He himself even admitted he whined early in his career. He then went on to say he didn’t do that anymore, 3 weeks later the Philly series. This is like saying Torres isn’t dirty, how many examples do we need until it is what it is.

  12. dwdive - Feb 7, 2013 at 4:57 PM

WOW, I thought Pitt was supposed to be a tough city? It’s just full of crybaby B*TCHES just like Crosby. Pitt fans can’t say anything about class, they have become the biggest whiners and most classless fu cks in the country. WOW, just WOW, keep it classy Pitt, you crybaby b*tches

  13. dkphilly1122 - Feb 7, 2013 at 5:36 PM

As a Flyer’s fan I HATE Crosby, and his whining about other fans who can’t stand him in EVERY City but Pittsburgh cheering when he gets hurt. I hate to see ANY player get a concussion because regardless of how I feel Sid is one of the best players in the world. The puck to the face isn’t a concussion though and therefore it was hysterical, especially him crying about the Isle fans cheering when it happened. Every city cheers and what not when an opposing player gets hurt and all UNLESS it is obviously a concussion or boarding calls where they are severely hurt. Just move on Sid, no one cares except you and the Pen fans, which is no one important.

  14. spavs412 - Feb 7, 2013 at 5:37 PM

@renberg19- Hank is good but he’s not Sid. Sid has accomplished more than Hank before he could drink booze in the US. He’s on the PK now too, so that debunks ur 2 way game theory. Remember when Sid was the youngest guy to ever win a scoring title at the worlds tourney? Hanks good but Sids hardware from before he was 24 puts any player on this earth to shame. Oh FYI I cheered my ass off when kasper started the end of lindros’ career. It wasn’t Scott stevens it was a penguin who started the end for him!

  15. spavs412 - Feb 7, 2013 at 5:37 PM

Stop lying Dbag. We all know you were still on mama’s titty when Kasper elbowed Big E. You saw that on youTube when you became a Hens fan a couple of years ago.

  16. ironman721 - Feb 7, 2013 at 6:20 PM

Rooting for injuries or cheering when a person with a history of serious head injuries get another injury to part of his head is just plain wrong no matter who it is. If you hate someone because of the jersey he wears or his style of play, that is fine. It’s a free country and that’s your right but if you get excited seeing people get a potential career ending injury then that speaks a lot to your character and how you were raised. Do you cheer when a football player gets a spinal injury and is carted off the field in a neck brace? If you can do these things and wake up every morning and look yourself in the mirror then good for you. I know I couldn’t do that. I was raised better than that. I’m very lucky for that. But like I said its a free country and you are free to chose to be better then that too.

    • chrisvegas - Feb 7, 2013 at 6:43 PM

As a Flyers fan I would never wish/cheer a head injury on anyone, even Crosby. We know what it is like to lose players to head injuries from Eric Lindros, Premo, and to Pronger. Personally I hope Crosby has a long career because it is fun to hate him and he makes the rivalry so much better. Though I will say that Crosby created the hate that follows him in every city. To me when fans cheer his injury it is because he had created a hatred for himself by being a classless hockey player. You get what you deserve.

      • killerpgh - Feb 7, 2013 at 7:12 PM

Do you agree that Pronger deserved to have his heart stop after taking a puck to the chest and his career ruined by concussions since he was one of if not the direst player in the NHL for years?

      • ironman721 - Feb 7, 2013 at 7:23 PM

I remember when they use to call Lindros a baby I think it was a sports illustrated article. I also remember when people criticized him because he didn’t play with serious head injuries. It was wrong of people then just like it is wrong now. For people to criticize him for diving is a joke. Star players from all the way back to Gretzky were targets for the other teams goons. So they were taught at an early age to get the team on the power play. That’s the truth and that’s hockey and its not going anywhere. Crosby has been in the NHL since he was a teenager and had handled it better then most people could. You can say what you want but he has never done anything that warrants the same disgusting treatment Lindros got. He’s not getting arrested, climbing up in the stands to fight fans, or beating up women like many pro athletes in other sports. He’s young, talented, and had won a lot and people don’t like him. That is fine. But cheering when he is down on the ice and criticizing him for not liking it is just wrong to me.

  17. theagitator1691 - Feb 7, 2013 at 8:36 PM

For Crosby or any penguin to question anyone else’s class in the league is a complete joke. The Pittsburgh Penguins are the most classless scum bags of the NHL aside from Crosby complaining, Guys like Orpik, Cooke, Asham, Adams, Neal and Kunitz Beginning with Knee on Knee hits from Orpik. Matt Cooke delivering countless dirty hits, to the crosscheck sucker punch Asham (I know he is not there anymore) cant forget the hair pulling Craig Adams, James Neal leaping/charging to hit someone in the head, and kunitz delivering cheap shot elbows to the back of players heads. So for any one on Pittsburgh to call anyone classy needs a reality check.

    • hockeyfan9170 - Feb 7, 2013 at 11:19 PM

  19. hockeyfan9170 - Feb 7, 2013 at 11:17 PM

Did a Flyers fan actually say Crosby took longer than the average player to recover from a concussion? I haven’t seen Chris Pronger back. Have you?

  20. schuckme - Feb 8, 2013 at 2:11 AM

OMG! like he should be so surprised.. God forbid not everybody is going to worship him in visiting arenas and he wonders why everyone everywhere even in Pittsburgh thinks he’s such a little girl.. Maybe if he would just shut the eff up, suck it up, and play like a professional people would start to respect him..

  23. junterberger22 - Feb 8, 2013 at 9:59 AM

First off Crosby was spot on saying NY was classless. I dislike a lot of players in the NHL but would never cheer an injury. Second; all you guys/girls whining about Crosby…. Your jealous your teams never had that kind of talent. Haha oh if your from Philly your words don’t mean a thing you spell Philly c.l.a.s.s.l.e.s.s

    • jimeejohnson - Feb 9, 2013 at 12:44 PM

What is even more sick is that Pens and Flyers fans are from the same, great state. Haters gonna be losers.

  24. junterberger22 - Feb 8, 2013 at 10:31 AM

I don’t have to make excuses for the pens their actions carry more meaning than other teams fan’s excuses. The bottom line is Crosby will continue to be great and I will enjoy everyone’s frustrations and flawed accusations towards him in his rise to a second cup.
