Can we please just get a d-man that can keep the easy pucks in the offensive zone? I love Timmo and he’s a great d-man but I’ve never seen a guy let so many easy pucks bounce over his stick when he’s stationary at the blue line and the puck comes straight to him(maybe I have, we had to suffer through Matt Carle). Its so aggravating. I have no problem when its difficult pucks to stop or get to but the easy ones drive me nuts!!

timonen is making over 6 million now…he would be hard pressed to get that from another team but if he can get it out of philly i dont blame him. holmgren is in a tough spot but might have to do it…i just dont see it making sense financially all the baggage holmgren already is carrying

i thought you were banking on him retiring the other day when the iginla rumor came out? he’s gonna want no less than 3.5 or 4 per year and thats a pretty significant paycut for him, especially as the flyers best d man, he would be making less than a few less than worthy flyers. even if its a 2 year deal, its hard to spread that cap hit to be able to go big in free agency which we all know holmgren will try to do. briere, pronger contracts still there, kimmo retiring was gonna give some relief financially. it surprises me that they would be talking about it at this point of the season either way…wasnt he just talking about retiring before this season started?

Yeah kimmo is prob the most well rounded defender in the league with lidstrom gone… If kimmo was like 6 inches taller lidstrom and him would be nearly identical. However kimmo is getting slower and for 6 mill even though he is my favourite defender of all time I would have to pass. If he takes a pay cut, till about 3 mill it would help the team a lot and help his chances at a cup which is all he really needs now…. He has enough money for 2 life times to never work again, just one cup will immortalize his legacy.

Many may forget that he did not enter the league in his early 20s like most players because teams did not think he was big enough to be an NHL Defender. If he did he would have another few hundred point to his career total which would help for the HOF nod. A cup would help replace those years.

Gotta wonder if Holmgren’s cloak and dagger BS with his players is catching up to him.. doesn’t look like Timonen was going to take any sort of discount to stay, in fact it kind of looks like he (or his agent or whoever) stuck it to the Flyers because they are desperate.

He is an excellent D Man however 6 mill for 1 year is outrageous. He will only get slower with time. His skill set and style is not like Lidstrom so his age will play a part. 1 year 3 million should be it some of you guys hit the nail on the head.

This is not a smart move unless he is taking 2-3 mil at most. And then the Flyers will still have to trade someone like Briere to get under the cap.

One year at $4-4.5m would be excellent, or two years at, say, $6.5-7m. But one year, six million? Nnnnnope.

Kimmo can still play a bit but 6 mill for a 38 year old someone has to tell Holmgren this isn’t Monopoly money he’s
playing with…maybe 2 years for 6 mill total I could live with

Wow I love Kimmo but how can they afford that? Especially with the cap dropping to 64 million. He’s extremely intelligent, is always in position, but lets face it, he’s lost two or three steps. I guess they looked at the free agent market, saw that Edler and Enstrom have been locked up, and decided they weren’t gonna find anyone better. I’m glad we’re keeping him. He’s definitely a calming influence, but I don’t think he’s worth more than 4.5 mil. We need speed on the backend and this eats up all the free cap space I’d thought we’d have with his expiring contract. No hometown discount Kimmo? Oh well. Holmgren always finds a way to fit contracts under the cap.

Yea I don’t see 4 or 5 million. But 3 is possible there are to many players that need contracts and too many quality free agents. Either way would love to see him back on a 1 or 2 year deal

This could be very interesting. Homer is a very aggressive GM. Can’t see it being more than a 2 year deal, but you never know with Holmgren. 1 year in the 4-5 million range would be good. But even that I would wait until late in the season to see how he holds up before offering that.
