Ovechkin: “I have only three points. It kind of embarrasses me.”

Feb 3, 2013, 11:36 AM EST

Alex Ovechkin AP

Before the Capitals take on the Penguins (12:30 p.m. ET on NBC) Alex Ovechkin met with the media to discuss where the team is at, where he’s at, and having to face off with one of their biggest rivals for the first time.

The Caps captain fessed up that his slow start (two goals and one assist) has him feeling a bit down in the dumps.

“I’m standing here, I have only three points. It kind of embarrasses me, but it is what it is.”

What it is for the Caps is a lousy start to the season. They’re 2-5-1 with just five points in the standings. It’s still early, but if Ovechkin and the Capitals are going to go anywhere this season he’s got to get going.

When Ovy is wound up and let to do his thing he is the best player to watch in the NHL ! I understand putting the governor on him to play a team concept is necessary for optimum team success but when he is left to free lance he is the most entertaining player in the league ! As an expert in hockey I have obtained a doctorate over the years in the sport watching my Philadelphia Flyers ! Our Captain Claude quite simply now in these parts is know as THE CAPTAIN has wet Ovy’s pallet with that playoff hit last year and I fully expect to see best player in the NHL to have mastered embellishment to be punished by Ovy every chance he gets if the refs call it square !

      0/10

    • 2jivecrew - Feb 3, 2013 at 3:32 PM

No, he’s not. He’s a one trick pony. And his trick has been figured out.

    • mp1131211 - Feb 4, 2013 at 4:24 AM

The captain only has 6 points himself and a failing team as well. So much in common with Ovi.

  3. sjsblitz - Feb 3, 2013 at 11:51 AM

Gotta get in those dirty areas Ovi, cant always snipe for highlight reels! Still have faith in you

  4. letsgopens8771 - Feb 3, 2013 at 11:53 AM

Boo hoo, is it because you miss your boyfriend Semin??

  5. Stiller43 - Feb 3, 2013 at 12:05 PM

Well theyre still ahead of the flyers

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 3, 2013 at 12:13 PM

When the Flyers start flopping like the Pitsbug Flopper hence getting more power play time this thing might tighten up !

      • claysbar - Feb 3, 2013 at 12:24 PM

Or if the Flyers quit taking major penalties, tied for 3rd most in the league, maybe they will play some more 5 on 5 or have opportunities to have other teams do something stupid and take penalties for. Maybe play a more disciplined game than blame the refs for the team leading the league in penalty minutes as well as being tied for second in bench minors.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 3, 2013 at 12:28 PM

I agree,, that coupled with doing the Pitsbug Flopper should tighten things up in a hurry !

      • crosberries - Feb 3, 2013 at 2:33 PM

        What’s a pitsbug?

  6. clawedjeroo28 - Feb 3, 2013 at 12:12 PM

Stiller- caps have 5 points flyers have 6

  7. stakex - Feb 3, 2013 at 12:12 PM

I’ll tell you one thing thats not helping Ovechkin get going…. playing with 3rd/4th line players. I mean when was the last time anyone saw Ovechkin get a good outlet pass, or a solid setup while playing at even strength? Almost all of his even strength chances hes had to create by himself… and its going to be hard to score a lot of goals like that. Not to mention playing with bottom six line mates is going to kill his assist total.

    • bgsusteelers - Feb 3, 2013 at 12:22 PM

Great players make 3rd liners into top 6 forwards. Lemieux did it for a long time. Love him or hate him, Crosby does it with Dupuis and Kunitz. There isn’t one team out there who has an All-Star top 6.

      • claysbar - Feb 3, 2013 at 12:26 PM

Other than his mom and dad, if not for Mario, who would know Bob Errey’s name?

      • 19to77 - Feb 3, 2013 at 1:57 PM

And THIS is why Ovi is not a truly great player, and Crosby and Malkin are. Neal was a career 25-goal man before Malkin. Dupuis was signed for $1.5m for a reason – before finding his way onto a line with Crosby, that’s about what his production was worth. Meanwhile, Ovechkin gets noticeably worse when he isn’t paired with an All-Star playmaker, as we saw from the production differences last year when Backstrom was in and out of the lineup.

What happened to Ovenchicken? He used to be the best player in the NHL. Now I doubt he’s even in the top 40.

    • 2jivecrew - Feb 3, 2013 at 3:33 PM

No, he was never close to being the best player. He was the product of a system……and the media. This is who AO really is. Many of us said it from the beginning, and time and proven us right.

    Alllleeexxxaaannndddeere brrroooovechkin!

  10. hockeywithdrawal - Feb 3, 2013 at 12:50 PM

Just watching him in the first period of the Pens game, he’s not even playing the puck…just going for big hits. And not that there’s anything at all wrong with that, he’s a physical player and they are all clean hits (not leaving his feet which is good, he fixed that). But unless they use him as a sniper on a scoring line, instead of a plugger on a grinding line, he’s not going to get any points.

Whatever doubt was about your mental state was cleared up by this post..a fan boy bar none. The ravenator of hockey threads
Ovi is not about anything but ovi…reminds me of you

“It kind of embarasses me, but it is what it is.”

Really inspirational, captain. You’re clearly emotionally invested in your team’s and your own performance.

Can someone please just put the C on Laich and separate Ovechkin and all the ego and drama he brings with him from the team leadership already?

  13. ironmike778 - Feb 3, 2013 at 6:33 PM

Dale Hunter knew exactly what to do – LESS ice time for Ovie.

  14. steelersc - Feb 3, 2013 at 11:50 PM

maybe he should consider a trade

  15. ryanoffski - Feb 4, 2013 at 12:58 PM

I love Watching Ovechkin, but lately he hadn’t done much. Some people in Washington don’t want him and other teams would love to add him for that extra star power. It might be good for him to consider a trade. He doesn’t even seem happy anymore.
