The injury situation on the Detroit Red Wings blue line appeared to get worse Saturday.

Wings defenseman Brendan Smith left Saturday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets after taking a hit from forward Derek MacKenzie in the first period.

Ansar Khan, the Red Wings beat reporter for, tweeted that head coach Mike Babcock confirmed Smith suffered a shoulder injury, and although there isn’t a specific timeline for his return, it could be at least a week.

The Red Wings entered their Central Division clash with Columbus already missing blue liners Carlo Colaiacovo and Ian White.

Colaiacovo injured his left shoulder during a game in Columbus on Jan. 21 – the second game of the season for the Wings.

The Detroit News reported that Colaiacovo skated earlier this week for the first time since the injury, but isn’t ready to return.

White plans to play Tuesday against the Calgary Flames, according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, after missing the last five games with a left-leg laceration.

Ten of the front page articles are about injured players and/or related suspensions in some way. I’m not sure when that became so normal, but it’s been a pretty dismal couple of years in those respects. Maybe I’m idealizing – hell, I probably am – but it just seems like the body count wasn’t so high in 2006-08.

It’s sensationalism. (Is that even a word?)
I’ve been curious about the Flames–particularly Hudler-and they don’t even exist on this site.

Huh. Didn’t know there was such an anti-Flames movement going on. Speak your piece or forever give your thumbs down, coward.

Part of that is that the Flames have played like three fewer games than everyone else somehow. They’ve only been in five.

You have to go to TSN or CBC, then you get coverage of Canadian teams until you puke…

@thehighcountrybear: Stop hating on the Canadian teams.(Unless it’s Vancouver.) What is wrong with you? Hockey Night in Canada is a cultural staple. I grew up watching Don Cherry on Chanel 9
“You get coverage of Canadian teams until you puke”….

      For who?!? And for what?

  4. thehighcountrybear - Feb 3, 2013 at 12:55 AM

There’s no anti-Flames sentiment, they’d have to be relevant to warrant that amount of attention…?

Yeesh, I do believe you’re right.
