I didnt notice the elbow until I saw the replay… chances are the refs didnt see it as well since there is only two refs on the ice, the other 2 are linesmen. Yeah if the refs would have gotten the call on the ice right philly somewhere between a double or a major to work with.

could have easily changed the out come of the game, but refs are only human

to be fair, people call crosby a baby because when he first came into the league he would dive and whine all the time, plus if you touched him you got 2 minutes… here watch this video

sid may be a great player but he has way too many flaws.

as for calling simmonds “Classless”, “trashy” and a “Disgrace to the game”… really shows just how little you know. He is a grinder… his job is to get in front of the net and battle, he is a good player, classy, clean and anything but a disgrace… not sure you have the right player here.

He is one of the best playing the game today and chooses to be a dirty, diving, crying, cheap shot artist. Your assessment of Simmer also shows your complete lack of knowledge regarding this game and the players.

Let me get this straight: a player elbows another player in the head. There isn’t even a minor penalty called on the play, but the player is suspended three games? So, there were four officials on the ice and not one of them put their arm up, but the player is suspended three games? And people still wonder why the NHL is fourth in team sports in the US…?

I hate to see players sidelined by injury. I hope Simmons recovers quickly and recovers fully before coming back. When any player is sidelined, it takes part of the game away. I’d rather watch a great game and lose, than watch a blowout because a team is shorthanded by a player.
As a pens fan reading up on PHT with great rivalry comments between the Flyers and Pens opener, I wonder if Karma reared its head due to the myriad of Philly comments about knocking Crosby out for the season.
Both sides love their teams. Both sides are extremely passionate. Both sides have their “moronic and classless” fans. Let’s both stay passionate and stay clear of wishing ill on each team.
This Pens fan hope Simmons is back sooner rather than later. And I can’t wait for our next showdown.

I hope now that Flyers fans have seen this happen to one of their own, that they will stop calling Crosby a baby because he took an extended leave of absence for his painful concussion and I hope that the Flyers take less cheapshots as well.

That said, even though I am a Pens fan and I think that Simmonds is a classless player, a disgrace to the game, and a trashy player, I still feel sorry for him. He is that guy who you hate to play against when you play Philly, but his injury takes a big physical presence out of their lineup. I never wish for a player to get injured like this and I felt real sorry for him during the whole banana peel incident. Erskine deserved what he got from Sheriff Shanny, and I really wish that players stopped taking cheapshots.

Without a doubt Chara is a dirty player UK, then again look at the team he is on… he has Lucic and Marchand on the same team as him… Chara is very dirty but he is not even the dirtiest player on Boston.

that chara hit had nothing but intent… the puck was way gone and chara just saw an opening… not to mention chara actually attacked Pactioretty before as well. Max scored a game winner in OT (I think it was the last time they met before that) and Chara well after the game was over jumped him…. If it was me Chara would have gotten close to 30 games.

@Steeltownpride… crosby skated right into the guy… in fact, crosby was the one who changed his course, if anything would have happened on that call it would have been crosby for interference., I KNOW THAT SOUNDS DUMB, but Sid really did change direction to go right into his path and no puck was near which is the definition of interference

to be fair, Max is one of the habs top players, would you really sacrifice your team to hurt one other team in the league?
the idea overall is flawed, look at Pronger, he was taken out due to a cheap hit and is pretty much retired and the hit was not even that bad.

My point in my first post was match suspension for blatantly dirty hits results in injury. Not a borderline hit. But the hit on Simmons and the attempted decapitation by Chara are to intent to injure hits.

Time to ratchet it up NHL

3 games for giving a player a concussion because you lack the talent to accept a pass and then confound that failure by going after it rather than getting back on D? 3 games when a player decides rather than holding or tripping the player he will just throw his elbow into his face rather than him getting by him?

3 games isn’t even close to enough with what we know about concussions. We tend to accept concussions on clean plays but the NHL needs to step on the throats of these types of decisions by scrubby players who are barely NHL level.

Okay moron, thanks for your tip. Erskin is a good player and made a mistake. I’m glad the mistake favors the Caps on multiple levels. 3 games shouldn’t do too much damage to an already terrible start to the season. As for Philthy, I like Simmons and hate to see him hurt but everybody that’s played knows these injuries are par for the course. I hope this helps put more distance between the two teams in the standings. Only time will tell. But I hope the Caps can take advantage of their good fortune and put a winning streak together.

Sucks way worse for the Flyers. Erskine isn’t anywhere close to as integral a piece as Simmonds. Not only did the officials turn a blind eye to a blatantly dirty elbow, but now we’re without a forward who was playing very well on the first line and PP. We didn’t even get a 2 minute PP on a play that should’ve been a 5-min major and probably a match penalty. Hell Backes got a match penalty for a clean hit. This whole situation is extremely upsetting as the Flyers continue to be plagued by bad luck. Meanwhile Erskine basically gets off scott free. I hardly think the Caps are losing sleep over missing Erskin for a few games, while the Flyers must now scramble again to fill another hole created by injury.

Three games is nothing compared to how many Simmer will miss. Caps should consider themselves lucky. Hopefully Wayne will be back the next time the two teams meet, then real justice can be done. Watch your back Erskin.

Thats a unrealistic idea. Sometimes a borderline, or mostly clean hit can result in serious injury… just like a perfectly clean hit. How does it make sense to turn something that would otherwise be just a fine, or a one game suspension into a long term ban? Theres just too much of a grey area.

This hit is actually a pretty good example. Its a nasty, dirty hit that is worthy of a suspension…. but is Erskine thinking “I’m going to hit him right in the face with my elbow” as hes throwing the hit? Probably not… hes probably thinking “Oh crap, I’m beat… better get a piece of him!” and hit him right in the face. Again, a player is responsible for their actions but an indefinate suspension for a one time mistake, or a grey area play? Thats just a terrible idea.

The major problem with that is that teams would keep the injured player out longer if the guy suspended was a major piece of a rival. Since you brought up Chara, had he been suspended until Max pac came back, the canadiens would have kept max out as long as possible, because Chara is much more important to their rival Bruins than he is to the Habs. Teams will always game the system to gain an advantage.

If a player is injured due to a dirty hit, that player should be suspended til the injured player returns. Then those kind of hits would stop. Hear that Chara….
