I’m going to ignore the “obviously not learning from the Pens” line because, well, it’s stupid, no one likes you guys to begin with but it seems like you want to have an actual hockey conversation. Ground rules: If you bring up the Stanley Cup win, or even decide to mention the name Crosby, I will attack. We good? I am from Boston and I am not as nice as most Wings fans. I can and will send you home crying.
That being clarified, Howard does best when he’s played a lot. The guy’s a workhorse. Our issue is the fact we have no backup. Gus is injured. Our back-up to the back-up goalie (Joey MacDonald) is also injured. We have Thomas McCollum backing up Howard. The back-up to the back-up. That’s why Howie’s getting all the starts. When Gustavesson gets healthy I think he’ll push Howard, but that’s not the reason the Wings D is struggling. Our D is struggling because they’re our D. Detroit’s organization doesn’t invest in goalies because they expect the defense to be the strong point. Anyone feel free to throw in a Mzark reference here, but if that kid’s the next best thing why isn’t he on the pro team yet?

They don’t have a solid backup for him. They obviously are not learning from the Pens. Flower got overworked last season as well because Brent Johnson sucked at the end of the season and Fleury got shelled as a result. Now, with Vokoun backing him up, there is a perfect balance in the cage and The Pens are doing just fine.

The Wings don’t have that balance. Maybe when the Monster gets back, they will be more balanced, but this is part of the reason why the Wings are struggling with defense at times. Howard is getting overworked.

Hope Joey McDonald can get healthy and return to the Wings bench – those two make a very good goalie lineup.
