The Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers finished the first period of Friday’s game without a goal, but the first 20 minutes were anything but uneventful.

Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds went down at 18:14 of the first period after being elbowed in the face by Capitals defenseman John Erskine.

There was blood on the ice when Simmonds was finally able to skate to the bench and he wasn’t with the Flyers for the start of the second period, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Sam Carchidi. However, Erskine was not penalized for his actions.

Well after the initial hit, but before the puck was dropped, Philadelphia’s Zac Rinaldo and Washington’s Matt Hendricks got into a fight. Both were ejected from the game as a result.

That sparked Scott Hartnell to praise Rinaldo via Twitter in the middle of a game.

If you want to see the entire incident, you can do so below:

If that’s not at least 3 games I will be shocked.

    • drewsylvania - Feb 1, 2013 at 8:40 PM

If he’s not hospitalized after retaliation, I’ll be shocked.

  2. sabatimus - Feb 1, 2013 at 8:37 PM

    Bye bye Foreskin.

  3. illadelphiasphinest - Feb 1, 2013 at 8:48 PM

Unreal that no penalty was called. Especially when blood was drawn. One of the worst calls ive seen so far this season. That elbow was with intent. It should be no less then 3 games. Hitting someone with an elbow in an upward motion while skating at speed towards eachother into the nose is very dangerous and could possibly cause an injury or a possible fatality.

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 1, 2013 at 9:21 PM

Referring in hockey blows ! The two fighters get a game misconduct because they fought when the puck wasn’t dropped,,,,,,,, but the ref faked the face off ! Horrible,, the NHL is a joke !

  4. phillyphanatic77 - Feb 1, 2013 at 9:02 PM

These refs have been HORRIBLE. They’re calling ticky tac plays but a blatant elbow directly to Simmonds nose in front of two refs goes uncalled. Unbelievable. Not only was it obvious, but it could have been a scoring opportunity. Simmonds laying on the ice bleeding, the refs discuss it, and decide it was somehow clean. If Erskine isnt suspended for 3 games I’d be surprised. But to let that go is just plain absurd. Atleast Rinaldo absolutely destroyed Hendricks. But that doesn’t make up for it.

    • sabatimus - Feb 1, 2013 at 9:19 PM

The ref in the corner was looking right at it too, and didn’t call it. I hope Simmonds tears Foreskin a new one.

  5. paresident21 - Feb 1, 2013 at 9:13 PM

How do you call timmonen for basically shoving a guys face then turn around and miss this? I could see if it was behind the play but the puck was still there, they said on the radio there are four refs, how,in the world did none of them see that? That non call is a disgrace and the refs should face discipline too for such bad officiating.

  6. skinsovieterps - Feb 1, 2013 at 9:19 PM

Hey Flyer fans, shut up, it was an accident. A filthy trifling city saying something was dirty, please.

    • sportsfreak13 - Feb 1, 2013 at 9:32 PM

Your a idiot. Signed a pens fan.

      • hockeyissweet - Feb 2, 2013 at 9:34 AM

saying “signed a pens fan” totally cancels out you calling someone an idiot. thats like bobby brown calling whitney a crackhead.

      • bmoreredfury311 - Feb 2, 2013 at 11:27 AM

whats a pen fan doing on this page, agreeing with the flyers? You guys will be crying when you play the flyers and when they have a dirty play on your be loved cindy.

      • ironman721 - Feb 2, 2013 at 2:58 PM

It’s true Pens fans don’t always agree with Flyer fans but there are 2 things we can agree on:
        1. That was dirty and deserves a suspension.
        2. The officiating had been awful this year.

      • hockeywithdrawal - Feb 2, 2013 at 3:21 PM

bmoreredfury – lowest class comment I’ve ever seen on here bro – and I’ve seen some idiots. Congrats…

      • misterchainbluelightning - Feb 2, 2013 at 3:41 PM

        You’re an idiot

Learn the difference between You’re and Your and try to understand that you use “AN” instead of “a” when the follow word begins with a vowel.

Or remain looking like you’re a 5 grade dropout

      • sportsfreak13 - Feb 2, 2013 at 3:57 PM

Haha misterchainbluelightning my shoes cost more then YOUR house. Beat it.

      • sportsfreak13 - Feb 2, 2013 at 4:59 PM

“A 5 grade dropout”. If you want to get technical it’s 5th, not 5. Where did you get YOUR grammar police badge?

    • phillyphanatic77 - Feb 1, 2013 at 9:34 PM

Dude no effin way. That was a blatant, intentional elbow. If you can’t see that you’re completely blind. No homer mentality needed when something is that obvious. You are wrong in every aspect of your statement.

    • paresident21 - Feb 1, 2013 at 9:37 PM

An accident? You must not have seen the blatant elbow go up as he was skating by, please entertain us and explain how that was an accident? I’ll wait go ahead….

      • bmoreredfury311 - Feb 1, 2013 at 11:01 PM

Because there was no intent. It would have been a call, if he was clearly head hunting. You guys are very quick to b*tch about this, when your team does the same thing doing. He’ll get a game at most.

    • paresident21 - Feb 1, 2013 at 9:40 PM

Actually never mind, no,need to make your fellow caps fans look bad. I’ll just wait for the suspension announcement tomorrowmformthe “accidental” elbow since people get suspended for accidents.

    • sabatimus - Feb 1, 2013 at 10:41 PM

Hey smart guy. Bruins fan here. Hate the Flyers. That was a cheap hit that deserves a suspension. Period.

  7. sjsblitz - Feb 1, 2013 at 9:50 PM

They really need to re-evaluate every single ref in this league. I absolutely LOVE Rinaldo for dropping bombs on Hendricks, nothing but passion in his face for a Simmonds

    • phillyphanatic77 - Feb 1, 2013 at 10:28 PM

Not to mention the size advantage Hendricks has. Rinaldo is maybe 5’10”, maybe. But you’re absolutely right. All across the league the referees have been consistently bad. But beyond that there hasnt been consistency in their calls. BS penalties are always gonna happen, but there’s been an unprecedented amount. I’m gonna sound like a homer but the Flyers have been hindered over and over by the refs. Whether it’s 2 goals being waved off, Simmonds mystery unsportsmanlike conduct against Tampa that changed the complexion of the game, or that elbow that could definitely be argued could of been a major. Or atleast a double-minor. Now has the special teams been bad? Yes. Has the compete level been subpar at times? Yes. Have other teams across the league been hosed by poor officiating too? Absolutely. But there is a legitimate, realistic argument to be made that the Flyers have been fighting the refs as well as the other team. Now there were breakdowns tonight, no question about it. Our passing wasn’t crisp. And once again the Flyers refused to shoot on a goalie that had given up 10 goals in two starts. But who’s to say there wouldn’t have been a different outcome if we had had a 5 minute PP. Or if not that, not lost two forwards for the final two periods (one of which is a first-liner and key PP contributor). I am disgusted with the Flyers play this season but I’m also disgusted with the NHLs treatment of poor officiating. There needs to be some sort of consequences for the league wide obstruction of the game. Referees are not supposed to impact the outcome! They’re supposed to be a part of the playing surface, just blending in and keeping the peace. And they’re doing a terrible job.

      • bmoreredfury311 - Feb 1, 2013 at 11:08 PM

i don’t wanna hear it dude, so have the caps, along with every other team. Except for the Pens and the Rangers. There has been a lot of bad calls this year.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Feb 1, 2013 at 11:35 PM

Did I not say there have been terrible calls across the league? Yes I did dude. That doesn’t change the fact Erskine clearly elbowed Simmonds on what was a dirty play. He got away with what should have been a 4 or 5 minute PP. Not to mention terrible calls that littered the rest of the game. It’s not just Flyers fans agreeing with this assessment.

    • sabatimus - Feb 1, 2013 at 10:42 PM

I can’t stand Rinaldo, but MAN he was ANGRY, and I loved the response.

  8. jaybyrd99 - Feb 1, 2013 at 9:56 PM

Even as a ranger fan I have to say there’s no place in the game for that type of elbow and a suspension should be forthcoming .

  9. philly4lyfe - Feb 1, 2013 at 10:00 PM

I love the fact that two refs staring right at that play both somehow managed to miss it. nut in the first minute of the game, rinaldo gets called for hoarding when he completely missed the guy and got all glass/boards. unreal.

    • phillyphanatic77 - Feb 1, 2013 at 10:36 PM

I’d laugh at how bad that call was (and pretty much every call in this game) if I wasn’t so pissed about another Flyers loss.

  10. steelers88 - Feb 1, 2013 at 10:03 PM

Totally unacceptable the refs call Timonen for roughing and yet they don’t call Erickson for roughing. The NHL has to do something about the Refs.
    Signed a Penguins fan.

  11. jimw81 - Feb 1, 2013 at 10:09 PM

i guess people in this post weren’t watching hockey when the last lockout occur with shorten season. refs are calling everything same way they did after 04 lockout. they are calling everything and missing the worst penalties. they only difference is that those refs like a kerry frasher would of thrown Erskine out of the game. refs are bi-product of how the game is run today. 100% bettman approved.

BTW expect a flyers trade very very soon.

  12. steelers88 - Feb 1, 2013 at 10:14 PM

Who would the Flyers trade for? You have to give something to get something.

    • phillyphanatic77 - Feb 1, 2013 at 10:57 PM

Idk where to start on making moves. The only player that would really make a difference is a puck-moving defenseman. But I don’t think Drew Doughty is gonna be walking through the doors of the Wells Fargo Center (In orange and black) any time soon. Even another all-star caliber player probably wouldn’t change much. At this point I think they just hafta ride it out and see if there’s any life tomorrow against Carolina.

  13. myballsareonyourmomschin - Feb 1, 2013 at 10:36 PM

Ronaldo looked like a man possessed… Those are the eyes of a crazy man and one I would definitely never make mad… Hope Simmonds returns quickly because the flyers need all the healthy bodies they can get

  14. icelovinbrotha215 - Feb 1, 2013 at 10:37 PM

That was a dirty play. It has to be a mult-game suspension.

  15. withseidelinn - Feb 1, 2013 at 10:38 PM

The officiating here is a complete joke. Like other people have said, blatant elbow to the head, which is EXACTLY what the league suspends guys for, and no penalty on it. These refs have missed enough dirty hits so far this year because they’ve been concentrating on penalizing players who accidentally brush the puck with their glove on the face off. I’m not a fan of either team here, but this was a complete cheap shot. Erskine probably wont get more than 5 but who knows. Solid response from Rinaldo as well, although he should have fought Erskine.

    • jimw81 - Feb 1, 2013 at 10:44 PM

Erskine had zero business finishing that game. if a flyers player like Rinaldo went after Erskine, flyers would of been penalize for the instigator rule that allows these hits occur.

  16. selldannysell - Feb 1, 2013 at 11:05 PM

Why were the two players who fought thrown out?

    • jimw81 - Feb 1, 2013 at 11:09 PM

they fought before the puck was dropped before the faceoff. linesman fist-pump at the last second and kick out a capitals player at the faceoff circle. that’s considered to be “outside” the whistle play.

      • selldannysell - Feb 2, 2013 at 7:58 AM

        Gotcha. Thanks!

  17. psu4me - Feb 1, 2013 at 11:32 PM

Erskine owes Hendricks a nice meal for fighting after that elbow he threw. It was definitely intentional but I think it was just a bad reaction to simmonds sidestepping him, he just threw it out to get in his way, not good obviously and I’d say at least 3 games but he wasnt generally known as a dirty player before this.

  18. somekat - Feb 2, 2013 at 8:41 AM

Rinaldo gets a “boarding” call when he hits the guy in his side, parallel to the boards

    This bumb gets nothing

At best, even the idiot caps homes can’t say that wasn’t an interference call.

Anyone who is not retarded knows that should of been a major, game misconduct, and a plane ride to NY to find out how long your suspsension will be.

No doubt that would of been the outcome if Rinaldo did this to a cap.

30 years of the nhl having a double standard for the flyers, and counting

    • somekat - Feb 2, 2013 at 8:44 AM

Also, Hendricks should get a game for throwing punches on the ice (Just becuase you were just destroyed doens’t mean you are allowed to do taht)

      But he won’t

  19. melonheadsdaddy - Feb 2, 2013 at 9:14 AM

I have to be honest here. I thought the comments on this post were going to be anti Philadelphia and bashing our fan base for complaining and making excuses about another loss. I’m happy to see that other fans (pens and rangers come to mind) see how this team got totally effed in the A last night. Now don’t get me wrong, the flyers are plaing very poorly and with their pp struggling a 5 minute major might not even have mattered, but this was finally a great conversation amongst some passionate fan bases. I applaude you all. Except the Washington homer. You’re an idiot.

On a side note, how awful is it to watch the flyers try to pass the puck?? Turnover after turnover…

    • bmoreredfury311 - Feb 2, 2013 at 11:23 AM

      Aw poor flyers!
F off… Two teams played that game last night. Flyers had their chances as well and didn’t cash in on them, That call didn’t make your team lose the game. There was bad calls on both teams.Get over it. Your poor Power play and that mid ice turn over, lost that game.
Its funny how bad you guys complain when the shoe was on the other foot.

Signed a Caps fan that needed a W just as bad, and got it.

      • melonheadsdaddy - Feb 3, 2013 at 7:25 AM

?? Did you not read the post? What are you, 12?

  20. bricktop02 - Feb 2, 2013 at 9:19 AM

    Hey skinsovieterps your a A$$H0LE!!!!

  21. eerslbs - Feb 2, 2013 at 2:58 PM

I’ll be the first to say erskine should be suspended but I think it’s tough to say he purposely meant to go for the head. To me he got beat and tried to get in the way and his size is what caused the elbow to head contact. Still should be suspended for 3-5 games. Also apparently people are just glancing over the fact rinaldo threw the first punch while laying on the ice. If I was Hendricks I would have thrown one too.

  22. bobhpine - Feb 2, 2013 at 7:24 PM

    2-6

  23. bricktop02 - Feb 2, 2013 at 7:56 PM

I’m so sorry misterchainbluelightning. Your AN A$$H0LE!!!
