I think Quebec is #1 on their list but whether they get a relocated team like the Coyotes or an expansion team is the thing. Expansion gives huge money.

As the other poster said, market size doesn't equate to anything in the NHL. Phoenix has lost money every year they've been there. Atlanta was a huge market too and look how good Winnipeg is doing now. More fans are showing up and they can charge higher prices. I like the idea of Seattle a lot. If the NHL is expanding in a few years (and the Coyotes need to move) then Seattle gets the team. If the NHL isn't going to expand (or isn't 100% on it) I think Quebec gets the team because hockey will be #1 there and the fans are hungry for a new team. In Seattle they'll be way down on the priority list. Again I think Seattle could be good (for sure better than Phoenix has been) but if there are no plans for expansion then I think the league takes the guaranteed win in Quebec City.

The Seahawks are No.1, no doubt. Mariners attendance is off over 40% from their heyday when they were winning. U of W football is also down from the mid-nineties to about 55,000-60,000 compared to 70,000 in the Don James era. The Sounders fan base is unique unto itself, very dedicated and not much overlap with the other sports in town as far as I can see.

How a new Sonics team would do is an open question. I used to be an NBA nut but after the team got stolen by that pimp Stern I haven't watched a single game on TV. I think there are a lot of fans out there that feel the same and won't ever go back to watching the NBA. If we had an NHL team, I would definitely be a season ticket holder. WHL hockey seems to have a fanbase of around 10,000 - 12,000 total between the two teams in the area (Thunderbirds and Silvertips).

The other factor is the potential for a new regional sports network built around the Mariners coming up in 2015. Rumor is the M's may get a 10-year, $150 million deal from a new sports network. They would need other programming to build that brand around, and that's where an NHL team could benefit immensely.

My only concern with Seattle is just that the NHL team is likely in line behind the Seahawks, Mariners, SuperSonics, Sounders and U of W football and basketball, is there enough people who would support the team?
Market size doesn't really matter though, Phoenix has what 2.5 million (I think) in the area but they don't have nearly as many hockey fans Edmonton (close to 1 million) or Winnipeg (750,000) who are willing to go to games night in and night out. One could reasonably think an NHL team is better off in a market where they're guaranteed 17,000 fans a night than in a city where if things work out the could possibly get 18,000 for a few games a year.

Also QC's geographic location doesn't matter, a lot more NHL players from Quebec, Saskatchewan, Finland, Sweden and Russia where it's cold in the winter than there is from warm climates.

And my final point for the mention of geographic imbalance, it doesn't matter, Winnipeg is playing in the eastern conference right now, where they don't belong, and will easily be swapped for a Phoenix team moving east.

I heard yesterday on Prime Time Sports not to be shocked if the NHL expands by two teams (Toronto 2 and Quebec City) and then immediately uses the expansion fees to buy and contract 4 weak teams, leaving the NHL at 28 teams, seems like it might be a good move.

I think Seattle will get a team BUT if they don't go the expansion route you have to believe that Quebec City is next in line, they've got building plans, with financing approved, ready to put shovels in the ground, they've got a suitable interim arena (15,000 seat Le Colisee) which is a little more ideal than the Key Arena, they got a billionaire owner who has his own sports channel ready for the programming and the two biggest factors that I think give it the edge over Seattle right now, you have a market of proven fans and it's the only major sports attraction in town.

In Seattle right now, there's a good chance they'll get fans, but it's tough to say if there's enough hockey fans willing to pay NHL prices. Add to that you've got the Seahawks, Mariners, Sounders, New Supersonics and U of W football and basketball to compete with.

Phoenix has been such a mess for so long, take the sure thing now, and then move to the other market once that's secure.

While it's true Seattle is an unknown in terms of NHL marketing potential, I think it differs than the experiment in Arizona. Putting a professional ice hockey team in the middle of a desert was pure foolishness. Sure they've gotten a few diehard fans, but the attendance ratings just proves that it didn't spread to the point where it's worth keeping them there.
Seattle, however, is almost on the northern border, only a few hours drive from Vancouver. They have a WHL team, and hockey is played and known in the city. This, unlike other brilliant ideas from Bettman, would be an appropriate 'experiment'.

Sure, Quebec is definitely a worthy market and deserves. But the Seattle guy is very eager to get a second tenant to go with his NBA franchise once he completes his purchase of the Sacramento Kings. And while Seattle is an unknown as far as a hockey fanbase, it is a larger market.

But here's the biggest thing - the east-west counterbalance. The league is already trying to deal with too many teams in the east and moving a team from Phoenix to QC only makes that worse.

And while Quebec may have already broken ground, that fact doesn't matter quite as much when you consider that Kansas City has had an NHL-ready arena in operation for more than five years now.

The mayor told Jamison weeks ago that there wouldn't be an extension, this is getting beyond pathetic. I'll still root for the team in Seattle, not Quebec though.
Markham I think is more in the expansion category or if they do relocate another team in a few years. If the Yotes move it's Seattle or Quebec. I'm not sure which one. There are arguments for both. I personally think if they plan to expand they can milk Quebec more than Seattle so let a team relocate to Seattle and expand to QC and/or Toronto. However, as far as we know, there is really only one potential owner in Quebec and maybe they can get a bidding war in Seattle. Also I think Quebec is the safer bet.

Hey maybe I'm wrong and the team stays put. But if Jamison couldn't get the deal done, I'm not sure anyone else can or would be willing too., Especially seeing as how it's taken us 4 years just to get to this point.

“Glendale is not your cash register.” - didn't know that the registers are THAT filled in Glendale ;-)
(As far as I know they burn many millions a year in Phoenix, and the taxpayers chip in substantially with this arena deal.)
