I give all the credit in the world to the Isles for last night’s win…I was at that game, and tried giving Nabby the stink eye, but it didn’t work. He stood on his head beginning to end. The Pens were absolutely embarrassing to watch, though. While I myself can’t boo my own team, there certainly wasn’t anything to CHEER for. And I am glad to hear the players took it to heart.

This idea that the Pens have invested in only two guys is ridiculous. Two other guys on the team went to the All-Star game last year. And most contending teams have at least two (lesser) forwards that make 7 or close to 7 million. The Pens have decent offensive depth. While they don’t have Staal now, they didn’t have Sid last year – when they led the league in scoring.

The problem this year is that essentially ALL of our depth forwards – Kuntiz (especially), Dupuis, Cooke, Kennedy, Sutter – to a man, are underachieving. We’ve seen them all play – for years – far, far better than they are right now.

Not that I’ve heard any Penguins say it, but the fatigue excuse is garbage. It may have worked when they played into June two years in a row a couple years ago, but it’s not like they’ve had to play late into the season recently. They’ve been bounced in the 1st round twice the past two years. Adding in a lockout, and relatively evenly spread minutes; these guys have no excuses.

Philly fans may have their faults but this story has been blown completely out of proportion. Just another way for the national media to misrepresent Philly fans. It was during a year when the Eagles were their regular terrible selves, like 2-10 or so. The Sixers had just traded Wilt Chamberlain, the Phillies were as bad as the eagles (if not worse), and the Flyers had just come into existence. Eagles management had consistently cut corners, assembled one of the worst rosters in NFL history, and a coaching staff to match. The fans braved inclement weather and paid good money to see a terrible product. The real Santa did not show because of the weather, so the front office decided to grab a scraggy, skinny drunk off the streets and throw an oversized santa outfit on him. They sent him out and he stumbled around like an idiot. It was just another “F U!” From Eagles management to the fans, so yes the fans booed the bum. It was justified. Just wanted to set the record straight.

As for the Pens, maybe the “experts” should start to realize that two players don’t make a team.
Not often that you make sense but you are on the money..it’s a team not a duo..

Trouble with hockey is that the teams play at two different levels, regular season and playoffs. Sometimes I wonder if we are seeing anything close to 100% effort and it’s happening more and more often. They see an 8th seed win the cup and figure, why work my butt off during the regular season when all I have to do is get into the playoffs. Then they think they can turn it on like magic. You would have thought the Pens would see that strategy didn’t work last year and it won’t work again. Fans deserve a partial refund for a partial effort like last night. Disco Dan better soon figure out something. Maybe they need some of that Therrian discipline.
Props to the Isles for a solid effort.

This – this is dead on accurate. The first PP last night the Islanders registered to shorthanded shots while the Pens registered zero.

The James Neal on the far point experience isn’t working – it connected for one goal but has otherwise been a bad idea. No one is comfortable.

I posted before the season started that this short season could make the Isles playoff contenders. They have a lot of good young talent, Nabokov playing well, and DePietro who can also play well. The core of the team has been together now for a few years and they now have matured together. I can easily see them in the playoffs this year and the Flyers out, especially with all of the injuries to Philly. (This all the opinion of a Ranger fan).

This is something the Pens, Rangers, and Flyers have all been guilty of so far this season. It’s amazing that despite have limited practice time these teams continue to overthink their PPs. Just throw the puck on net and look for rebounds/deflections. I think the Rangers had more shots shorthanded than the Flyers had on their powerplays. These teams need to Quit trying to make a perfect pass/play and shoot the freakin puck. If they figure out the obvious then maybe the Atlantic division will return to normal.

I appreciate everyone in the comments giving the Isles their due credit. As originally stated, my comment was mainly aimed at coverage of the Penguins/Islanders in general and not specifically this article. Having said that, this article is not perfectly innocent with statements like:

“Fans rained down boos on the Penguins during a 4-1 loss to the Islanders, a game in which Pittsburgh looked lethargic on special teams, going 0-for-3 on the power play while allowing the Isles to score on both of their man advantages.”

It doesn’t care to mention that the Isles are an astonishing 94% on the PK (something like 16-17) and that the Islanders PP has been very effective this year.

I understand that it’s a story that an elite team like the Pens lost to a “lowly” team like the Isles at home; what annoys me is when coverage (not just PHT) suggests that it has everything to do with a poor effort from the Penguins and that the Islanders don’t even factor into the equation.

Yep I’m not sure why you’d think you’d be getting a ton of thumb’s down, but the Isles played a HELL of a game. Out-hussled, out-hit, out-passed, and just played great. I don’t think the comments are one-sided though, when you look at the topic of the article (this isn’t a post-game recap, so much as it’s an article about the boos).

Another Pens fan here, about to say the same thing. Islanders definitely deserved the win yesterday, and I agree people are not giving them enough credit. Nabakov was a wall in net, Grabner was an absolute rocket on skates, and Tavares is (as always) very dangerous. The penalty kill is also excellent and your power play was 2-2…which is a hell of a lot better than 3 shots from 9 mins of PP time (disgraceful).

I felt embarrassed watching the game yesterday. No one looked like they were ready to play, from the forwards to the goalie. You cannot expect to beat anybody if you go into a game with absolutely no emotion like that. Thursday won’t be much of a game unless the team decides they want to wake up. In a shortened season, every single game matters…I hope they get that message sooner than later.

Agreed. Fatigue is a weak excuse this season. Obviously it will be a factor, but not one teams should point to after a loss. Every team is playing a compact schedule and every team will have their tired days. Can’t use that as an excuse when the other 29 have the same circumstances.

Pens fan here, and you’re right – the Islanders out played the pens last night from top to bottom. they pressed continuously, stacked the line on the PP, and Nabakov looked like he was seeing beach balls out there. While this Isles team is different from seasons past, the bigger story is probably the sorry effort a team with two of the best offensive players in hockey came within a minute and change of being shut out by a team that has missed the playoffs for five years, and looking horrible for a solid sixty minutes.

I like PHT because of the comments section, everybody has a viewpoint and it is good to hear most of them. It is for these viewpoints that I logged in today, as well as the day after the wings beat the wild to check out the posts for the wings games. No mention of either game the day after, but no shortage of articles about the wings patchwork defense or thier slow start a week ago. Every game should have a recap story, not just the teams the editors like. So, in short- I catch your drift, islesjp. Keep winning Isles and make them cover you.

Of course no credit is given to the Islanders- had to have just been the Penguins having an off night. No mention of a stunning game from Nabokov with 37 saves and a near shut out, no mention of a complete Isles effort with 4 goal scorers and no mention of John Tavares and the Isles taking a big steaming dump all over the Pens at home. (PHT did give props to JT’s goal in an earlier post, I’m mostly aiming this comment towards Penguins/Islanders coverage in general- and whiny entitled Penguins fans)

Typical but I’m used to it. I just enjoy stewing in an extremely satisfying and validating victory. Different team this year gents.

Now let the thumb-downs rains…..

It was impossible to miss the difference in intensity and energy between the teams. The Pens looked exhausted from the drop of the puck in the 2nd.

Having said that, most of the booing was occurring on the Power Play, because there were 5 men on the ice that refused to SHOOT THE PUCK. The passing is not where it needs to be right now because of the lock-out, short camp, etc….so please, Pens…keep it simple and just shoot the damn puck.
