Video: Did Yakupov’s celebration go too far?

Jan 27, 2013, 9:03 PM EDT

Nail Yakupov wasn’t shy about expressing his elation after scoring a game-tying goal in the waning moments of the Edmonton Oilers’ eventual 2-1 OT win against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday.

Many people in the hockey world haven’t hesitated to opine about Yakupov evoking Theo Fleury’s sliding celebration, either. (A lot of people have used the word “celly,” which annoys a lot of other people.)

As far as key hockey figures go, Don Cherry gave it a big thumbs down. See how Keith Jones and Mike Milbury feel about it in the video below.

No I think he could have slid a lot farther if he wanted too !

  2. Stiller43 - Jan 27, 2013 at 9:15 PM

    No.

It waa a one time thing..,wont happen again, he was just excited

    • hockeywithdrawal - Jan 28, 2013 at 11:04 AM

Actually I’m fine with the slide, and don’t think it’s that big a deal. I did watch some footage a while ago from Edmonton’s prospect camp – he did the same slide after his goal in camp in front of the fans. I think he genuinely likes the spotlight and to entertain the fans. There are worse things.

To me, big deal, the guy slid. The other teams are free to check him (cleanly) if he irritates them.

    Not all

  4. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Jan 27, 2013 at 9:23 PM

No. Why are we still talking about this? Obviously if he makes a habit of celebrating like this then it’s a problem but when you’re a rookie and you score a big goal like that was you get to go nuts.

  5. redwingsfan999 - Jan 27, 2013 at 9:23 PM

    Not at* all

  6. ironman721 - Jan 27, 2013 at 9:27 PM

Yeah if he would have made it past the blue line, that would have been to far.

  7. killabri - Jan 27, 2013 at 9:38 PM

I don’t have a problem with it. He scored a big goal and got really excited, didn’t hold up the game excessively and most importantly didn’t taunt and/or show up the Kings. He shouldn’t make a habit of stuff like this, but for now let the kid enjoy it and you can be sure the next time the Kings see him they’ll work extra hard to keep him off the score sheet.

  8. ironman721 - Jan 27, 2013 at 9:47 PM

I think all NHL players should get together tomorrow and for one day only, everyone who scores should slide like that. For no other reason but to piss Cherry off.

  9. bubblehead22 - Jan 27, 2013 at 9:50 PM

Don Cherry thumbs down, my thumbs up

  10. letthecoldcome - Jan 27, 2013 at 9:59 PM

    Oh my god, who cares?

  11. bardown66 - Jan 27, 2013 at 10:00 PM

It’s fine, stop bringing it up

  12. biffnasty - Jan 27, 2013 at 10:02 PM

time for a new story..this is more played out than a typical overweight, mullet sporting devils fan in a looney toon leather jacket

  13. rpiotr01 - Jan 27, 2013 at 10:45 PM

Geez who cares. It was 3 games into the season, in 2 weeks no one will even remember this.

  14. 2jivecrew - Jan 27, 2013 at 11:19 PM

It’s overkill for me, not because of the slide itself but because when your teammates are about to mob you in celebration and then you make a concerted effort to ditch them so you can do your own thing…….that’s what I have a problem with. But whatever.

    • joshuakorr - Jan 27, 2013 at 11:34 PM

I had the same thought, I like it when hockey players celebrate, but here he made the goal about himself and not about the team. So when I saw this I was a little surprised. But whatever, he’s young.

P.S. remember when Overchkin scored fifty and put his stick on the ground like it was on fire, that was a little bit more insulting.

      • rsl22 - Jan 28, 2013 at 12:52 AM

That OV celebration was insulting. It was retarded. And I’m a Caps fan.

As for Yakupov, also retarded. Had it been an OT winner, then maybe it would be different. But it wasn’t the winner.

      • rsl22 - Jan 28, 2013 at 12:53 AM

        Do’h. I meant, it WASN’T insulting….it was still retarded.

In what world is Don Cherry a key hockey figure?

    • misterchainbluelightning - Jan 28, 2013 at 2:27 PM

The one where he played hockey professionally, coached and has worked in the business for near 50 years and is friends with nearly every Hall of Famer ever.

Makes this classic look tame..(still the best one I’ve ever seen….http://m.youtube.com/results?q=tiger%20williams%20rides%20his%20stick#/watch?v=FpYQkuEurfI

  17. kappy32 - Jan 28, 2013 at 2:06 AM

Way too over the top for a rookie. If Ovie did something like that, I would be okay with it – Ovie is an established, proven star. However, Yakupov hasn’t done anything in the NHL yet & he should temper his excitement until he reaches star status.

  18. jhuck92 - Jan 28, 2013 at 5:58 AM

We’re still on this? Look, if the league wants to fine him (I have no idea why), they can go ahead and do so. But NHL hockey is back after a 4-month wait and people are already fired up about a goal celebration? Not even a dirty hit or a blown call, but a goal celebration. It makes me thankful hockey is back when I see a big goal and a better celebration. I said it before, I think the game needs more of this. And what did you see in the #hockeyisback video? Orr soaring, Messier jumping up and down, and Ovi jumping into the boards. It’s Nail’s first big goal of his young career. Let it be.

    • 2jivecrew - Jan 28, 2013 at 10:54 AM

Really? The game needs more selfishness? Ok.

      • jhuck92 - Jan 28, 2013 at 12:18 PM

I’ve been waiting (and so has Nail) a long 4 months for something like this, and now I’m being told “He went too far.” Get real with yourself, man.

  19. valoisjoeybfeld69 - Jan 28, 2013 at 7:28 AM

No. However, no more. He did his thing and now no more unless the goal is a Stanley cup winning one.

  20. capsfan19 - Jan 28, 2013 at 8:40 AM

No way. Shut up barry melrose you’re just jealous.
Was teemu selanne’s celebrations too much? If was his was of course ovi’s were.
I think we can all admit anisimov took it too far last year :P
Let the rookie celebrate! Go ahead yakupov do yo thang!

  21. beergold - Jan 28, 2013 at 12:20 PM

Yes but……….cut the kid some slack he was pissing his pants he was so excited – guarentee it won’t happen again unless it is the game winner of the Stanley Cup deciding game.

Imagine a Leaf showing that kind of excitement…..Thought not!

  22. misterchainbluelightning - Jan 28, 2013 at 2:31 PM

This celebration is only for Game Winners in Playoff games. Period.

He is welcome to keep it up though, players will be just sure to target him more and punish him for it in the future.

Hockey is a game where instant karma can and will get you, if he keeps it up he will get jumped and have runs taken at him.
