Slacker: Marleau scores once as Sharks keep rolling

After becoming the first player in 95 years* to start a season with four consecutive multi-goal games, Patrick Marleau totally mailed it in on Sunday by scoring one measly goal.

The San Jose Sharks managed to survive Marleau’s sloth (he also had an assist, which is OK) and beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-1 today.

All requisite sarcasm aside, San Jose’s red-hot top line continued to dominate despite back-to-back games. Joe Thornton (one goal, one assist) and Joe Pavelski (two goals) rounded out that trio’s fantastic evening.

Here are the season totals for that line:

Marleau, 33: nine goals, for assists for 13 points
Thornton, 33: three goals, 10 assists for 13 points
Pavelski, 28: two goals, eight assists for 10 points

That’s all in five contests.

Now, this hot streak is certain to subside; Most obviously, Marleau’s shooting percentage (37.5) is sure to plummet.

Still, the Sharks are now 5-0-0, giving them a nice head start in the Pacific Division. Antti Niemi‘s also quietly off to a strong start, boasting a 4-0-0 record with a .933 save percentage and 2.01 GAA.

Keeping up this pace is unlikely, but where do you rank the Sharks after this scorching start?

* – And second ever. Oh, and if you want another eye-popping stat: Ryane Clowe piled up 35 penalty minutes on Sunday.

Keep em coming! Sharks are destroying the west.

I’ve never seen them move the puck that well before & their PK looks great (esp. compared to last year). I definitely think we have Larry Robinson to thank for that. It’s great to see all of them out there playing for each other & backing each other up. They’ve always given me a reason to doubt them in the past, but if they stay consistent I really think we could see the Stanley Cup in SJ this year. Can’t wait for the game next Tuesday, then we’ll get to see who the better team in the West really is this year!

Too bad Patty couldn’t get that 2nd!

Schneider denied him on that backhand off the feed from Pavelski.. Love that Marleau has been going to the tough areas by the net, exactly what we’ve been needing from him.

Marleau came out of nowhere playing like this. Hopefully he can keep it up. I’m not a Sharks fan, but he does take a fair bit of slack for under performing all the time. Also, Daniel Winnik with 5 or 6 goals so far? What?

Marleau has as many or more goals than four teams….that’s not bad, I guess.

Stanley Cup playoff slacker is more apropos for Marleau. Remember, goose eggs against the Blues and similar past playoff performances. He always dominates during the regular season, but when teams start to seriously gap up on him and check him tougher during the playoffs forcing him to really compete for his offense, he usually disappears. Hopefully he flips the script this playoff season, but I would contain my excitement until then.

      129 games, 52 goals, 36 assists, 13 GWG.

I’m a Sharks fan, and I know as well as anybody that Marleau has had some crummy playoff series during his career, but can we stop acting like he is the worst playoff performer ever? Stop getting headlines from Roenick. All sorts of different parts of these Sharks teams haven’t shown up at times in the playoffs over the years- it isn’t all his fault.

The Canucks are d-bags. Bieksa is a clown. Those traits were on display tonight.

Yeah lets not focus on the guy who got 5 penalties and a game misconduct, Clowe’s panties were bunched all game.

      • sw19womble - Jan 28, 2013 at 3:55 AM

That’s Clowe’s job. He even tries to interfere with the flow of the game while he’s on the bench ;)

Sorry, but I loved watching Burrows get spanked by Mr. Clowe.

As a guy on the East coast, I’m a bit pissed that the three best teams in the league will barely be on TV and won’t be playing here at all. Damn lockout.

St. Louis, San Jose and Chicago look pretty damn solid. I’m already looking forward to the Western Conference semifinals.

Think you meant to say four assists and not for assist
