Don Cherry says Nail Yakupov “acted like an idiot” celebrating his goal

Jan 27, 2013, 12:57 PM EDT

Nail Yakupov‘s incredible game-tying goal and celebration against Los Angeles earlier this week showed the hockey world what an excitable young star he might just turn out to be.

Most fans seemed to love his exuberance in sliding across the ice on his knees after potting a goal with just five seconds left in regulation. Most fans aren’t Don Cherry, however.

During his customary slot on Hockey Night in Canada, Grapes sounded off on Yakupov saying he “acted like an idiot” celebrating the way he did. Check out his full rant in video form here. [YouTube]

While most people compared his celebration to that of Theo Fleury’s back in 1991, Cherry also called Fleury an idiot for celebrating that way too. Cherry saying the Kings “will remember this to the dying day” is a nice bit of hyperbole, but hey, it’s Grapes.

Now go ahead and play the game the right way, would ya? *thumbs up*

I had to turn the volume of the video up… It was really hard to hear Cherry over his suit!

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Jan 27, 2013 at 3:21 PM

Coming from an old clown who is wearing a couch as a sport coat to get attention is funny !

  2. misterchainbluelightning - Jan 27, 2013 at 1:06 PM

Cue the know nothings tears about Cherry being 100% correct. Dustin Brown and King players will remember some rookie skating half the ice and sliding to his knees like he just saved Jesus’s 2nd life by scoring a goal. The entire Kings line-up will play just a lil more harder vs the Oilers and especially Yakupov.

We seen a bunch of rookies 1st NHL goals, not a single one of them lost it like Nail.

    • ron05342 - Jan 27, 2013 at 1:22 PM

      1. It was his second goal, as I recall the Kings game announcers saying. After looking it up, he scored his 1st goal against Vancouver on Jan. 20.

      2. I was okay with the celebration, actually, and I am a Kings fan.

      3. Yeah, the Kings will probably remember the celebration, and play a little harder against Edmonton then they normally would. That’s a good thing, in my book. They need to step it up.

      • misterchainbluelightning - Jan 27, 2013 at 1:25 PM

That’s why you’re just a fan and not a player, and you just admitted that the Kings will remember it. Which supports the idea that it was an idiot thing to do.

      • sjsblitz - Jan 27, 2013 at 2:22 PM

        1. First goal was against S.J not Vancouver, facts straight first before correcting someone else please.

        2. Celebration was awesome, take that away and all you have is Quick over-exaggerating a GWG

        3. Will indeed make for an interesting rematch

      • ron05342 - Jan 27, 2013 at 2:35 PM

@sjsblitz, you are right, I read the Wiki article wrong on that.

  3. Stiller43 - Jan 27, 2013 at 1:07 PM

Meh…i dont really find anything wrong with it. I think he wont do it again, but his raw emotion celebration was much better than celebrations like the ‘machine gun towards the goal’ or the ovi ‘hot stick’ celebration.

This kids what, 19? And scored a big tying goal with like a second left…i would be that excited too.

  4. majbobby - Jan 27, 2013 at 1:14 PM

Oooooo my cut him, bench him, suspend him now (end sarcasm). Someone enjoying the SPORT he plays.

  5. sjsharks66 - Jan 27, 2013 at 1:16 PM

I hope the kings also remember Joe Thornton’s series winning goal celebration against them.

Yeah, yeah the kings won the cup. I know lol

  6. icelovinbrotha215 - Jan 27, 2013 at 1:26 PM

I wonder if he would’ve said the same thing if Nail was Canadian. Just saying.

    • cshearing - Jan 27, 2013 at 1:54 PM

Well, he said the same thing about Theo Fleury, so I am guessing yes. I don’t agree with Cherry here, but I think your assertion is ridiculous.

Look, if this was simply his first goal I would absolutely agree. But there was lots of context here with this goal. Quick was ragging on Yakupov the whole game, the Oil had the tying goal called back dubiously…lots of context. The crowd was going absolutely nits and Nail fed on that. Trying to pretend every goal is the same and should be treated as such is ludicrous.

But Don is so old school he makes no exceptions. I understand his point even though I disagree.

      • 19to77 - Jan 27, 2013 at 2:16 PM

Actually, he makes lots of exceptions, because he’s a hypocrite who’s literally too old now to remember his own opinions. Fleury posted an update to his Twitter after Don’s rant last night – in which he criticized BOTH celebrations and made Fleury’s sound almost as bad – saying:

“I do remember Don shaking my hand after scoring that goal in Edm and him congratulating me. Did an interview with Ron right after the goal.”

So, yeah. Don doesn’t even remember his own opinions anymore. If a white Canadian had scored it, he’d be shaking his hand.

      • icelovinbrotha215 - Jan 27, 2013 at 4:20 PM

I’ve heard and seen enough of Don Cherry to know what type of person he is. Making a big issue out of ONE celly. He should move on. If any player has a problem with it, don’t let Nail score. If a T.V. personality has a problem with, then turn off the tube when Nail is playing. Sometimes people can be petty.

    • bigoldorcafromvan - Jan 27, 2013 at 5:14 PM

If he was Canadian and from Ontario playing for Boston this would have been the best thing for hockey except for a big fight. Wish Cherry would retire.

  7. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Jan 27, 2013 at 1:27 PM

I usually like Cherry but come on. He only says Theo acted like an idiot in an effort to not come off hypocritical. If it was Hall doing that he would just be a good ole Kingston boy who’s worked hard and deserves to celebrate. Lighten up, Don.

    • 19to77 - Jan 27, 2013 at 2:24 PM

The funny thing is, it makes him more of a hypocrite, and also a liar, to insult Fleury’s celebration after applauding him for it twenty years ago. He just didn’t have a Russian comparable to be racist toward back then.

      • sunderlanding - Jan 27, 2013 at 4:08 PM

Are you stupid? Cherry congradulated Fleury for the goal not the celebration. I’m sure if you had’ve asked him back then he would’ve said the celebration was too much, but Fleury had scored a big goal for his team and Don congradulated him on that. You can appreciate one and not the other, or didn’t you get that far in school?

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Jan 27, 2013 at 5:00 PM

Such condescension, yet surely you know that ‘congradulate’ is not a word. Or did you not get that far in school?

    • sunderlanding - Jan 27, 2013 at 5:54 PM

It’s a word. I just didn’t spell it right, or didn’t you get that far in school? Furthermore, I’m not sure it’s condescension. What was said didn’t make any sense. Cherry was clearly talking about the celebration, and the congratulation (did I get it this time?) was clearly about the goal. Maybe I was a little abrasive, but hey it’s the internet. If you’re going to call someone a racist maybe you should be prepared to have an insult thrown back at you. Lastly, this is a hockey page not a book review. If you want to waste time talking about spelling and avoiding the point (probably because you don’t have one) do it on the proper page.

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Jan 27, 2013 at 6:32 PM

I agree with you. I’m generally not a fan of people playing grammar police on boards like these. But if you are going to insult people and call them stupid you damn well better not make any stupid mistakes of your own while doing so, lest you look like a fool.

  8. pensfan603 - Jan 27, 2013 at 1:41 PM

I give theo some respect because if i remember correctly his had some importantance, Nails was just like.. stupid, you scored get over it, you can go do that when you win the stanley cup or break a record.

  9. broadstbully33 - Jan 27, 2013 at 1:45 PM

If nail was Canadian it would have been fine

    • 19to77 - Jan 27, 2013 at 2:22 PM

He congratulated Fleury on his when he scored it, so yeah, pretty much. In just about the same situation, a white Canadian scored one and he remembers Don shook his hand at the time. Not a word about “excessive celebrations.” Probably a few about “good old Canadian boys,” though, knowing him.

  10. jaybird22seven - Jan 27, 2013 at 1:47 PM

Yakapov is an idiot !!! I can’t wait till someone takes his head off.

  11. mclovinhockey - Jan 27, 2013 at 1:55 PM

Yup, nail is a moron, scoring a goal with 5 secs left if regulation to force overtime and grab your team at least one point (also I think it was his first right? Didn’t look that up). I can understand cherry being an ass if the oilers were up by 4 or down by 5 or something where the goal meant nothing, but this was huge.
Don is an ass, when Crosby won it for team Canada and tossed his gloved in the air did cherry say anything? When savard won the OT game vs Philly and tossed his stick into the crowd which usually would result in a suspension, did cherry say anything bad?
No, if nail was on a team cherry liked and from Canada, cherry would have loved it.
    Don is a joke.

  12. pensfan1 - Jan 27, 2013 at 1:57 PM

I don’t buy the “if he was Canadian” argument. Fleury is Canadian and Cherry called him an idiot when he did it, too. Take it for what it’s worth. Cherry is Cherry and he takes it as his job to wind people up and turn them loose so we can comment on it like this. He’s just really opinionated. What would hockey be like if he was still coaching? The game will be what it will be and that includes personalities. To me Nail and Grapes are in the same mold – flamboyant and noisy!

    • alexb64 - Jan 27, 2013 at 3:08 PM

Cherry is using revisionist history to make it seem like it isn’t just because Yakupov is Russian. Since the Internet age began more people call him out for his jingoistic crap so he’s aware of having to hide it now.

    • pensfan603 - Jan 27, 2013 at 5:20 PM

      What a copier..

  13. chadmillar89 - Jan 27, 2013 at 2:09 PM

it wasnt the celebration that rubbed me the wrong way. and im a kings fan it was how he celebrated. Your a rookie and wanted nothing to do with your teammates you wanted to be the center of attention. and that showed alot about him i think. i like the celebration with the teammates rather than the solo look at me kinda of thing.

  14. staviesteelo - Jan 27, 2013 at 2:53 PM

Celebrating a game tying goal with 3 seconds left is being an idiot now, c’mon give me a break. Not a big deal. I enjoyed the celebration. It was off pure emotion.

  15. jacobknicks - Jan 27, 2013 at 2:57 PM

Don Cherry looks like Santa Claus and Dwight Schrutes adult love child

  16. canucks18 - Jan 27, 2013 at 3:29 PM

Give me a break!!! Enjoy the game! The kid scores a game tying goal with 4.7 seconds left and everyone wants to say its disrespect. All of you buzz kill/fun police need to remember its a game and the players should get to enjoy themselves. Bunch of sour faced babies

  17. buddysguys - Jan 27, 2013 at 3:35 PM

    says dons suit….

  18. valoisjoeybfeld69 - Jan 27, 2013 at 3:37 PM

Wow! Sad to read that fans expect players to remember a celebration to play harder against a team. Why can’t they just play hard to earn their millions and get the W?

  19. wranglerick - Jan 27, 2013 at 4:21 PM

I’m just happy hockey is back

You seem to know a thing or two about attention seekers. Bravo!

      • 19to77 - Jan 27, 2013 at 6:18 PM

        Capslock: cruise control for stupid.

  21. jcmeyer10 - Jan 27, 2013 at 5:29 PM

Hey Don, stop busting his Cherries. (I didn’t see the celebration, just wanted to make the joke).

  22. skinsovieterps - Jan 27, 2013 at 5:33 PM

This guy is POS, it’s because the guy is Russian, if it was his beloved gerbal hider Crosby, guarantee he would have said nothing!

  23. arsttn - Jan 27, 2013 at 5:57 PM

Cherry never could stand someone getting more attention than he gets. Let the kids be kids. Too soon they’ll be belly aching about their salary. Let them have fun while they can /:,

  24. mp1131211 - Jan 27, 2013 at 6:00 PM

He’s got a lot of experience acting like an idiot, so he would know.

  25. badguy711 - Jan 27, 2013 at 6:02 PM

He did look like an idiot.

And as a recently transplanted new citizen of Edmonton, the Oiler Fans were the most obnoxious in my almost 4 years of living here. They were all acting like they won the Cup the next day. Probably because it was their first big win in 6 years.

  26. jhuck92 - Jan 27, 2013 at 7:33 PM

Don needs to change his wardrobe before he calls anyone an idiot. I swear, he’s like a Canadian Skip Bayless and Craig Sager.

  27. ironman721 - Jan 27, 2013 at 9:40 PM

Anyone who dresses like a pro wrestler should not be calling anyone an idiot. Besides he could have slid a lot farther if he really wanted to.

  28. budvw14 - Jan 28, 2013 at 8:40 AM

When will HNIC realize that absolutely no one outside of Canada gives two $&(+$ what Grapes has to say?

  29. antkowiak666 - Jan 28, 2013 at 8:50 AM

they had just got hosed on a game tying goal before that had happened, forgive the guy for showing a lil emotion and excitement after that, sheesh.
