Evander Kane shaved “YMCMB” into his hair

Jan 25, 2013, 2:08 PM EDT

Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane has a new haircut, and it looks like this:

If you’re not familiar with the acronym, YMCMB stands for “Young Money Cash Money Billionaires,” which is a combination of Young Money Entertainment — a record label founded by rapper Lil Wayne — and Cash Money Records, the label that originally signed Lil Wayne.

At any rate, this might be a topic of conversation in Winnipeg after the whole “Vegas cash phone” episode.

(Not saying it should be a topic of conversation, just that it probably will be.)

I usually don’t openly bash any players or teams on here…

    but what a tool.

    • misterchainbluelightning - Jan 25, 2013 at 3:45 PM

Who the hell cares about some kids haircut?

Seriously, reading all this garbage about a black kid having a record label logo shaven into his head causes this type of “outrage/bashing” is ridiculous.

It’s a HAIRCUT, people have a LONG HISTORY of crazy junk done to their hair. OH NO MERCY ME A BLACK KID WITH SOMETHING SILLY SHAVEN IN HIS HEAD.

Most of you people need to get a reality check, I didn’t know you all were so sensitive about hairstyles.

      • misterchainbluelightning - Jan 25, 2013 at 3:48 PM

“I didnt know white folks were so serious about Pie.”

      • ibieiniid - Jan 25, 2013 at 3:58 PM

and i’ve made fun of every single one for it, wont stop.

if i see someone wearing a bow-tie, I make fun of them every time too. this guy looks just as silly. plus, what’s the internet for if not for making fun of people you don’t know?

this is a serious case of no harm, no foul. just let it happen.

      • misterchainbluelightning - Jan 25, 2013 at 4:05 PM

        Teasin and making fun
“ive lost all respect, blah blah blah, inference based on a hair style, blah blah”

      • bcsteele - Jan 25, 2013 at 4:04 PM

        Fair enough…

So explain the “Money Phone” deal. What’s his excuse for that…?

        Still a tool…sorry.

      • hockeyflow33 - Jan 26, 2013 at 1:15 AM

Regardless of what color he is, shaving a record label into your head is beyond stupid.

Also, what kind of a self-righteous racist are you that the first thing you feel the need to bring up is skin color?

    • sal1117 - Jan 26, 2013 at 5:38 PM

Evander was a whole more professional in ATLANTA, but then Atlanta is a Major League city and where Evander played two years. But when you play in a Minor League city, in a Very Minor League city, with Fair-Weather fans, what would you expect.

People here in Atlanta who stay in contact with Evander, know how he MISSES Atlanta, and HATES the Minor League city he is forced to play in now.

A Sad event, showing the NHL needs to return to ATLANTA A.S.A.P. !

Who needs hockey in a Minor League canada city !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. elemeno89 - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:17 PM

this only solidifies my thought that kane does this type of stuff to troll the winnipeg media. and with the way taht the media treats this kid, its perfectly warranted.

keep pissing the media off kaner, youre making my day bud.

    • comeonnowguys - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:49 PM

There’s only one Kaner, and he’s (looking at the watch/timestamp) coming home from the bars right about now.

      • elemeno89 - Jan 25, 2013 at 5:40 PM

as a buffalo native i am ashamed that my poor proofreading skills didn’t notice that i hit the r key after typing kane. i apologize.

    Some guys just need attention.

  4. 19to77 - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:18 PM

How is it that every time I hear about this guy, he’s somehow made himself even more of an asshole?

  5. eagles512 - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:22 PM

    What a complete idiot

  6. bigbadbruins77 - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:25 PM

he should play in the NBA. We all know you make a lot of money dude, you’re a pro athlete…BALLIN

    • 19to77 - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:27 PM

Heh. Yeah, he fits that bill way better. He’d make a better basketball player or a rapper than a hockey player. At least this prima donna BS is appreciated in the NBA.

      • killacam42 - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:31 PM

BLACK PEOPLE STAY AWAY… good God, did you read this before you posted it?

      • ibieiniid - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:36 PM

I didn’t see him say anything about race

      • 19to77 - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:50 PM

Ibieniid – yeah, it’s not a race thing to me. The NBA and the music industry are just like that. Glamour, money, prima donna behaviour. It’s just how those businesses carry themselves.

Killacam – I’ll stop referencing the rap industry when he stops shaving Lil Wayne’s labels into his hair.

      • davebabychreturns - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:50 PM

Neither of the two on this thread originally explicitly mentioned race, but let’s not pretend that saying “why don’t you go play basketball” about a black kid isn’t going to look like it’s at least partially driven by this player’s race.

Nevermind 19to77’s “he’d make a better basketball player or rapper” comment, are there two things less predominantly black that you could have picked?

At best I think comments like these speak to the positive aversion to character that exists in hockey (both insiders and many of the fans), people don’t like players celebrating goals a certain way or cutting their hair a certain way or .. pretty much anything other than trying to emulate Jonathan Toews.

At worst it suggests latent racism, expressed not particularly subtlely.

At the end of the day Kane is a kid with an elite skill set, living in a city where 99% of people would trade places with him without thinking twice, making money hand over fist.

He’s immature at this point and he expresses himself in ways some people aren’t comfortable with but that’s no reason to judge him.

At least he’s not going around punching cab drivers and choking college girls like a certain other young star..

      • davebabychreturns - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:54 PM

Ugh. If I could edit my original post I would just cut everything about the “he should go play in the NBA” stuff, it’s not worth getting into.

Suffice to say even if Kane’s a complete d-bag, he’s not doing anything that’s hurting anybody and until he does judging him for his actions is pretty harsh.

      • 19to77 - Jan 25, 2013 at 3:07 PM

The music industry is what it is. White rappers act much the same as African-American and latino ones. It’s about fame, not race. And like I said, he’s the one who drew the rap reference by shaving a rap label into his hair. I wouldn’t be thinking of rap if it wasn’t the topic of the article, dude.

      • hockeyflow33 - Jan 26, 2013 at 1:17 AM

Stop putting race into places where it has no place.

      • 19to77 - Jan 26, 2013 at 1:57 AM

My thoughts precisely. Race has no place in any of this. It’s purely a matter of attitude.

  7. loinstache - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:25 PM

Would it be as big a deal (or would he do it in the first place) if he still played in Atlanta, rather than the less than ‘black-friendly’ Winnipeg? Probably just a kid nodding to his influences in a small, white fish-bowl city.

    • jasol20 - Jan 25, 2013 at 3:49 PM

I don’t think this is a race issue in the least, or has anything to do with the racial makeup of where he plays. I chalked up the “cash phone” incident to a young player learning to deal with an ego and the reality of being a professional athlete. Unfortunately, it seems that Kane hasn’t learned, and that this really is the classless and stupid behavior that he exhibits regularly. Professional hockey players as a whole act with dignity, respect, and intelligence. Plain and simple, this isn’t how hockey players behave.

      • loinstache - Jan 25, 2013 at 5:24 PM

Really? Please show me the controversy when a white player gets a mohawk or other ‘trashy’ haircut.

      • jasol20 - Jan 26, 2013 at 12:59 AM

Right, because a player getting a mohawk is the same as “Young Money Cash Money Billionaires” etched in your head… It’s also about the pattern this particular player has exhibited.

  8. thecheeman - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:26 PM

    What are the Winnipeg Jets?

    • comeonnowguys - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:51 PM

The team about to move from Phoenix to Quebec.

      • thailer35 - Jan 25, 2013 at 3:04 PM

Holy trolling batman! An article about Evander Kane’s haircut, and we still have to hear Canadians crying about hockey existing in places they don’t think it should? Unbelievable!

      • tatdue - Jan 25, 2013 at 5:42 PM

@thailer35 – Holy trolling moron! How the hell do you jump from comeonnowguys comment to “and we still have to hear Canadians crying about hockey existing in places they don’t think it should?” How do you know comeonnowguys isn’t American for one and what would you have said if the guy used Seattle instead of Quebec? And above all else you went after an entire country over one persons comment! You are an idiot extraordinaire! Based on your stupid comment would it be fair for me to label all Americans stupid? No it wouldn’t, so you should think before you use generalities like that….

  9. ibieiniid - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:27 PM

take this kind of s— to the NFL please. leave the hockey to guys with some sort of brain in their head.

  10. lammy5555 - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:29 PM

He should have shaved “I’m and idiot”. Would be more truthful.

  11. killacam42 - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:30 PM

He is a black athlete doing something creative with his hair.. see: NBA, NFL..
How does this make him an asshole? He’s just shouting out a record label he likes. It’ll be covered with a helmet, it’s not a face tattoo. Even if it was, who cares? He’s a great hockey player, he works hard and produces, he’s young and he’ll get better. Any team should be happy to have him.
Just because he’s not behaving like a white guy from Sudbury doesn’t make him any less a hockey player

    • ibieiniid - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:33 PM

i think the point is that he looks like an asshole. if you like a record label, put on a t-shirt or something.

    • hockeyflow33 - Jan 26, 2013 at 1:24 AM

      He looks like a clown because;

      1. There’s nothing creative about shaving someone else’s logo into your head. Do something different or at least create your own logo.

      2. He’s not a great hockey player. He’s a young kid with talent, who, if he doesn’t start to understand his position, will be another first round bust.

      3. Anyone who reports back on him specifically states how lazy he is.

      4. He won’t get better if he continues to act like a moron and not work at his craft.

      5. What type of politically-correct racist are you that you feel the need to rely upon the race card to help your argument. Hockey is, and never has been a me first game. Guys who act like that don’t stay in the game for long. That attitude doesn’t fly in beer leagues, let alone when millions of dollars are on the line.

  12. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:30 PM

Good thing he knows how to play hockey, if most people shaved that on their head it would stand for “unemployable.”

  13. darksidecowboy - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:35 PM

Really looks like Kane wants out of Winnipeg, maybe the lack of parks is getting to him?

    • sectualvanilla - Jan 25, 2013 at 7:23 PM

      Or the lack of KFC

    • sal1117 - Jan 26, 2013 at 5:42 PM

Who would’nt want to leave that Minor League city ???

Know several former Atlanta players, they hate the place, and wish they had gotten an OWNER who Cared in Atlanta and were still at The Philips !!!!!!!!

  14. f2maestro - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:46 PM

There’s no denying he has some serious ego/attention issues; However…

I don’t understand why what a player does off the ice (as long as it’s legal) is a concern to some people. As long as he isn’t break the law (IE. drugs, domestic violence, etc…) I honestly don’t see where people have an issue with this. As much as the majority of you won’t admit it, If you had that many zeros in your bank account you might do some things that people would perceive as being off or ‘a–hole-ish’. Point is; This stuff is going to happen; These people are going to show up sooner or later as the NHL grows in popularity.

Deal with it and move on. It’s his life, not yours.

    • ibieiniid - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:48 PM

      watchu mean, “these people?”

lol sorry just stirrin the pot

      • f2maestro - Jan 25, 2013 at 2:51 PM

I should have known someone would go there…

        lol yes you should have.

  22. voltron217 - Jan 25, 2013 at 4:53 PM

Why is everyone tip toeing around race? T o be politically correct? Screw that have some balls. hockey has had far fewer degenerates in its entire existence than the nba and nfl has in one year. That behavior is why our kids are growing up less intelligent. Because we are afraid to call black people on it because they’ll claim we’re racist. So we turn the other cheek then our kids start implementing fake words for real ones like ballin, cray, because its cool then we as parents correct them then we’re racist! It’s not about race it’s about the black urban culture bottom line and yes it has had a negative impact on america. He looks like a deuche in both photos and is a marginal player.

    • hockeyflow33 - Jan 26, 2013 at 1:29 AM

I’m not really sure how you hold the actions of a few people against an entire race of people.

Also, saying that all types of a certain race do ____ is in itself, a racist statement. It doesn’t necessarily mean the statement is negative or positive, just that that it is made based upon race. When claiming that people are becoming less intelligent, you may want to attempt proper grammar, sentence structure, etc.

  23. dannythebisforbeast - Jan 26, 2013 at 1:20 AM

Scroll 3 articles over and look at Dipietro. Looks like a damn hippie….damn hippies.

Evander Kane…is he named after a movie character? Sure sounds like one.

Stop pissing with your haircut, shut up and play hockey. He might just become the Dennis Rhodman of hockey.

  26. bigdawg1954 - Jan 26, 2013 at 4:54 PM

A lot of ways some people express themselves may seem dumb or stupid to others ….. Think about it – rings or studs in various body parts, tattoos – which could last a lifetime, with dated expressions; different Color hairstyles, etc. As hockey continues to appeal across the cross-section of the populace, we’d better be prepared for even more outrageous expressions. Hell, even Nail Yakopov’s expression was greeted with astonishment in some circles. Wake up Canada!!! Hockey is not small time, anymore. I know this may shock some of you, but this is no longer the Original Six era, so leave your club in your cave and enter the 21st century.

  27. dsharpe8 - Jan 27, 2013 at 7:18 PM

And I bet most of the people knocking this kid are white. He’s trying to do something in a sport where we as black people don’t care for… It just so happens I’m a sports fan and I follow hockey a little, Go Blackhawks. And by the way, it Young Money Cash Money Brothers… A la New Jack City

  28. nuckss - Jan 28, 2013 at 5:10 PM
