agreed, unless oates wants to use this season as a training camp and ownership is ok with them just throwing it away with the hope of a good full season next year. dont agree with it if thats the case, this season is a sprint…he needs to just cut the boys loose and coach them as they go this year. let them play pond hockey and see what happens.

I’m glad I haven’t been able to see any of the games here in Denver because following along on Twitter has been ugly enough.

I get that it’s a new coach and new system and with basically no training camp it’ll take a while to get things going. But it’s also a compressed season and they haven’t even been competitive in the first three games. If they start something like 4-10 or 5-12 it’s going to be really difficult to even make the playoffs.

I’m starting to think that they should have stuck with what worked last year and saved the new system for a full training camp.

dont know…oates seems to want to really shake it up. changing your best player’s natural position, jostling your should be young starting goalie’s confidence by publicly saying he doesnt have the job, and dictating player equipment? karl alzner did a pregame interview the other day where he said oates is even changing their sticks…talk about micromanaging. the hurricanes, lightning have gotten better on paper – caps look worse on paper to me and in the games.

It’s a troubling start, for sure, but unsurprising, given a new coach, new system, several new players, and zero offseason in which to gel these disparate parts. If the Caps are still losing big and losing often 10-12 games in, then I’ll start panicking. Until then, it’s just growing pains. And hey – the Kings aren’t exactly tearing it up this year, and they absolutely WRECKED everybody last year in the playoffs. Lockouts hurt teams play as well as players.

I’m really surprised at how poorly the Caps have played under Oates. They have all the ingredients to be a contender it’s just not coming together. I feel the pain of Washington fans, although I have to admit I don’t necessarily mind their struggles because it takes focus off the Flyers problems. Especially on PHT. The Caps will get it together eventually, too much talent not to and their division is winnable.

The Caps played a better 1st period last night, but continue to derail themselves with a penalties and a lack luster PK. They continue to be underwhelming on the PP as well.have a man-advantage. Brouwer was right by saying it a work ethic and mental error issues, not a system or talent issue. I love Ovi as much as the next Caps fan, but they need to pull the “C” off his chest b/c he is not performing or acting like a Captain. Give the “C” to Laich and make Hendricks and Brouwer alternates. These are the “Glue” guys that make this team go.

ovechkin looks lost, neither goalie looks comfortable, none of the lines look like they know where each other is at at any given time, alzner and carlson are dreadful for some reason, and mike green needs a haircut.

Nobody is getting in front of the net so all these one timers they do have no shot of going in when the goalie isn’t screened

I’d like to point to some problem, but it’s everything.

PK is terrible (56% is worse than terrible). Those two goals to start the second were bad news, killed them. Defense has been unimpressive in general, including even strength.

Also, shots were 20-20 after two periods, but the score was 4-0. So that’s both the goalie/defense giving up a lot of goals, and the offense not scoring.

It really is everything.

Pathetic is about right. I of course havent seen all the other teams, but id be willing to bet the Capitals look to be the worst team in hockey right now. It makes sense, the Redskins and Nationals are both doing well. The sports Gods only allow 2 washington area sports teams to be good at the same time so its balancing out unfortunately…
