Alberta premier: no lottery money to build Oilers arena

Edmonton Arena design

Alberta’s premier, Alison Redford, says the construction of a new $480-million downtown Edmonton arena won’t be funded by lottery proceeds.

Per the Canadian Press, if the city needs $107 million in provincial money to build a new home for the Oilers, Redford says it can dip into the Municipal Sustainability Initiative grant.

On Wednesday, city officials approved a new plan to build a downtown arena by 2016.

The idea to use lottery money was floated earlier this month by Aberta’s opposition party.
