Getty Images It looked like a typical Philadelphia Flyers game – there were fights, there was animosity and the Flyers came away victorious.
The Flyers defeated the visiting New York Rangers 2-1 Thursday night, but fans also witnessed a spirited back-and-forth exchange of fisticuffs between Philadelphia’s Tye McGinn and New York’s Kris Newbury in the second period.
For the 22-year-old McGinn, Thursday’s game marked just the second of his NHL career.
Flyers winger Wayne Simmonds opened the scoring less than three minutes before the fight, and Jakub Voracek put Philadelphia up a pair of goals 1:10 after the scrap.
Taylor Pyatt scored the lone goal of the night for the Rangers, who are 1-3 to the begin the season.
Rangers head coach John Tortorella also called out his top line of Rick Nash, Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik. The latter notched the only point of the night among those three players.
For the Flyers, the wins comes hours of GM Paul Holmgren confirmed Scott Hartnell will be out four to six weeks with a broken foot.
The Flyers, as a result, will sign free agent Mike Knuble tomorrow, CSNPhilly.com confirmed.
