It looked like a typical Philadelphia Flyers game – there were fights, there was animosity and the Flyers came away victorious.

The Flyers defeated the visiting New York Rangers 2-1 Thursday night, but fans also witnessed a spirited back-and-forth exchange of fisticuffs between Philadelphia’s Tye McGinn and New York’s Kris Newbury in the second period.

For the 22-year-old McGinn, Thursday’s game marked just the second of his NHL career.

Flyers winger Wayne Simmonds opened the scoring less than three minutes before the fight, and Jakub Voracek put Philadelphia up a pair of goals 1:10 after the scrap.

Taylor Pyatt scored the lone goal of the night for the Rangers, who are 1-3 to the begin the season.

Rangers head coach John Tortorella also called out his top line of Rick Nash, Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik. The latter notched the only point of the night among those three players.

For the Flyers, the wins comes hours of GM Paul Holmgren confirmed Scott Hartnell will be out four to six weeks with a broken foot.

The Flyers, as a result, will sign free agent Mike Knuble tomorrow, confirmed.

When you make the decision to drop the gloves and enter the field of honor wearing a shield makes it
      a lot less honorable !

unless the other guy starts the fight by hitting you when you’re not looking, in which case you have no time to take off your helmet. That was the case here.

Have to agree with matt. It’s one thing to square up and leave your helmet on, but there was no opportunity here with them being tied up from the get-go.

I remember Newbury when he played for the Leafs. Glad to see he’s still such a tough little motherf***er.

    • irishphilly87 - Jan 25, 2013 at 9:35 AM

He got his ass kicked. McGinn kept whaling him over and over. He is tough though.

Yeah, I never said he won the fight, but he has to be the smallest guy on the ice yet he’s willing to drop the gloves against anyone.

Newbury looked hungry for the taste of human flesh to me. Should have been wearing the McGregor (punching bag) monikor.

That is a decent and valid point about the shield. I noticed it too. However, the way the fight broke out, it wasn’t his fault. He had no opportunity to remove his helmet.

Additionally, if you WHIP the other guy’s ass, well, it doesn’t matter what you have on your head now does it?

I dont get this rule, Newbury received 2 mins for that new rule for touching the shield, that led to a flyers goal. I was under the impression you get 2 mins for fighting with a helmet on that has a shield, did they get away from that rule? Shouldnt the penalties be a wash?

Also, i just watched the fight again and was baffled by the announcers. While watching, i thought ” this has to be a flyers telecast” low and behold it was. You’d think newbury was knocked out 4 times. They also didnt show the first part of the fight where newbury dropped some bombs.
I dont care for guys fighting with a half shield on, should remove that or shake it off during the fight.

    • mattdaddy7 - Jan 25, 2013 at 9:22 AM

First off, I was at the game, and saw the first part where Newbury sucker-punched McGinn, the whole reason the fight started. Newbury did not drop any bombs after that and got his @ss kicked. As for the half shield, McGinn did not have time to remove it because of the sucker punch. Sorry, but if someone punches me in the face when I’m not looking, I am not taking the time to remove my helmet before I beat the sh!t out of you.

Maybe you would prefer the MSG broadcast, where the only commenting is “oh, boy” followed by stunned silence for the rest of the fight.

Yes, in the grand tradition of Flyers-Rangers fisticuffs. It seems like it was only yesterday when . . . .

Wow McGinn beat the chocolate out of newbury, give him credit for hanging in there and not being a little b**** about it
