Hartnell out 4-8 weeks with broken foot

Flyers forward Scott Hartnell will be out at least a month, and possibly two, with a broken foot. (A broken left metatarsal, to be specific.)

That’s the word from Philadelphia GM Paul Holmgren, per CSNPhilly.com.

Hartnell suffered the injury during the third period of Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to the Devils when he was hit in the foot by a shot from teammate Kimmo Timonen (video).

The news that the Flyers had lost their top goal-scorer from last season would be bad enough if they weren’t struggling to put the puck in the net. But Philadelphia has just three goals in its first three games, all losses, making Hartnell’s loss even more of a concern.

“Scott’s a big loss because of how he plays the game,” Holmgren said, per NHL.com. “To have him out any length of time is difficult. If you’re looking at a month to two months, it’s a tough pill to swallow. But we’ll see what we can do.”

On the bright side, forward Danny Briere (wrist) could be back by the weekend, with Holmgren putting the chances at 50/50.
