Scott Hartnell sidelined indefinitely

Scott Hartnell‘s spirited play has been one of the few bright spots of the Philadelphia Flyers’ tough start, but word surfaced from on Wednesday that he’ll be out indefinitely because of an injured left foot.

The injury occurred during the third period of Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to the New Jersey Devils as teammate Kimmo Timonen‘s point shot caught Hartnell in the foot. Flyers GM Paul Holmgren gave this update:

“Scott will be out indefinitely with a left foot injury,” Holmgren said in a statement. “We will know more on this within a day or two as we await results of tests.”

The already-struggling Flyers could really use the 30-year-old super-pest considering the circumstances.

21-year-old forward Brayden Schenn received a one-game suspension for charging on Wednesday, meaning he won’t be available for a divisional match against the New York Rangers on Thursday.

While Danny Briere reportedly practiced today, it seems that he isn’t ready to go and might not be until Tuesday, Jan. 29. The 35-year-old scorer admitted that he feels helpless watching his team go shorthanded, yet he also provides this post’s slim silver lining:

“It’s tough to watch when you are feeling helpless and want to get back on the ice,” Briere said. “It’s disappointing and frustrating but I’m not too far away.”

The Flyers hope that Hartnell won’t be down for too long, either.

Well it can’t get much worse, right?

      It can always get worse

    • bcsteele - Jan 23, 2013 at 7:20 PM

      Blues fan here…love great rivalries…

…but you’re pathetic wishing that on anyone.

      • orpiksdeadeyes - Jan 23, 2013 at 7:47 PM

you can’t wish something that already happened. thats like wishing Crosby would become the best player in the world. too late.

      • bcsteele - Jan 23, 2013 at 7:57 PM

Until Crosby gets that injury your friend is wishing on others. Considering his injury his days could be numbered. Appreciate for as long as it last. As much as I can’t stand the Red Wings as my rival I wouldn’t wish that for anyone…

        Grow up, or get out.

      • xflyersx - Jan 23, 2013 at 10:40 PM

These tough guy high school morons are just classless. Act like you were raised by parents who loved you! Oh wait..

  5. mafmvp - Jan 23, 2013 at 7:17 PM

Real shame seeing this happen to such a stand up guy. A guy who never targets guys heads from behind, a guy who never bites opponents. I gotta feeling he’s faking it so he can keep an eye on his girlfriend when Jeff Carter visits town

    • thesportsguru7 - Jan 23, 2013 at 7:39 PM

Can you blame him, Sheena Parveen is smoking hot!

  6. jpat2424 - Jan 23, 2013 at 7:19 PM

    Cryin shame

  7. kingjoe1 - Jan 23, 2013 at 7:31 PM

Well this will help the rest of the team to learn to pull their weight. The team has been standing around waiting Girioux and Hartnall to carry them. Now maybe Couturie, Read and Simmons can man up. Guess this also means Laughton will stay with the big club and not go back to QMJHL.

    • hockeywithdrawal - Jan 23, 2013 at 8:46 PM

Hartnell’s been carrying the club? That must be why their 0-3.

  10. broadstbully33 - Jan 23, 2013 at 7:39 PM

Simmond has been one of the best players by far…

    • steelpenbucs87 - Jan 24, 2013 at 9:38 AM

He’s played well – but I still think he’s a complimentary piece from an offensive perspective. Couple Flyguy fans who are buddies of mine believe Simmonds is in the mold of Hartnell but I don’t know that he’s a 30 goal scorer (I know that sounds kind of harsh given his age/tallies last year, but call it a hunch).

Giroux is Giroux, and I’m sure you’re praying Briere picks up where he left off from the playoffs, but I think you guys need to add a piece on the wing if Hartnell is going to be out more than a month with this foot injury.

    • valoisvipers - Jan 24, 2013 at 6:46 PM

If Simmonds could only finish, he sure has missed a few great chances in the last 3 games.

  11. billsin20xx - Jan 23, 2013 at 7:47 PM

This might help them out in that they won’t be killing off so many stupid penalties he takes!

  12. ml3939 - Jan 23, 2013 at 7:53 PM

I think Laughton was here to stay anyway. He has been one of their better players to this point, though that is not saying much.

    • hockeywithdrawal - Jan 23, 2013 at 8:48 PM

He has been good – and he’s played a much cleaner style of hockey than the rest of the club. I hope he continues to do well.

  13. steelers88 - Jan 23, 2013 at 8:00 PM

Never want to see a player go down. This really hurts Philly bad they weren’t scoring goals as it is and now they lose someone who scored 30+ goals last year.

  14. phillyphanatic77 - Jan 23, 2013 at 8:01 PM

    Bad to worse…

  15. gregman98 - Jan 23, 2013 at 8:02 PM

I am ABSOLUTELY GIDDY with the misfortune piling up on the Philly Failers!

The hole keeps getting deeper daily!

Hello down there (in the standings)…echo…echo…echo

    • mgdsquiggy17 - Jan 24, 2013 at 9:56 AM

LMAO it’s 3 games into the season

  16. hockeyfan28 - Jan 23, 2013 at 8:43 PM

No one is going to feel sorry for these guys Jake Voracek and Matt Read gotta step up
they can turn this thing around

  17. gbar22 - Jan 23, 2013 at 8:52 PM

I love fans making reference to the standings after only 2-3 games played for every team. Makes sense when your 0-3 and you have a 16 game season makes very little sense when you play 48 games. I’m sure none of the other teams will go on 2-3 game losing streaks at all this year. Then again fans now rush basketball courts after a regular season win on a Monday night so I guess hoping for any semblance of intelligence and reason amongst this what have you done lately crowd is futile.

fartsmell is probably out with with a lower jaw injury from claudias ball bag smashing against it

    • mp1131211 - Jan 23, 2013 at 9:13 PM

You just can’t post anything worth reading, can you?

    • andrewsabourin13 - Jan 23, 2013 at 10:06 PM

hahahaha Fartsmell, classic, and I liked the way you worked in ball bag. Bravo @87eatsyourmom

Wish I could say i feel bad, but I don’t. So far this season is awesome.

  20. uscthom78 - Jan 23, 2013 at 10:12 PM

    Hartnell DOWN indefinitely.

  21. jimw81 - Jan 23, 2013 at 10:32 PM

flyers making a trade went from 65% to 95%

    • jimw81 - Jan 23, 2013 at 10:41 PM

flyers make a panic move if they lose to rangers. book it.

  22. orangeandblack67 - Jan 23, 2013 at 10:37 PM

People talk about our lack of class yet they applaud injuries. I would like to go back and read their responses to any comments putting praise on Crosby’s concussions. Total hypocrites.

    • jimw81 - Jan 23, 2013 at 10:40 PM

it’s Pittsburgh, what do you expect?

      • whatthepuck2012 - Jan 24, 2013 at 3:19 PM

We’re not all like that. As glad as I am that we don’t have to see Hartnell (can we stop with the childish name games?) for a while, I don’t wish injury on any player. Hope it’s not serious, but I suggest he rests it a loooooooooooooooong time to be safe. 😀

  23. flyeredup - Jan 23, 2013 at 10:41 PM

This kills us! It is time to trade for Luongo. Couturier and Schenn for Bieksa and Lu

  24. phillyphannn83 - Jan 24, 2013 at 2:35 AM

    can’t catch a brreak

  25. 87eatsyourmom - Jan 24, 2013 at 7:13 AM

can the flygirls pull it off and go 0-4 without irrelevant schenn and ginger sack fartsmell?? i think they they can!! keep up the great season philthy u deserve it.

  26. bradkaz96 - Jan 24, 2013 at 1:00 PM

    Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy…

  27. steelers88 - Jan 24, 2013 at 4:14 PM

Some Penguins fans are real jerks. You should never hope that someone has a career ending injury. Pens fans should know more than anyone with Crosby being out the past two years with a concussion. Hey 87eatsyourmom either growup or shutup!
