It’s nice to see plenty of rational thoughts on the otherside. I’ve been getting sick of the nonstop rhetoric going back and forth on Flyers and Pens pages. In moderation it’s great but when you just wanna have a hockey conversation it gets obnoxious. Anyway having only seen highlights of the game I’ll take your word that the officiating was horrendous. I think we can all agree that, although it’s early, the refs haven’t been up to snuff. I guess technically it’s still like the Preseason for them too, but I’ve seen more missed/bad calls so far than I can ever remember in the 1st 3 games of a season. Like the Schenn hit on Volchenkov, totally illegal, but refs were looking right at it and didn’t make a call. And it turns out to be a suspendable play. Here’s hoping they’re having some meetings to get all this figured out- what does and doesn’t constitute a penalty. Since they don’t seem to know, or atleast the definition keeps changing.

I don’t know what fight you were watching 87eatsithard but by the looks of England’s face he came up on the short end of that fight. Colton Orr is 2 for 2 in heavy weight tilts so far this year. Maybe try watching the fight a few times. You might figure it out !!!

Yea if you watched the game like you say then you would know in both cases the maple leaf player put themselves in a vulnerable position and the one on kunitz was not a boarding call in my opinionit. Thats not dirty thats hockey. Leaving you feet to accomplish a head hit ( brayden schenn) thats dirty. Move along troll, move along.

The negative side of Crosby was on full display late in last night’s game. He was frustrated, and when he gets that way he starts either crying to the officials, getting into stupid spats with opposing players, or both. That’s the book on this guy now – phenomenal talent when he is focused, but if you can get under his skin his effectiveness falls of significantly.

I watched the game. I watched put get out worked and outplayed. I saw pit play dirt and ang get 2 boarding calls. I saw Cindy in the penalty box at the end of the game, I saw Toronto score while Cindy was in the box, I also saw the game misconduct. Poor Lemieux he and Crosby probably cuddled and cried last night over the clean game they say they want but yet continue to prove they play the dirtiest in the league.

Admittedly I am not as familiar with the Toronto goaltender situation as the Leaf fans are but I was pretty impressed with Reimer last night. He plays a little bit far back in his crease for my liking, but he seems to have the lateral quickness and flexibility to make up for it. Giving up two goals to the Pens (including one on a breakaway) isn’t too shabby.

Although the defense played really well in front of him too – something about the Leafs just troubles the Pens over the last few years. Don’t want to see them in a 1-8 or 2-7 matchup this year.

1) The boarding call on Kunitz was bad (it was basically the same hit Tootoo put on that Star two days ago), the one on Letang was questionable. Neither was dirty, or particularly hard.
2) Giroux has also gotten a couple of unsportsmanlike calls himself so far this year – Captains are the vocal leaders of their teams and that includes to the Refs and therefore they will take unsportsmanlike penalties – casualty of the position.

I will admit that the Pens and Flyers fans are quick to label the other team’s players cheap, dirty, goons, whiney, etc. but the fact of the matter is you did the exact same thing on multiple posts above and in that regard you lose any and all credibility – especially considering its obvious you didn’t watch the game.

Maybe the Leafs aren’t that bad? They played Buffalo really well in their only loss. On paper they aren’t good, but they look really well coached right now.

The refs were calling boarding in a way I’ve never really seen it – instead of just taking a look at the box score, if you’re going to comment you should watch the game. The calls weren’t based on dangerous hits, and there may have been a little bit of elaboration on both sides of the puck once the boys saw that the refs were looking to blow their whistles. The game misconduct wasn’t dirty, either…was directed toward the ref…not even sure what that was about.

It was a good, clean game (even the fight) and Toronto played harder than the Pens. They deserved the win – but both sides played with respect. That’s the difference between men and boys.

I had the misfortune of being at the game. We certainly didn’t deserve to win…got outplayed in pretty much every aspect. We couldn’t complete a pas if our lives depended on it. But those “boarding” calls? I’m not blaming the refs for our loss, because we killed many of those penalties (and I’m not a Flyers fan), but sometimes you start thinking “What…we can’t CHECK anymore??”
Sloppy, sloppy play. Thanks for the sucky opening night, Pens.

My original comment was directed towards the fact that when the penguins commit multiple dirty penalties I.E. boarding their fans scream “bad call” and when Crosby receives unsportsmanlike conduct for arguing a call it’s some how justified but if the Flyers do the same they are considered filthy goons and having a whining mentality. It just seems to have Homer written all over it. And I don’t mean Simpson.

Well for starters bms I don’t think you understand the rules very well. Too many men on the ice does not lead to misconduct penalties; it’s a bench minor. Also boarding and hitting from behind are two separate penalties (see rule 41.1). It just sounds like you are pretty quick to make excuses.

@phillyphanatic- I watched most of that game and thought at least one of those goals should have stood. I’m not responsible for what other Pens fans say. I don’t generally call out officiating – but when it is truly negligent, it deserves to be. Flyers fans had a legitimate gripe against Buffalo, and the Pens deserved to be angry tonight. The too-many-men call at the end of the game was apparently called by the official on the far end of the ice, while the official near the bench said it was good: hence the misconducts, etc.

Again phillyphantic your right. The calls were no excuse. Pens just flat out lost. Refereeing goes both ways a lot in hockey. Some days the calls go your way sometimes they don’t. You still have to play the hand your dealt and execute. Tonight we didn’t, so hat tip to a good hard skating leafs team.

So wait… it’s now perfectly reasonable that we Flyers fans complained about having two goals waved off b/c the Pens had a poorly officiated game? Pens fans trolled up and down Flyers pages basking in our misery and instigating countless arguments. We were “whiners” and “Cryers” and sore losers (and much worse) but now because you know what it’s like to get hosed by horrible referees you’re freely admitting that the game was poorly officiated? Look I didn’t get the Pens game on tv here so idk how bad the calls were, I’m not doubting they were terrible, but can you guys atleast admit there’s a double standard here? I’m sure no one will, and I’ll get a ton of thumbs down, but I’d say it’s atleast a tiny bit hypocritical.

BS. Letang’s boarding barely qualified as a hit; it was more a bump. And Kunitz – the dude wasn’t even facing the boards. They were beyond weak calls. And that isn’t even to mention at least three blatant tripping calls that the officials refused to call against the Leafs, as well as a really questionable too many men (which is what the misconducts are about).

The Pens deserved to lose, but the officiating was inexcusable and made the game unwatchable.

I think the refs are pissed about missing pay days from the lock out and are taking it out anytime a player looks at them the wrong way. Or they might have studied the rule book while they were off. Those boarding calls are the correct calls. It’s just that they never (ok usually) called them before. Vincent Lecavlier had a similar hit to Kuntiz’s 2nd boarding call against the Capitals a day or 2 ago and now that player is out injuried. No penalty was called and i wouldn’t be shocked if a memo went out to the refs. Now if they keep calling it that way throughout the the SCF I don’t have a problem with it and players will adjust. But if they pick and choose when they will enforce the penalties that’s when everyone will have a problem with it.
