Update: Lupul fractures forearm against Penguins

The Toronto Maple Leafs are hanging in there so far against the Penguins in Pittsburgh, but Wednesday’s game could be costly. Joffrey Lupul got banged up during that contest, and various sources report that he won’t return.

Lupul took a Dion Phaneuf shot to the hand and also received a slash from Brooks Orpik during the same sequence, so the vague upper-body description seems more appropriate than usual.

Update: TSN reports that Lupul fractured his forearm. No word on the typical recovery time for such an ailment, but that doesn’t sound very promising.

Losing Phil Kessel‘s partner-in-crime is worrisome enough, yet it must be that much more unsettling to see Lupul get banged up after signing a whopping five-year, $26.25 million contract extension on Sunday. He’s had a history of injury problems – Lupul was limited to 66 games last season – so it’s not like this came out of nowhere.

Again, though, there’s no word about the severity of the problem(s) just yet.

Hey, at least the Leafs are leading the Penguins 4-2 at the moment, right?

If I got hit by a Phaneuf slapshot my arm would probably fall off. Lupul is tough, hope he’s not gone for too long.

Solid game by the Leafs. Reimer looked good, no real signs of rust after that first goal. With any luck JVR’s performance is a sign of things to come.

Brutal. Anybody know on average how long a guy with a fractured forearm sits out?

      • misterchainbluelightning - Jan 23, 2013 at 10:34 PM

        4-6 weeks

Gronkowski came back after breaking his and re-broke it at the base of the metal plate they inserted.

With the amount of wrist use in hockey I’d imagine the rehab would be fairly lengthy too

Lets be honest here, Reimer is not going to carry the leafs is he! Kessel is not the type of player to lead a team to the playoffs/finals, is he! Lupus is not out for at least 4 weeks, isn’t he. Phaneuf is totally overrated isn’t he!

Face it! The leafs will not make the playoffs without a complete makeover!

Got to give credit where credit is due Leafs played a hell of a game.
