1. No goalie will ever again have the advantage of playing behind a team using the trap the way the Devils use to. I know Devils fans hate it when the obvious is pointed out when it comes to Marty, but for a lot of years there Brodeur could have been asleep in the net most nights. He was in his prime right in the heart of the “Dead puck era”, and the Devils were the poster child for that era. If you don’t think that has a whole lot to do with his shutout number, you are ignoring reality.

2. Very few goalies are allowed to play as many games as Brodeur. Hes has TWELEVE seasons in which hes played more then 70 games. All told hes played in 1192… thats good enough to give him the record for most games played by an NHL goalie, by a wide margin. In fact only one other goalie has ever played more then 1000 games, and only six have played more then 900. Its simple math…. the more games you play, the more chances for a shutout. With a lot of teams now taking the approach of resting their goalies for the playoffs it makes this record that much harder to break.

3. The NHL wants to see scoring records broken, not goaltending records. Thus it stands to reason the rules will be changed over the years to make it easier and easier to score, and thus harder to amass shutouts.

Needless to say, his shutout record is unlikely to be going anywhere any time soon.
