Not really. He hasn’t complained at all and has acted quite professional for being so young. It sounds as if this was all being done behind closed doors which is the correct way to go about our business.

His agent went through the appropriate channels and asked for a trade. The kid hasn’t come out publicly or said anything other than the right thing.
If he hates it there and thinks his career is suffering, what else should he do?

As several people have noted elsewhere, a lot of kids are being sent back to juniors or the AHL who might’ve at least been given 9 games with the big club in an 82 game schedule season. There was certainly an argument for Strome getting the 5 games allowed but he went back to Niagara and didn’t complain. The Isles are sticking with veterans and IMHO its the right move. Nino should shut up, play and wait for his chance. This nonsense is hurting his stock both with the Isles and with any other team he might want to play for in the future.

It wouldn’t affect players coming out of the NCAA . The NCAA has a rule in place that if you sign a pro contract, you’re no longer eligible to play at the college level .

Top 6 would be Tavares, Moulson, Okposo, Grabner, Frans & Boyes + Bailey when healthy. If he’s not getting top 6 ice time he’s better off in the AHL. There really wasn’t a camp this year so it’s tough to whine about this year.
You don’t want him wasting time on the 4th line again or on a checking line against a top unit.
If there was a real camp this year I think he’d have gotten a shot. But complaining about it when you’re 20 is kind of ridiculous.

That ‘technicality’ was he wasn’t 20. You have to be age 20 to play in the AHL. A good rule i’m guessing that NCAA and Major Juniors is the reason for the rule, almost all prospects would probably be in the AHL after being drafted rather than growing up in the NCAA and Major Juniors. So its better overall for hockey.

My only problem with him being in the AHL is the fact that who exactly is better than him or has more upside on the current 2nd and 3rd lines? Not an Islanders fan so really don’t much about who is on the 2nd and 3rd lines. I mean maybe they will have a decent year and make the playoffs (but I doubt it) and the kid is putting up some pretty sick numbers in the AHL, how is it that he’s not viewed on a possible asset to the big club?

He’s 20! lol holy crap, we might be better off trading him at this point to avoid future headaches.
if he’s not going to get top 6 ice time he needs to be in the ahl. The only reason he wasn’t there last year was because of a technicality (he wasn’t eligible for some weird reason I can’t recall at the moment).
Yes he had no production, but on the 4th line he had no help. That said, he didn’t impress.

Travis Hamonic would be a good role model for Nino. His philosophy? Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut Earn the right to talk. Nino hasn’t yet. Garth is doing the right thing by not trading him, but, if he did, Nino would almost certainly stay in the AHL. He needs another year there. No doubt he’ll get a callup or two and maybe he’ll stick. This kind of petulance doesn’t help his career whether he stays on the Island or goes elsewhere.

kind of reminiscent of the turris situation. sometimes all it takes is a new system to really fit into a mold and expand as a player. if he feels that this is his ticket to really flourish, then there should be no harm in that decision.

but be wary nino, if you do get moved, be ready for disappointment if it doesn’t end up panning out as third chances are rarely given…

I guarantee some other team is willing to give this guy a chance. I would. He has got skill, yet even when the Islanders are losing, they REFUSE to start him which boggles my mind. Please trade him. Put a Penguin sweater over his head and let him play next to Geno instead of Tangradi who has still been ineffective. Seriously, I do not blame him and right now the market for him should be pretty high.

I agree that his poor production last year was in part to do with playing minimal minutes on the 4th line, but he managed ONE point in 55 games. He didn’t do anything to get promoted.

He needs the year to develop in the NHL to get his confidence back, and hey look! It’s working! Acting like he’s been wasting away in the system is asinine. I wanted him up this year too, but saying that he’s being wasted by the Islanders shows that you have no idea what you are talking about.

Well, yeah, the guy kind of wants to play in the NHL sometime before hitting 30. He’s being completely wasted by the Islanders. Yeah, he had trouble producing as a rookie on the fourth line – so put him in the top six and watch how much better he is with actual skill players, don’t just sit him all the time and guarantee he doesn’t get any NHL development.
