that’s not true, they got rid of Thornton because he didn’t perform in crunch time. Managment decided to “build the team around Bergeron”, and by getting rid of him, they cleared cap space to sign Chara and Savard. Great decisions, won them a cup! but unfortunetly Savard’s career ended early. I’m not sure what Ray Bourque or Cam Neely have to do with Joe Thorton choking in (Neely stopped playing in 96, Bourque in 2001 with the Av’s. But I do agree with the Sinden comment, and if you are implying they wasted Bourque and Neely’s careers.

They got rid of Thornton because the management had no clue what they were doing. The failings of the B’s during that time was no more Thornton’s fault than it was Bourque’s or Neely’s.
Suspect goaltending and lack of depth un front and on D cost them every year that Sinden refused to get that last piece or two.

and to think people felt bad for him, he got PAID to leave a habs franchise in shambles, to a yearly cup contender (here’s looking at you Joe Thornton and Niemi, more so big Joe…). Now he’s getting paid again to play on a solid team.

Makes sense since he’s low risk & they’ll be getting a good deal for him (wouldn’t sign him for over a mil though), still I think I’d prefer Zus’ on the 3d line. If anything they’ll probably get a little bump in jersey sales here in San Jose.
