I understand your point that the penalty is merited based partly on the severity of the impact. The point I was I making is that the rule uses the term “defenseless” a number of times to which a shoulder to shoulder hit is much less reckless then the typical hit from behind. I just think it is a call that can go either way though I hate to see a player go down; seems like there have been a litany of injuries in a season only a few days old.

I agree it was shoulder to shoulder. But that has nothing to do with boarding. Look up NHL rule 41.1.

Wasnt dirty, but definately was a penalty. It cost the Caps too. Hillen looked like the only decent defenseman before he was forced from the game.

I don’t think it was a dirty hit, but that looks like the text book definition of a boarding penalty.
