Today’s Isles-Lightning game featured dueling opening-faceoff fights

Jan 21, 2013, 3:36 PM EDT

It didn’t take long for the gloves to drop in today’s matinee between the Islanders and Lightning on Long Island.

If you don’t like staged fights, you probably didn’t like that.

Nor would you have liked the way yesterday’s Penguins-Rangers game kicked off when Arron Asham and Tanner Glass went at it.

Of course, neither of those matched this Rangers-Devils opening faceoff last year.

Based on the crowd’s reaction to all three incidents, fighting still has its proponents.

Count me as one of those fisticuffs proponents. The game is a lot more intersesting with a donnybrook every now and then, especially at the opening face off.

Not sure exactly what prompted the fight, but it’s clear that the Lightning knew it was coming. Generally, Labrie and Crombeen aren’t exactly likely guys to start the game. It’s pretty clear that it was planned before the puck dropped, the only question is by whom and why. Ultimately it didn’t lead to a dirty game at all though, so no big deal.

Yeah no big deal but what is the point of some forth liners scraping it out at the very beginning of the game.
