It doesn’t allow for much healing time as the schedule is so condensed and of course about 40% of the season has been lopped off. But I’ll tell you Philadelphia is an extremely talented team they’ve got scoring completely up-and-down their lineup and every line is dangerous. It’s just taking a little time to fight through injuries and getting the chemistry back to where it needs to be. I just hope the Hawks aren’t playing them when they get their act together at least until the playoffs that is. Both teams have such a huge following and tradition in their own right and it would be a travesty if Philadelphia didn’t make the playoffs this year. And for what it’s worth when there’s no competition between the teams I’ll root for Philadelphia.

I’d take Giroux off the PK just because it’s clear he’s not in mid-season shape and they need to preserve his legs. It’s not based on performance though. The problem with their PK is they’ve been so passive, last year they used a large box where they were constantly on top of the point men and in passing lanes, and that led to shorthanded scoring chances. Right now they’re playing a condensed box, where all four Pkillers are playing way too close to goal line. They’re allowing the point men to skate right into the slot uncontested. I don’t understand why Lavy is having them play that way.

I would also move Voracek back up to the first line with Giroux & Hartnell. That line had great chemistry all last season. I would also emphasize putting a big body in front of the net when they’re in the offensive zone. They’re giving the opposing goalies too many clear looks at the puck.
As far as killing power plays? I HATE the system they employ. They set up in a square formation & remain in their positions while try to poke check the puck away in the passing lanes. What they should be doing is being aggressive as hell, like the Devils & Rangers, and chasing after the puck carrier like he owes them money. They’re wayyy too laid back on the penalty kill & it’s something that did them in at the end of the playoffs last year.

Asham’s shot to Schenn was deserved, but not intentionally in the throat. It was Schenn that was called two seconds before that for an illegal hit, correct? Yes.

Neal’s shift where he went after “couts” and Giroux both is a prime example of what happens when subjected to too much Cryer BS…good men go bad and start taking heads. Actually, the entire series the Pens were taking heads. Which is why they took a page from New Jersey and didn’t let all of the dirty Cryer BS get to them this time. I’m sure there was more than one person on the ice that would have liked to take another shot at Schenn’s throat when he was called for his dirty cross-check, I’m sure they were upset at Giroux’s slewfoot, etc….but they just played hockey this time around. As did Buffalo. In short, I foresee the league being very hard on the Cryers this year (the way Buffalo was), and many Cryer injuries. Go home, goon.

They’re probably a playoff team, and they might win a round, but that’s about as far as they go. The only reason they won a round last year is because they ran into the one goalie (Fleury) who played worse than Universe in the playoffs. And he only played worse because he played too much during the regular season, which won’t be a problem this year with Vokoun in the fold.

It will take them a few years (or more) to recover from (A) the whiffing (again) on the goalie search and (B) the loss of Pronger. You can’t just take a defensman like Pronger out of the lineup and not have it affect the whole team.
