Tampa Bay’s new scoreboard is Dallas Cowboys-sized

Jan 19, 2013, 12:06 PM EDT

The Tampa Bay Lightning are breaking out some new hardware at Tampa Bay Times Forum in the form of a scoreboard roughly the size of the ice surface.

Just look at the size of this monstrous piece of technology courtesy of Washington Capitals radio play-by-play man (and occasional NBCSN guy) John Walton.

My goodness, it’s glorious. And if it’s not the biggest in the league, I’d like to see which team is going above and beyond the call of duty there. Somewhere Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is either jealous of how it looks or ticked off that another team took his idea.

We need more owners in this league like Tampa’s, or Buffalo’s, who care more about winning then the bottom line.

What does this have to do with winning hockey games?

      • grudenthediva - Jan 20, 2013 at 2:41 AM

It’s really not that difficult. You go from cowboy idiots like Koules and Barrie to Vinik, who a.) will spend on players, b.) will spend to improve the fan experience and c.) will spend out of his own pocket to improve the facilities. You do that, and you not only grow and stabilize the fanbase, but you attract free agents as well. Koules and Barrie were dumping any salary they could. Vinik is committed to win, period.

And now you know the rest of the story.

can’t wait to see this tonight

Vinik has to be one of the best owners in the league

Great. I pay twice as much for tickets so that teams that lose money can build large TVs. Hooray Revenue Sharing!

    • dustinstauffer - Jan 19, 2013 at 12:52 PM

Before you leave comments you might want to do a little research. The building improvements have been done out of the owners pocket. This was the finishing off of the updates he did to the building when he bought it. ZERO to do with revenue sharing. There are plenty of news articles on it out there if you feel like reading up on it.

How about the Caps start launching pucks at it like the Lightning did with our new scoreboard a few years ago?

The lightening owner is also planning on buying a soccer team,
last, i cant wait for that to fall onto the ice.

So, um… did they keep that big, expensive lightning coil too, or is that gone already?

    • dustinstauffer - Jan 19, 2013 at 1:46 PM

No, they are still in place

      • 19to77 - Jan 19, 2013 at 2:00 PM

Ah, cool. Man, the Bolts have a pretty sick arena now!

I’d rather watch the actual game on the ice than be distracted by a giant scoreboard. Does everything we do have to have a screen?

    • drewsylvania - Jan 19, 2013 at 7:55 PM

Any downthumbs are from people who’d rather watch screens.

  9. wgray981 - Jan 19, 2013 at 2:15 PM

Cool but…every game I’ve been to I have had no problem seeing the ice which is unlike football, where sometimes plays happen so quickly you need a big scoreboard. Idk cool though

Prepare to see a whole lot of Ovechkin highlights on that oversized display this evening.

    • grudenthediva - Jan 20, 2013 at 2:50 AM

I’m sure they showed some from last year in pregame because Victor Hedman completely shut that clown down tonight.

Why is Jerry jealous? His is bigger.
Why is Jerry ticked? People copy his business ideas all the time.
I’m sure it’s going to be nice for the fans.

Bankers Life Fieldhouse scoreboard goes from foul line to foul line. Looks to be the same size as the one in Tampa. Surprised the writer didn’t comment on that.

    Tampa’s is 50×28
    Indy’s is 50×21
