Subban's young, has major known discipline issues, not-infrequent defensive lapses from trying to make a big, exciting offensive move and losing the puck instead, and on top of that even when he IS completely on his game, his offensive AND defensive abilities are clearly still a step below the true elite of the NHL. He's not a Chara yet. He's not even a Suter.

Think about this: Dan Hamhuis had one more point than him last year and a +29. As a Canucks fan, I don't think I can remember a single glaring lapse from him. He's a stellar defensive defenseman who can also be as dangerous offensively as Subban has shown himself to be, with no history of discipline issues - just a big, hard open-ice checking game, like Subban's but chirp-free. And he's worth $4.5m a year, and he's proven himself over a much longer career. Subban, by that logic, should not be seeing north of $4m annually - at least not until he more fully proves himself, like every other D in the game has to. Del Zotto and Kulikov accepted that lesson. What makes P.K. so special other than his own ego?

Yeah RIGHT! $5.5M for Subban...
Zdeno Chara - Cap hit: $6.5M Gms 79 / G 12 / A 40 / Pts 52 +/- 33
Shea Weber - Cap hit: $7.85M Gms 78 / G 19 / A 30 / Pts 49 +/- 21

So your trying to tell us that Subban deserves to make $1M less than Chara and $2M less than Weber?? While BOTH of those mentioned have PROVEN they deserve their money. Meanwhile Subban after a few years should get nearly as much??!?!! Any even DECENT GM would be utterly stupid to do what your suggesting. If he turns out to be all that you say he will be then he should get his medium range 2-3 year deal and if he reaches where you say he's going to reach then he'll get the big bucks. Not like Montreal can't afford to pay him in 2 years! My god you want to give him Free Agent money in his second contract!

Why, because I think Subban is their future #1 D-man? Look at the Habs' current depth on D. It's terrible. Kaberle? Markov? I think Subban is better than them now (especially if Markov's injury issues persist), and is only getting better, bigger, stronger and smarter. He's the closest thing they have to a league-wide star right now, and is the best friend of the team's MVP, Price. Paying Subban now and locking him in long-term would prove Bergevin is looking at the product on the ice, not the balance sheet (which the Habs never have to worry about anyway).

OK, so Kulikov has fewer goals, slightly more assists and a career minus +/- in more games, playing in a less competitive division, and PK Subban should put pen to paper on a similar deal as him? If Subban's agent recommends that he's a buffoon. PK's worth $4.5m/yr, at least, and probably closer to $5.5m. And they're fools if they don't go four years minimum with him. Lock him in, show they're serious about building that team and try to build that team around him, Galchenyuk and Price.
