Right now the Canucks third line makes 1.3, 1.9 and 1.0 million respectively so I really don’t know what you’re talking about. As I said, there are a couple guys we’ll have to pay more than a million but I don’t think it’ll be that much more. Moreover, even if you have to spend 6-7 Mil on your third line, that still leaves you 6-7 Mil. That really isn’t unreasonable to cover a fourth line, a bottom D pairing and some depth replacement players.

11 players making less than $1 million dollars means fringe free agents and non first round rookies (and the Canucks organization ranks 26th in the league for prospects), sorry but that is quite a large number of those guys being counted on. Take a look at how much Vancouver’s current third liners are making and that will give you an idea of how much will be needed to spend on those players.

While I would agree that the Canucks window is still open, I think this year (assuming they get healthy quickly) represents their best chance to win. Next year the depth will be lacking and then after that the Sedins are free agents and young teams in Edmonton and Minnesota should be in full swing.

good move for canucks great player. I’m not sure how the hockey world can think this is a great deal (it is) and then say subban should only get 50 percent of this guys contract.

Not sure why this is getting downthumbs. Luongo is the ultimate regular-season goalie. He routinely disappears when it really matters. But how much the Canucks get back for him seems to depend on whether the team that trades for him will be able to buy him out if he’s not good enough.

The whole “x number of players signed for x dollars” statistic is grossly misleading. It entirely depends on who a team has signed. In the Canucks case, they have already locked up their top 4 D men, their top two centers, and three or four top four wingers (depending on how Kassian performs). The remaining players will all be bottom six guys or 13th forward, healthy scratch types. With one or two exceptions, none should run much more than a million bucks. Much less in fact in most cases. $13 mil is more than enough to get it done. So you’re dead wrong. If anything, by locking up our last major free agent, this signing pretty much assures that Vancouver’s “window” stays wide open at least until the Sedins start to decline.

I don’t think it hurts them. They’re already pretty much screwed as far Luongo is concerned. There’s not much of a market for a goalie who makes that much money but won’t steal you some wins. He just never made it into that elite level that the Canucks hoped he’d reach.

The Canucks are going to have some cap issues next year, currently they have 14 players under contract with less than $4 million in cap space. Assuming they buy out Ballard then they have 13 players and about $8 million available. I’m wondering if this signing doesn’t actually hurt their leverage in any possible Luongo deal? Other teams know that they’ll need that $5.3 million in cap room.

All that aside they’ll have about $13 million (after Ballard and Luongo are gone) for 11 players needed to complete the roster, the window looks to be closing quickly in Vancouver.

Very jealous of any team that has this guy. I agree with the previous comment that says he has every piece. He’ll only continue to get better, and he has a very, very high ceiling.

Damn I was holding out a tiny bit of hope that he would somehow make it to the free agent market. Would have been a great replacement for Kimmo Timonen in Philly. Quality signing by the Canucks.

SO stoked to hear this, I was dreading that Canucks were considering moving him. he’s had some consistency issues but he literally has every single piece desirable in a D: size, physicality, skating, quarterbacks the PP, premier passer, smart shot… if he puts it all together he can become one of the first-tier defenceman in the league
