PHT’s Pressing Questions: Can the Penguins rebound from their humiliating defeat?

Jan 17, 2013, 2:40 PM EDT

Every day until the season starts we’ll explore an intriguing storyline for the upcoming year.

They entered the playoffs as Stanley Cup favorites. They left embarrassed.

We are, of course, referring to the Pittsburgh Penguins, who lasted just six games of the 2012 postseason. Even worse, they fell to their archrivals from Philadelphia in a wild, nasty series that saw the teams combined for 56 goals and hundreds of minutes in penalties.

For Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, the loss is still fresh.

“I remember at different points, just kind of being in shock,” Crosby told the Post-Gazette recently. “A lot of different flashes go through my mind when I think about the series.

“Basically, what it came down to was, we didn’t deserve to win. We didn’t play well enough, all the way through.”

It’s hard to argue with that last part. The list of things the Penguins failed to do against the Flyers included protecting leads, killing penalties, and – perhaps most memorably – maintaining their composure.

Crosby in particular had trouble controlling his emotions, a surprise to many given his experience on hockey’s biggest stages. Only 25, he’s already played in two Stanley Cup finals, winning once, and an Olympic gold-medal game in which he scored the winning goal in overtime.

Yet after the Flyers took a 3-0 series lead, this is the spread that ran in the Philadelphia Daily News:

And while the Pens won Games 4 and 5 to make it more than interesting, they lost the sixth one badly – a game that began with Flyers star Claude Giroux crushing Crosby with an open-ice hit.

Moments later, Giroux would open the scoring, creating exactly the sort of magical moment Crosby is famous for producing.

As the Penguins prepare to kick off the season Saturday in (of course) Philadelphia, perhaps they can draw inspiration from the fact they’ve rebounded from disappointment before.

In 2008, they lost the Cup finals to Detroit. The next year, they got their revenge, taking out the Red Wings for the championship.

    GO PENS GO!!

  2. hank10 - Jan 17, 2013 at 2:56 PM

Unless you are NBC sports producing and airing a commercial which says otherwise:

      • hank10 - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:07 PM

And let’s not forget that NBC is owned by Comcast who also owns the Flyers. Any chance the unemployment numbers just crept up a tick?

  3. crosberries - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:00 PM

    I can’t wait for Saturday!!!

    • steelpenbucs87 - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:15 PM

Me either – so many huge storylines carrying over from last year….

      Crosby vs. Giroux
Malkin vs. Coutorier (I don’t feel like googling the correct spelling)
      Fleury/Bryz vs. Saving Hockey Pucks
      Joe Vitale vs. Briere

My guess is a game that’s not as high scoring as last years series as people get their mojo back and people transition to new lines – I think its a race to 4 goals. Crosby will get 2 points, Giroux will get 2 points, 2 fights, and an AWESOME game to kick off the season.

      • ibieiniid - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:55 PM

        lol vs. saving hockey pucks

  4. broadstbully33 - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:07 PM

    That’s such a great daily news cover…

    • hockeywithdrawal - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:15 PM

Yeah, it really shows what’s important to Philadelphia fans and how awesome Philadelphia writers are….

…and the picture is great too….when 2/3 of the city can hardly read, you need pictures. It’s really inventive too…they took his face…and put it on a lion….then called it a penguin…wtf??

Nothing good comes from Philly…especially writers, evidently.

      • g28iscrosbypimp - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:26 PM

Figures…. I guess that little paper signed by our fore fathers is nothing???

  5. bricktop02 - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:09 PM

The pens are going down like a bunch of girls at their first keg party. LET’S GO FLYERS!!!!

    • hockeywithdrawal - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:16 PM

Classy! What are you, from Philly? oh yeah…

      • crosberries - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:47 PM

Ahhhhahaha at least it wasn’t a “your momma” which is evidently still popular phrase in philthy

  6. superschrec - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:10 PM

Lets Go Pens. We will cursh the Filtadelphia Cryers

  7. superschrec - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:10 PM

Lets Go Pens. We will crush the Filtadelphia Cryers

  8. jaredphi - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:11 PM

I agree with crosberries. Saturday’s game will be tremendously fun to watch!

Tiks on for this game cannot be had for less than 3 figures….and it’s been that way since early Tuesday morning.

3 PM Sat can’t come quick enough!

  9. hockeywithdrawal - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:12 PM

Saturday is going to be great…I’m betting its sloppy on both sides, but great. The Pens were ready to smash the Cryers faces in, and came out to deliver…the refs were ready to call the slightest things…and it was a great strategy for the Cryers to dive so much in the first four games – worked perfectly. It did get ugly, though.

The biggest question in my mind after watching that series is, why the HELL do people still call the Cryers the Broad Street Bullies? That name should have died in 1975, the last year the Cryers won the cup! They were even tough (eh…sort of) in the late 70’s…but THIS Cryer squad….nooooooooooo…not tough. Good team, but no. Not bullies. Pansies.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Jan 17, 2013 at 7:40 PM

Lets see how many times we can use the term “Cryers” in one post. It will make us seem witty and cool. Lol typical bandwagon Pittsburgh fan. Go back to giving Cindy’s hypothetical sack a tongue bath.

  10. broadstbully33 - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:22 PM

Cowardly penguin… Yea that could be spelled Crosby. Also dirty cheap headhunting penguins… Just ask Lemieux

    • hockeywithdrawal - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:30 PM

No one knows what you are talking about and you sound like the crazy guy from Ace Ventura. LACES OUT DAN.

Wasn’t it Giroux that was suspended while the Cryer’s got eliminated, by the way? Why was that again? Oh yeah………..headhunting?

  11. hockeywithdrawal - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:33 PM

What I don’t understand is, if Crosby’s so cowardly, how was it him that started sh*t with the entirety of the Flyers squad on the ice before he started throwing Giroux and his limp wrists around? If you don’t remember that was right before Letang damn near neutered Timonen…funny that Talbot was no where to be seen. Guess he won’t drop the gloves for those goons.

    • phillyphanatic77 - Jan 17, 2013 at 6:36 PM

Why would Talbot be on the ice with the first liners? Of course he wasn’t there to fight because if he came off the bench he would’ve gotten a penalty. And by the way, picking a fight with Kimmo Timonen is pretty cowardly. Especially when you have a huge weight and height advantage and the guy you’re fighting has never dropped his gloves, is almost forty, and is barely five foot ten. Crosby instigated almost every brawl in that series by pulling cheap shots when the refs turned their backs. Then he let Asham and Craig Adams cleanup his messes. Everything about the Pens in that series was cowardly.

      • hockeywithdrawal - Jan 17, 2013 at 9:13 PM

I’m not even sure you watched the series, after that comment – so there’s really no point in arguing it.

  12. broadstbully33 - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:37 PM

Pretty pathetic that pens own owner writes a letter to the league about head shots then a few weeks later publicly apologizes for the dirty headhunting tactics of his team. How many pens were suspended ? Yea he beat up Tim who has never fought anybody in 15 years of playing the game. Let and is real tough.

    • crosberries - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:55 PM

All this coming from the team that celebrates being “the broad street bullies” hilarious!

  13. broadstbully33 - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:42 PM

Just admit how dirty your team played and how bad they got beat. Just watch the first shift of game six and that sums up the series. U lost. Lemieux denounced your team. Fact are facts. Go crawl into hiding again and go bankrupt a 3rd time.

    • sportsfreak13 - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:57 PM

1975 is another fact. You won 1 playoff series against them last year and then lost the next 4 out of 5 games sooo yea congrats on that!. Just curious did pens fans get this cocky and arrogant after the playoff series in 08 and 09?

    • hockeywithdrawal - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:00 PM

HOLY CRAP IF I HEAR ONE MORE THING ABOUT THE FIRST SHIFT OF ONE GAME…do you know what an insult it is to say to a hockey player – hey that was a good SHIFT you had in that one game….wow.

    • hockeywithdrawal - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:02 PM

Not such a bully…are you…you actually kind of seem sensitive…perhaps too sensitive. I’m thinking the City of “Brotherly Love” fits you juuuuust fine.

      • melonheadsdaddy - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:09 PM

Considering the amount of defensive posts you have submitted on this thread alone I would surmise that you are the sensative one. Yet another fan who is still upset about last year….that’s cute.

      • hockeywithdrawal - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:21 PM

I was actually just kind of having a good time, to be honest. If I’m making you upset, please just let me know.

  14. lameasish - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:50 PM

Start talking when u actually win something flyer fans, I know that will be hard to do since you will never win anything but just try. I also wonder if Crosby is looking at his Stanley cup or any of the other numerous trophies he has earned while Philly talks all this noise…

  15. broadstbully33 - Jan 17, 2013 at 3:59 PM

U keep bringing up the 70s the era of the bullies yet you don’t acknowledge the 2 cups they won in the 70s. I feel embarrassed for you. Why not check the all time stats against the two teams I pretty sure Philly has a huge lead in wins playoff appearances and other stats. But hey I don’t expect your fair weather city to really know anything about hockey up until the Cindy era.

  16. broadstbully33 - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:01 PM

Pens fans didn’t exist until 09

    • hockeywithdrawal - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:04 PM

We had already won two cups by then…or did you stop paying attention in 75?

      • melonheadsdaddy - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:14 PM

I’ve also noticed that all your posts (as of 410 EST) have exactly one thumb up. Kind of obvious who gave em to you don’t you think? Kinda sad…

      • hockeywithdrawal - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:22 PM

Definitely something sad here, bro…now if you’ll excuse me, Mommy and Daddy are debating. Back to sleep.

  17. broadstbully33 - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:03 PM

Lol hiding behind jersey to settle you battles?

  18. valoisjoeybfeld69 - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:04 PM

There is too much talent and character on the Pens for them not to bounce back. If they don’t then time to part with Bylsma.

  19. broadstbully33 - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:05 PM

U seem mad about that one shift… Where Giroux imposed his manly will on your female captain

  20. cbghockeyvideos87 - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:11 PM

  21. broadstbully33 - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:13 PM

Ummm…. The pens didn’t win a cup until 90-91 that shows the intelligence of pens fans. Wow you’re a dumbass

    • sportsfreak13 - Jan 17, 2013 at 5:05 PM

hahaha your insulting his intellegence yet your the one who failed to read and comprehend his statement. You said “pens fans didnt exist unitl 09″ to which he replied ” We already won 2 cups by then or did you stop paying attention in 1975″. Wow broadstbullly33, just wow.

      • xavier46 - Jan 17, 2013 at 5:17 PM

        Hahaha… Insert foot in mouth

  22. puckmepuckyou - Jan 17, 2013 at 4:21 PM

you Pens fans whine louder than your team captain!! Your team had talent but no balls that’s why they got their asses handed to them

  23. steelers88 - Jan 17, 2013 at 6:13 PM

Pittsburgh combined has 17 championships to Filthedelphia’s 7 and Filthy has twice as many teams. HA

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Jan 17, 2013 at 7:53 PM

Really were comparing other sports now? how about those Pirates? Jeeze what a troll.

      • sportsfreak13 - Jan 17, 2013 at 8:18 PM

Those pirates have won a championship more recent then the flyers.

      • phillyphannn83 - Jan 19, 2013 at 1:26 AM

And the Phillies have won a championship more recently than the Pirates, so what.

  24. boondocksaint7 - Jan 17, 2013 at 6:33 PM

Broadstreet, you are a typical Philly fan. Talking smack when your team has won nothing. Last time I went to a flyers game they had pee-wee hockey players on the ice in between periods. When the kids would miss a shot or fall down the flyer fans booed and taunted them. All Philly fans are like their teams, an embarrassment to sports and humanity!

    • phillyphannn83 - Jan 19, 2013 at 1:24 AM

Really?? I’m a firefighter and you think I’M an embarrassment to humanity??? What exactly do you do for society?? Apparently the city of Pittsburgh thinks stereotypes are a good thing.

  25. steelers88 - Jan 17, 2013 at 6:43 PM

Talk about Cowardly Giroux Cried about Crosby hurting his wrists! And you guys call Crosby a joke! I bet If Crosby was on the Flyers you guys would love him.

    • andyb02 - Jan 17, 2013 at 8:15 PM

He was just answering a question on the dirty play of the penguins. I wouldn’t consider it crying when you are just answering a question honestly. He played through the injury too and did not use it as an excuse.

  26. boondocksaint7 - Jan 17, 2013 at 6:48 PM

Flyer fans said the same stuff about jagr 15 years ago. Last hast year they were tripping over each other to kiss his ass. The news article is only further proof that Philly fans, even the media, have no class! That is why Philly teams never win! No class or integrity!

  27. broadstreetbeatdown - Jan 17, 2013 at 7:51 PM

Everyone knows two facts about NHL hockey and its poster boy Cindy Crosby. He is a great hockey player..and also the whiniest, mealy mouthed, cry baby to ever lace them up. I mean c’mon Hens fans, this is a guy who blubbered to refs because Caps fans were throwing too many hats on the ice after an Ovi hat trick. What a nancy boy!!

  28. dcent87 - Jan 17, 2013 at 7:56 PM

    Nope. Pens suck.

  29. steelers88 - Jan 17, 2013 at 8:12 PM

Your just jealous we have the two best players in hockey Crosby and Malkin.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Jan 17, 2013 at 10:07 PM

Yes, you have two OF the best not the two best, however the two “best” players happened to get manhandled in the playoffs. One, Cindy was simply repeatedly outplayed and dumped on by G and the other was shut down by a 19 year old greenhorn with superstar skills. The latter scenario resulted in Gina taking the stupid frustration penalties and head hunting tactics that has become a habit for her.

      • tsi431 - Jan 18, 2013 at 9:17 AM

Manhandled? They had 13 points in 6 games and a +/- combined of 0. That is not manhandled.

Giourx was minus 2 by the way.

  30. ml3939 - Jan 17, 2013 at 8:20 PM

The Penguins are a pretty pathetic franchise in the overall picture. The team intentionally lost so they could draft Lemieux and were so bad for a stretch that they finished high enough to draft MAF, Crosby, Malkin and Stahl in successive drafts. The Penguins throughout their history have missed the playoffs as regularly as the Flyers have made the conference finals. They have also missed the playoffs more than twice as many times as the Flyers have. The Flyers are 4-2 against the Penguins all time in playoff series and have dominated the regular season match since both teams came into existence. 1975 is very special to Penguins fans as that is the first time their illustrious franchise filed for bankruptcy and they managed to pull off the rare feat of winning the first 3 games of a playoff series only to lose the series. Basically the Penguins suck for long stretches of time so they can amass talent and be relevant for short stretches. Historically speaking, it wasn’t much of franchise until 1990. Be proud.

  31. steelers88 - Jan 17, 2013 at 8:32 PM

I am proud to be a Penguins fan by the way if the Flyers have been so good why haven’t they won the Stanley cup? Since 1975? Since 1975 the Pens have 3 Stanley Cups to the Flyers 0 .

    • ml3939 - Jan 17, 2013 at 9:02 PM

The Islanders have 4 Cups since then too. Would you rather be an Islanders fan or a Penguins fan? Are the islanders a better franchise overall than the Penguins because they have one more Cup than the Penguins.

  32. boondocksaint7 - Jan 17, 2013 at 9:04 PM

I have seen the penguins win 3 cups and the Steelers win 2 Super Bowls in my lifetime. The best part is I know I will never, EVER, see the flyers or eagles win a title. EVER!

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Jan 17, 2013 at 10:13 PM

WOW you have exactly one more cup than the Flyers, good job. You also have four bankruptcies and three near relocations. You guys are like the historic champions of being a crappy franchise.

      • tsi431 - Jan 18, 2013 at 9:21 AM

You act like bankruptcy is murder. Its not, its a structured way to payback debt. Millions of people around the world do this every year. Business’s do it even more then that. If you think sports teams are anything else more then business’s then you are the idiot.

      • phillyphannn83 - Jan 19, 2013 at 1:31 AM

WOW someone needs to look up bankruptcy in the dictionary. Bankruptcy is NOT a way to pay back debt, it forgives debt. Since you’re having trouble with this, I’ll help you. when your debt is forgiven, it means you dont have to pay your debts, and those that hold your debts get screwed, they DONT get paid.

  33. boondocksaint7 - Jan 17, 2013 at 9:06 PM

    Never EVER!

  34. boondocksaint7 - Jan 17, 2013 at 9:31 PM

EVER! Eagles and flyers are even bigger losers then their fans and will never win a championship! EVER!

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Jan 17, 2013 at 10:15 PM

Dude, are you twelve years old? Mommy should cut down on your computer time.

  38. boondocksaint7 - Jan 17, 2013 at 10:49 PM

That’s not what your mommy said! Enjoy never seeing a championship! Unless Pittsburgh wins again. You can watch that. Trust me it never gets old.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Jan 18, 2013 at 12:19 AM

Mom jokes. The epitome of maturity. Isn’t past your bedtime sonny? The adults are speaking. Do you even live anywhere near Pittsburgh Fanboy?

  39. broadstreetbeatdown - Jan 18, 2013 at 12:27 AM

So does your old man. He sure is a sweet butt.

  40. boondocksaint7 - Jan 18, 2013 at 12:41 AM

Actually my job is closer to Philly which is another reason I know how bad the fans are. Oh and by the way I’m not a kid just not born in the mid 70’s when the flyers actually won something. There were only like 5 teams and your broke ass probably didn’t even have a tv to watch them! You brought up moms first so let’s get off moms cause I just got of yours. I never met a bully from Philly yet. Just punks that run there mouth till there team chokes again and again!

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Jan 18, 2013 at 1:27 AM

Another internet tough guy, regurgitating cracks from 1987. Good on ya little boy. I bet you’ve never been to PA. Keep blowing Cindy bro. it seems your mouth does have a purpose in life.

  41. boondocksaint7 - Jan 18, 2013 at 12:46 AM

And now you say your gay, checking out dudes butts. Not a shocker. A high percentage if flyer fans are. It’s cool. Be gay. Be proud. Go get a rainbow flag or what ever it is you guys do.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Jan 18, 2013 at 1:28 AM

We get our rainbow flags and go to your daddy’s house for a party in his mouth.

  42. bobhpine - Jan 18, 2013 at 10:38 AM

1975 was so long ago. LOLing

  43. bobhpine - Jan 18, 2013 at 10:43 AM

Unless you Philly losers are in your 40’s, the flyers might as well have won zero cups since you weren’t old enough to remember. What’s that like? Never seeing your hockey team win a cup. Sucks I bet.

  44. jaredphi - Jan 18, 2013 at 3:02 PM

I’m really dismayed by the hom0phobic and prejudicial comments that have been made in this thread’s comments section.

These comments have been made by both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh fans and these sorts of posts are ignorant, immature, antiquated and deeply offensive.

To those that have made these comments – are you so insecure in your own sexuality that you must spout off with such low-brow, racist statements?

These hom0phobic statements tarnish not only the reputation of those who make these comments, but also that of the sport of ice hockey itself….not to mention the hurt such comments can cause to any of hockey’s LGBT fans who might be reading this thread, as well as to straight allies of the LGBT community like myself who have good friends and family members that are part of the LGBT community.

Note – I had to put a zero in place of an “o” in two areas of my post. I guess PHT has their censor settings set a little too high as I sincerely doubt they would’ve censored and deleted my post the last two times I posted it…if they’d just READ IT FIRST.
