Dude, Frans Nielsen is their dedicated #2C until such time as a better option comes along. Which Keith Aucoin, great AHL career or not, certainly isn’t.

Wanna bet? You think it was a coincidence that Aucoin was claimed and Strome sent down the same day? Aucoin will get a shot at the roster either as 2nd or 3rd line center. Aucoin, Frans and Marty are the only veteran center the Isles have after JT. They are the likely starters at center. Note that the Leafs gave Aucoin TOI w/ Kessel and Lupul. Don’t see it as a stretch that he competes with Frans for the 2nd line spot.

To be precise, they didn’t have much veteran depth. Signing Martinek and claiming Finley and Hickey helped add depth on D although Finley and Hickey have no real NHL resume. Aucoin is insurance in the event that Stromer is not quite ready to step in at 2nd line center.

I love what the isles are doing. The team had no real depth going into the season and they need to field two teams. Aucoin is a great guy to have the kids developing with in the AHL.

There is a limit – you can still only claim until your roster is full. I love the waiver system – it’s the only thing that keeps GM’s honest when they are giving one-way contracts. Otherwise they’d give them all one-way contracts and then put them down in the AHL anyway.

They should make a limit on how many players one team can claim. Or just change it from “waivers” to “sent to NYI”.
