2.5? Doubtful. Teams know he’s getting paid either way.. a contender will leverage their success vs how much Reddon gets paid. He could get 2.5 with say… Columbus. I see him signing for 1.5, which is just enough to get 600k over the AHL salary dump number to keep him in the NHL, and it’s a cap friendly number for him to get on a legit team.

Redden will get a 1 year deal for 2.5 million. There are going to be many interested parties. He is still a good defenseman. He just isn’t a 6.5 million dollar defenseman. He will stay in the east. Those are my predictions.

Glad to see Wade Redden finally free! If I were him I’d have a chip on my shoulder the size of Texas and if I get a shot to play the Rangers…..

According to Eliotte Friedman there’s actually quite a bit of interest out there for Redden, the feeling is that at $6.5 million he wasn’t worth it but as a $1-2 million guy he’s perfect. Friedman named a few places he thought might bid on Redden, I can’t remember them all but he did indicate that Edmonton is expected to make a string push for him.

For Gomez he listed the Leafs and Devils as the most likely landing spots.

Wade Redden would be a good fit most anywhere that could use an experienced Dman who’s a great influence in the room and could use an experienced presence to mentor young Dman … so pretty much everywhere.

Redden’s not a bum, he’s just been ridiculously overpaid these last years.

I was confused. I was thinking waivers as in sending a player with a 1 way contract to the AHL the player has to go through waivers, not as in, we’re sending your underachieving, overpayed butt home kinda waivers. My bad.

They have to pass though waiver and then be bought out by there clubs before they are free agents.

the following was reported here by Mike Halford, “According to various reports, the NHL and NHLPA have agreed to open another window for compliance buyouts on contracts — one that begins now, ends before Jan. 19…and comes with a wrinkle regarding cap hits.

Teams utilizing the “accelerated cap buyout” will take their player’s entire cap hit for the 2013 season, even if the player signs with another team as a UFA.

For future seasons, the cap hit would come off the books.”

In other words, in the case of Gomez, the Habs will be on the hook for this year’s pro-rated salary, give him the buyout money based on the remainder of his contract, which is 1.5 million for each of the next 2 years. Plus they get the opportunity to make extra bucks if they are signed to a contract by another team.

There is a huge difference between youth/inexperience at the forward position and the defense position. The Flyers were young at forward. If Despres can’t cracked the squad the Penguins need a body for the top 4. And after hearing what Shero said about Despres the other day it doesn’t look like he will make the big club at least out of camp. Niskanen improved a lot last year but I would rather see him in the 3rd pairing with Engelland. The only other options that were invited to camp were Burtuzzo/Strait/Lovejoy. They might make a good 5/6/7 d-man but neither can fill a top 4 role. Bylsma said he is gonna try Orpik with Martin to start the year. A small gamble on a one year deal when they have the cap space to bring in Redden to play with Letang would not be a bad thing. If it doesn’t work out who care you waive him and you back were you started. But in a short season and no one else to fill the role I see no reason to be against it. Redden will have a few offers. Hopefully the fact that the Rangers/Penguins are expected to be battling for the division might make Redden want to sign with the Penguins.

Why do I just feel like the islanders are gonna sign Gomez? Even if its under a million I feel like there one of the few teams considering it.

There is no way I want to see either of these guys as part of the Penguins. Neither would add anything – and the young defenders have been “developing” for a couple years now. This is a case of letting the young guys we have here play now. Did you not see what happened with the Filthadelphia Cryers last year. Their run was fueled by the young guys that had been thrust into their positions due to injuries.

If they claim him off waivers, yes. But once he clears waivers he will be a free agent and can sign anywhere for whatever they offer him.

Rich589: you’re precisely right, which is why both players will easily clear waivers today, since no team in their righting will want to honor those contracts. Then, tomorrow after they clear waivers, they can sign with anyone. Then again, maybe Pat quinn and the leafs may make waiver claims on both like they would have about 10 years ago.

I was under the impression that if a team picks up a player from waivers, that team must honor the existing contract. As far as I know, it’s not like signing a free agent. So unless the Flyers plan on buying him out after this season, wont he still be there until his contract runs up at 6.5 million a year?

It wouldn’t shock me to see Redden land in either Philly or Pit because both of those teams have awful defense…. and so long as hes not making $6.5 million a season, Redden is a fairly top notch defensemen.

Gomez is probably going to have a slightly harder time finding work, but if I was a betting man I would think perhaps NJ will take a chance on him. NJ is going to need all the offense they can get, and for the right price Gomez might be worth the risk.

Either way, its a good thing for both these guys that they might be a chance to play this year. An NHL players career is short enough, and no one should be forced to sit a season out over something stupid like this.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the Penguins take a gamble on Redden. Redden will be getting around 7.5 million not to play for the Rangers the next 2 years. The Penguins could use a stop gap for a year until some of the young d-man develope more. They did the same thing when Jay McKee got bought out from the Blues a few years back. 1 year, 1 million I would take a chance. He didn’t get sent to the AHL because he sucked. He got sent to the AHL because his contract sucked.

This is good news. The guys will preserve some sort of dignity. Hopefully they will find a team willing to give them a chance and prove they can still add value.
