Ya, I think you’re right, self-involved might have been the wrong word. Was early, my vocabulary wasn’t in full swing, I guess. I think my thing is that I just don’t appreciate the lead-by-example type of captain as much as the captain that’s almost like an assistant coach at the same time as a captain. Don’t get me wrong, Giroux is probably my favorite active player, but I’d rather have somebody rallying the troops rather than having the troops rally themselves behind him.

And the comparison to OV maybe wasn’t the best one either. I was talking strictly about the time OV said he feels he doesn’t need to say much to be an effective captain. I don’t like that.

I believe “self-involved” is the wrong term to describe Giroux’s leadership style. Granted, he’s said in interviews recently that leading as Captain means to set an example on the ice, but you can tell he cares about the outcome of every game. If you surveyed Girouxs teammates I’m sure he would be one of the most well-like and respected on the team. He has the ability to put his team on his back like he showed in game six against the Pens. I’d equate his leadership style to Jonathan Toews. I think it’s clear to most Flyer fans that G was the de-facto team leader last season anyway, even without the C. There’s no question Talbot, Timonen, Briere, and Hartnell garner a ton of respect in the locker room, but IMO you could tell through interviews and on-ice demeanor that Giroux was driving the ship. His attitude, although somewhat introverted, is nothing like Ovi. He’s doesn’t seem to be looking for fame, fortune, or name recognition. He just wants to win. And if Crosby can be a captain with the way he embarrassed himself last season (“I don’t like them” like a petulant child) there should be no question Giroux has what it takes.

I respect what you’re saying, and I actually love Hartnell for a key piece on a cup-winning team, but not as Captain. The times I’ve seen his personality off-camera, like Hard Knocks, Twitter and All-Star Game weekend, it’s just not him.

he’s got more leadership than Giroux, IMO. Giroux seems like he’d be more of a self-involved, OV-like captain (where he doesn’t feel he needs to say much to be a cap’n, and we see how that’s working out for the Caps) if anything. I’m sure he’ll get it, but I hope he steps up with the C on his shirt. idk if you’ve ever seen Claude’s demeanor when the Flyers have a game to win, but he always seems to be pumping up himself moreso than his teammates, Hartnell is the opposite. JMHO.

Scott “Suck it Phaneuf” Hartnell as captain? Boy it’s clear there hasn’t been a championship in Philly in a while if some of their fans think that’s a championship-caliber Captain.

As unpopular of an idea as I know this is, even to Flyers fans, I’d like to see Talbot and Hartnell considered. The only thing I think that’s keeping Hartsy from getting it is his temper/discipline. Talbot goes out there and plays as hard as possible every game…. just might not be high enough on the depth chart to really be a captain (ref. Milan Hejduk).

Weiss is clearly the frontrunner in Florida. Most games played of any franchise player in history and he’s only 29. Bit of a dismal commentary on franchise loyalty over the years, but hey, at least they’ve got a good captain nominee.

I don’t see Flyers naming Briere captain as they will be cutting him loose next year due to cap restrictions and Giroux’s resigning.

Brian Campbell or Weiss would be good picks for the Panthers. And Salvador over Kovalchuk? Hmm interesting. Any news on the Flyers captaincy? Giroux seems to be the obvious choice, but some have mentioned Timonen or Briere
