Hey, he can ask whatever he wants. If no one is willing to meet those demands, he should just keep the guy and have the best 1-2 goalie combo in the league.

Futures are one thing but the article states Gillis is trying to land a roster player and a top prospect. Also, take Tampa, Anaheim and Winnipeg off your list, they are all set with their goaltenders.

Exactly !!The guy is $$ except in shoot outs, slow for one on one, has losing record for OTs. But he make any team better with some rest late in the season on long road trips out East.

The last four teams standing last season were all in the top eight for goals against in the regular season. LA was second best in the regular season.

Goalies matter. A lot. If you want to win, you’ve got to keep the puck out of the net. Luongo can offer that. Not many other players can.

For a lot of teams, selling playoff tickets makes their season financially. Even for teams with a solid fanbase, they still need the playoffs to push them past breaking even.

Maybe Columbus has no use for him just yet, but for teams like Tampa (281 goals against last year), Chicago (238 goals against), Anaheim (231 GA), Edmonton (239), or Winnepeg (246)…these teams could all see their teams fortunes turn around awfully fast with a solid goalie.

Giving up a prospect and pick that aren’t contributing for a guy that is almost guaranteed to contribute immediately is very reasonable. And with Luongo, that pick won’t be a lottery pick, as it was with the Kessel trade.

I don’t think anyone denies that Luongo is a good goalie, but no matter how many times Gillis tries to tell us otherwise, the contract sucks and therefore drags his trade value down. Yeah, he could push a lot of the teams like the Leafs over the hump and into the playoffs but is that really a good long term move if your goal is to eventually win the cup? His performance is going to start falling off as a lot of the young teams hit their peak. If your giving up a few minor assets, it might be worth it for a team in a win now mode but if you’re giving up anything significant in return, I just don’t see how it makes sense.

As for the 2010 Olympics, he looked shaky at best in the final. Comparing his performance to a past his prime Brodeur in a prelimany round game misses the point.

Basically what I was trying to say above. There are very few goalies on his level.

From November through March of last season, his worst month’s save % was .921. Add that to about any team and you basically guarantee they make the playoffs.

The only team to have a goalie with better numbers than him and not make the playoffs was Calgary. But they scored the 3rd fewest goals of any team in the league and still almost made the playoffs.

First and foremost, I don’t like Luongo…..BUT mark my words….
If he goes to a bad team, they will be a playoff team.
If he goes to a good team, the will be a contender.

As a Leaf fan I would take Luongo in a heart beat. But the contract is too long and Reimer is almost ready.

But consider this, Lou won gold and made it to game 7 of the final yes; but look who played in front of him. He would improve the Leafs but I don’t think he’d look as good as he did then.

I understand the above three points of view, but I think an objective observer would say that Luongo is a very good goalie, and there are a lot of teams that do not have a good goalie, much less a very good goalie.

In the Olympics, after Brodeur sort of sucked during the preliminary round, it was Luongo that stepped up and won them gold. With Brodeur, 5-3 loss to USA; with Luongo 3-2 OT win against USA. And honestly, the USA played better in the gold medal game than they did in the preliminary round.

With such a short season, I would think there are teams that would take a gamble that he could drastically help their playoff fortunes and deal with whatever risk might be involved in the offseason.

Stop trying to blow smoke over everyone’s butt Gillis. His contract is a roadblock to potential trades. Plain and simple. Also, your other goalie didn’t look so hot in the Spangler Cup.
