As a canucks fan I’ve been pretty angry with his play in big games at times, but i also remember before the team was any good and he dragged them past dallas and stole a game against anaheim in 2007… best of luck to luongo

Glad someone else views it this way- I don’t think the Leafs are a goalie away from being a Cup contender (perhaps not even a playoff contender), so all this does is bring in someone who won’t win enough games to turn things around, but win enough of them to poke at a low playoff seed every so often. The lack of results will cause the Toronto media to draw and quarter him, fans will turn on him, and he’ll end up run out of there too within a couple of years. Whole things seems pointless- and the funny part will be Brian Burke sitting somewhere laughing at the whole thing.

Vancouver will demand a high price, and it will be the kind of young talent the Leafs should be trying to build with, not trade for a shaky veteran who (let’s be honest) only has a few years left on him anyway.

Again … I agree with you for the most part but let’s not forget that the 2nd line ended up basically being Kesler on one leg and half a groin. It was a battle of attrition and they lost, but the overall make up of the team and talent was there.

But ignoring all of that, you’re main point is spot on.

you’re 90 % right, had great 1 & 2 lines but those llines got checked to death by Boston. The 3rd line was not up to par. The penalty short goals killed them too.I think that year the West was down too.That $10 million a year is just a big round bulls eye on Luongo’s back. Nice $$ but being the highest paid and getting $2 million more than the next goalie is tough to carry in any sport.His biggest weakness is that he is very slow on one on one in OT shootouts, losing record. And the media beat his butt on it too. But I still think he is a great goalie overall.And he does a lot for local charities as well, good guy.

Only place you lost me was on the “good not great” team .. that team was stacked to the tits.

They took on all teams in all divisions and conferences and beat everyone … all year long, and not taking anything away from how great Boston played in the Finals, outside of a few major significant injuries they would probably would have taken it home.

But other than that I’m with you.

Leafs would be stupid to get him, go with the kids and get a good pick. Luongo isn’t gonna win them a cup but he will make them good enough to not get a good draft pick.

Luongo ‘s contract has made him a lightning rod. He has been in the top 5 goalies stats for all his years in Vancouver with only last year a down year and he still had a winning record. If his contract was for 2 million a year less, the media would not beat this story like a drum every 5 minutes. He was the winnning goalie for Canada in the Olympics and took a good not great team to the Stanley Cup Finals to the seveth game.

You can’t ask for a better teammate than that. I bet these two split games down the middle this year til he’s traded. I’m sure someone will find something negative about this though.
