The Flyers are interested in Roberto Luongo

If you thought the Roberto Luongo-to-Toronto rumors were getting hot, you might want to buckle up.

TVA’s Enrico Ciccone tweeted earlier today that the Philadelphia Flyers were interested in picking up Luongo and that rumor was confirmed by TSN’s James Duthie this evening.

What to make of all this? Not much right now other than another team apparently getting in the hunt for the likely soon-to-be Canucks star goalie. Before the lockout, rumors swirled about the Florida Panthers and Chicago Blackhawks being involved in the hunt for Luongo, but those teams didn’t have a goalie signed to a long-term, big money deal the way the Flyers do.

Oh yeah, Ilya Bryzgalov is still the Flyers’ goalie and he has eight years left on his contract with the team at $5.6 million per year. With each team having two compliance buyouts coming after this season is over, it’s possible some team could/would buy out Bryz.

Then again, as Duthie says, the rumor doesn’t mean the Flyers will acquire Luongo, it just means they’ve asked about him. Can we get the CBA fully ratified so silly season can begin in earnest?

Update: Philly.com’s Frank Seravalli spoke with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren and his take on the rumor is pretty fantastic. “That made me chuckle. Safe to say they aren’t true. They have no basis or merit.”

Another update: Adrian Dater of the Denver Post says to not believe the Flyers’ disinterest and adds that the Canucks would ask for Niklas Grossmann in a deal for Luongo. Failing that they’d ask for Schenn. We’ll assume he means Luke Schenn. Gee, this couldn’t just be an effort by the Canucks to drive up the price for a guy they almost have to trade, could it?

i wouldnt be surprised if it happen. flyers have tried crazier stuff in the past plus maple leafs could find a way to screw up the Luongo trade. But i do remember before Luongo went to the canucks flyers had interested in him.

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren on Luongo rumors: “That made me chuckle. Safe to say they aren’t true. They have no basis or merit.” he’s going after him.

  2. bigbadbruins77 - Jan 9, 2013 at 8:42 PM

I would die laughing if the flyers used one of their amnesty buyouts on Bryz. Even they know he’s a headcase! Two of my best friend are flyers fans, man that would make my day because they REFUSE to say anything about how great Bryz is and make excuses for his poor performance last year.

If there’s a big name available, Philly will go for them. Any time and every time, like clockwork.

    • zetaone - Jan 9, 2013 at 9:58 PM

I think you’re confusing Philly for the Rangers.

  5. matthewmacisaac - Jan 9, 2013 at 8:59 PM

I don’t see how getting a goalie that choked in the playoffs with a much more skilled team is going to help the Flyers. Luongo let in some weak goals in the playoffs and would look even worse in Philly, the way they didn’t play defense last year. Bryz was one of the few Flyers to show up for the Devil’s series (his stats may not have looked good but he battled and behind that defensive effort even Quick would’ve looked bad). The one game the Flyers played defense was game six against the Penguins and that was also Bryz’s best game of the playoffs. The team defense was great in that game. Forwards came back and helped the defensemen and they held one of the leagues most potent offenses to 1 goal. That is what the Flyers need every night. If they get it, it won’t matter who is in goal.

    • hockeyfan28 - Jan 9, 2013 at 9:54 PM

I don’t see where you get Vancouver is all that more skilled it wasn’t him that couldn’t beat quick

    • phillyphanatic77 - Jan 9, 2013 at 11:45 PM

I agree with most of what you said, except for the Canucks being a “much more skilled team”. Vancouver does have some excellent skill players, but I think the Flyers have a deeper forward group. There’s no arguing the Canucks are better on the back end, I’ll give you that. But I’d definitely take the Flyers forwards, as a whole, even with the Sedin twins. I’d say they’re pretty even overall. So I wouldn’t mind picking up Luongo. There’s no way we can give up a Grossman or Schenn, however, with the depth issues we already have on the blueline. Idk what Vancouver would take for Luongo (maybe Matt Read and few picks/prospects) but we can’t give up more defenders. And no Brayden Schenn or Couturier either. That said, I’d love to pickup a legitimate #1 despite his Stanley Cup struggles. He can’t be any less consistent than Bryz. Tough decision for Holmgren.

      • you4real - Jan 10, 2013 at 2:06 AM

We’ll take briere, guy is an absolute beast when playoffs roll around

      • valoisvipers - Jan 10, 2013 at 10:30 AM

        You don’t trade Matt Read!
        You don’t want Luongo!

      • phillyphanatic77 - Jan 10, 2013 at 1:38 PM

Valoisvipers- I don’t wanna trade anyone but in the NHL you have to give something to get something. Read would be one of the players that could potentially be replaced, especially when compared to the possibility of giving up Grossman or L.Schenn, either of whom we can ill afford to lose. Our depth on the blueline is already stretched to the limit. I don’t necessarily want Luongo but there’s no denying he would an upgrade on Bryz and could potentially be the franchise goalie the Flyers have lacked since Hextall. And if he comes here and underperforms then we can always use the second amnesty on him. Eklund says this rumor is untrue, so that might just mean it’ll happen.

      • valoisvipers - Jan 10, 2013 at 11:54 PM

Phillyfanatic77 Matt Read would have been rookie of the year last year if he wasn’t a Flyer(league doesn’t like giving Flyers awards) The undrafted kid was a stud playing on all lines an in all situations. He is a the coach’s pet, a guy he can use at any time and he will always be defense minded first but still make great plays and apply loads of pressure on the other team.
Luongo has peaked and is on his way down, the contact he has is horrible and he has proved he is not capable of winning the big ones.
Bryz had a rough year but remember he is a Russian that played in the desert enjoying obscurity. Then to be picked up and put into Philly, big city, hockey hotbed and media circus. So maybe we will see more of what he did last March and just maybe the Flyers will remember how to play defense like they did 2 seasons ago. Yes he gave up some soft ones, everybody does, but a lot of what I saw last season were the result of poor giveaways by the defense.
Now sing this to a John Lennon song.
        Give Bryz a chance…All I am saying..is..give Bryz a chance…..

      • phillyphanatic77 - Jan 11, 2013 at 12:55 PM

Can’t say I disagree with you, I think Read deserved consideration but like you said he plays for the Flyers and I think his advanced age (26) played a part in him being passed over. As for Bryz, Tim Panaccio has been raving about his improved psyche and relaxed attitude since his arrival at the practice facility last week. Hopefully that’s a good sign. Believe me I’m pulling for Bryz to put it together this season. I love the Flyers and with the dreadful state of Philadelphia sports right now the City needs something to be excited about. There’s no question he was overwhelmed by the differences between Phoenix (and Anaheim) and Philly, so maybe it is a matter of being comfortable with his surroundings. I believe if he somehow starts out the season like he played in March then it could be a sign that his troubles are past, but if he comes out of the gate giving up weak goals, playing out of position, and moves lethargicly then his fragile psyche probably won’t recover. The first few weeks will be huge for Bryz. If he’s costing the team wins then Holmgren has to consider looking for help, maybe Dean Lombardi can help us out with Bernier.

      • valoisvipers - Jan 11, 2013 at 11:40 PM

Phillphanatic Lets agree not to throw any snowballs at Bryz and if he does mess up then look to the Wild for a goalie, they seem to have a glut of decent tenders on the team and the farm.

    Nnnnoooooooooo!!!

  9. orangeandblack67 - Jan 9, 2013 at 9:46 PM

Really Matthew, a much more skilled team? Giroux alone is a better all around individual player than either of the Sedin sisters. Another note, the Flyers beat Vancouver the last time they met. They are a good team but I beg to differ on your comment.

    • ravenscaps48 - Jan 9, 2013 at 9:51 PM

Agreed. Just what would they have to give up to get him?

      • nach0mancandysandwich - Jan 9, 2013 at 10:00 PM

Really? You guys think he’s better than 2 people with world class skill who also share a brain? I am willing to argue that the only reason Canucks don’t have a cup is because of Luongo…and Mark Messier HEYO!!!!

    • hawkeedawg - Jan 9, 2013 at 9:58 PM

Orange and Black, only people that know about hockey should be posting here. How much hardware have your Flyers won over the past 5 seasons? How many 100 point + players have you had in the last five years?

Calling the Sedins “sisters” is just not acceptable anymore. More than a point per game pace the last 4 years for both of them.

Go ahead, comment, but don’t be a twelve year old with Rose colored glasses on. You lose all credibility.

Not sure how they could afford that since they have $2.75 million in cap room, yes they’ll get relief from Pronger being on long term injury but that happens game to game not all at once.

  11. canadabaseball - Jan 9, 2013 at 9:56 PM

What would they have to give up for him

  12. nach0mancandysandwich - Jan 9, 2013 at 9:57 PM

I love how Flyer fans think they have the best team in the league just because of basically one great player and a couple of role players benefiting from that player. Also who are you planning trading? Do you think The Canucks want a song for him?

    • phillyphanatic77 - Jan 9, 2013 at 11:57 PM

I in no way think the Flyers have the best team, they’re not even the best team in their division. I can readily admit that the Pens and Rangers are more skilled. However, saying that our whole team consists of role players that only benefit from Giroux is beyond absurd. Giroux only plays 20-25 minutes a game, so all that time he’s off the ice the Flyers suck? That’s bs. Yes Hartnell benefited from playing on a line with him but he’s been a consistent 20-goal scorer throughout his career. Briere, Voracek, Simmonds, Read, Couturier, Schenn, Talbot and Hartnell are all productive players. Throw in Giroux (along with Fedetenko and Wellwood) and that is a top-notch forward corps. Even without Pronger and Carle our D is serviceable, with Coburn, Timonen, Grossman, and Schenn. You’re an idiot if you think the Flyers success is based solely on the production of Giroux.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Jan 9, 2013 at 11:58 PM

And Meszaros is an above average player when healthy

      • woodstakes - Jan 10, 2013 at 12:58 AM

Not a Flyer fan but I have to agree with phillyphan here… your bit over stated and giving an albeit great forward in Giroux more credit than he deserves. Luongo would make the Flyers much scarier although they do need some defense help, Luongo would make them look much better. Bryz is beyond inconsistent.. the guy lets in soft goals like its going out of style.

  13. jimw81 - Jan 9, 2013 at 10:07 PM

ill take Luongo if elder is involved somehow.

  16. hawkeedawg - Jan 9, 2013 at 10:33 PM

Hey Orange and Black, where did you go? Since last lockout, your MIGHTY FLYERS have won 1 Masterton (LaPerriere 2010-11) and 1 Wales (09-10) trophies. Where has that got you?

    Canucks
    1 Adams- Vigneault-2006-07
    2 Presidents – 2010-11,2011-12
    1 Hart – H. Sedin 2009-10
    1 Lindsay – D.Sedin – 20010-11
2 Art Ross- YOUR SISTERS???? one each- 09-10, 10-11
    1 Clarence Campbell – 2010-11
    1 Selke – Kesler – 2010-11
    1 Jennings LUONGO/Schneider -2010-11
1 GM of Year -Gillis- 2010-11

    Stop calling them sisters.

Come on now, lets here what you have to say, I am waiting……

    • parkway4 - Jan 9, 2013 at 10:53 PM

      Ready? WHERE IS YOUR CUP?

      • emoser - Jan 10, 2013 at 9:44 AM

        But, but… so much HARDWARE

    • melonheadsdaddy - Jan 9, 2013 at 11:02 PM

      This post bores me…

    • woodstakes - Jan 10, 2013 at 1:00 AM

Yeah, not gonna talk to much trash here (since my team hasn’t one a cup yet) but, you can put up all the hardware you want.. but without a Stanley Cup listed in there, none of it really amounts to anything except big contracts on your team.

    • girouxsalem87 - Jan 10, 2013 at 4:16 AM

And since the last lockout both teams have been to 1 SCF and both lost, so the trophy count doesn’t mean anything if your team doesn’t lift the large silver 35+ pound cup over their heads in June.

    • psousa1 - Jan 10, 2013 at 10:43 AM

That’s pathetic. Nobody cares who won the friggin’ Presidents trophy. Bruins.

    • mkflyers2k - Jan 10, 2013 at 11:20 AM

And the Flyers went to the conference finals one more time over that span whats your point? The Flyers have won 16 titles since they started. The Canucks won 5 of their 8 since the lockout. Flyers also won 2 cups, have 8 Finals appearences and are the 2nd most winningest team in the NHL…. right behind the Canadians. Bye bye yourself.

    • mkflyers2k - Jan 10, 2013 at 11:23 AM

Sorry Canucks won 9. I missed one.

  17. orangeandblack67 - Jan 9, 2013 at 10:36 PM

My point exactly. They are good with the puck on their stick but at what other facet of the game do they excel in??? The only complete player on the Canucks would be Kesler when he is healthy. As for kody I would like to know which teams bandwagon you jump off and on?

    • hawkeedawg - Jan 9, 2013 at 10:39 PM

And just who do you have that puts up 100+ points for your team over the past 5 years.
You are losing this argument from every angle possible.

Most Flyer fans are OK on this forum, YOU ARE NOT!!!

      • melonheadsdaddy - Jan 9, 2013 at 11:09 PM

Giroux had 93 last year…what’s 7 more points? Full season this year he’d have gone over easily…flyers also had 6 20+ goal scorers last year…stop. You sound like a spurned ex…why you really mad?

  18. orangeandblack67 - Jan 9, 2013 at 10:43 PM

I also love how people jump down are throat when we defend our players. The Flyers have had a lot more success than a lot of other teams in the league. Granted we have not won the cup in some time but success is not always measured in silver.

    • kitshky - Jan 9, 2013 at 11:06 PM

Wait …you’re rippin Vancouver but saying success is not always measured in silver? That’s literally the only thing Vancouver hasn’t won, so by your definition… they’re a great team?

    • hawkeedawg - Jan 9, 2013 at 11:38 PM

You did not defend your players, you called the Sedins “Sisters”, show me a more prolific pair in the NHL since the lockout.

Giroux had 93, not 100 points, so what is your point? What is 7 more? it is 7 more he didn’t get!!

I only get pissed off when people diss players that don’t deserve it. Especially calling them names. I never have and never will go that low.

      • melonheadsdaddy - Jan 10, 2013 at 3:56 PM

you just did it. Giroux doesnt deserve any disrespect. Especially after owning “Sid” last year in the playoffs. If you dont want to come off sounding like an idiot, than dont tell me its so important to score 100 points in a season. Its not. 93 worked just as well. If the flyers had a Great D (not just a good one) and they won the stanley cup, would you be so concerned with Gs 93 points? its a useless stat…stop.

  19. orangeandblack67 - Jan 9, 2013 at 11:15 PM

Thank you parkway but hawk chooses to only look at post lockout results and individual success. With that being said those awards he mentioned all came in one or two good seasons. The Flyers as A TEAM have only missed the playoffs once in the last 19 years but since the lockout they have made the Conf. finals twice and the Stanley Cup finals while the Canucks failed to make the playoffs on two occasions.

    • hawkeedawg - Jan 9, 2013 at 11:45 PM

      Since last lockout…
      Flyers – 1 Division title
      Canucks – 5 Division titles

      Bye Bye

      • woodstakes - Jan 10, 2013 at 1:07 AM

Those division titles are not going to come so easily for you anymore with the Oilers coming of age, the Wild improving, the Avalanche gaining some serious young talent and your team just keeps getting older while others in your division are getting more skilled and younger. Your team is still the team to beat, but you can probably kiss your high percentage chances of President Trophies “Bye Bye” in the VERY near future!

      • mkflyers2k - Jan 10, 2013 at 11:19 AM

And the Flyers went to the conference finals one more time over that span whats your point? The Flyers have won 16 titles since they started. The Canucks won 5 of their 8 since the lockout. The Sedin twins are good but you make it like they are god…….I wouldn’t want them on my team. There are plenty of better players in the league……not just awards wise, actual skill wise.

  24. orangeandblack67 - Jan 10, 2013 at 12:02 AM

  28. bowman20 - Jan 10, 2013 at 12:32 PM

I’m not going to fall into this “Johnson measuring game” everyone seems to get involved in. To throw my thoughts out to this article, I think it would be a mistake for Philadelphia to go after him. I feel that they have a very young and talented team and all they have to do is add some size and strength to the defensive position and that will be enough to help Bryz get back to where he was when he was in Phoenix. Trading a single player to get him would be a major mistake and would definitely come back to bite Philly in the ass.

  29. buffalomafia - Jan 10, 2013 at 1:31 PM

If Philly get him then finally they will win the cup! Thats the only piece of the puzzle Philly is missing is a great goalie!

Now make it happen & beat the Pens & Cynthia Crosby!

  30. jaredphi - Jan 10, 2013 at 8:46 PM

One rumor floating around on some sites has Flyers involved in a 3-way deal with TOR and VAN.

I prefer this eventuality to getting Luongo in PHL as another GT option that’s high-priced and playoff-untenable.

Hopefully if the 3-way deal has merit, Flyers get another D-man. Maybe Gardiner from TOR?

  31. johnstone17 - Jan 11, 2013 at 10:41 AM
