Habs aim to sign Subban before training camp

Despite an undeniably small window to get things done, Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin hopes to sign P.K. Subban before training camp start up, according to the Montreal Gazette’s Dave Stubbs.

Chances are, it won’t be easy to sign such a big-time piece of the puzzle in a week or so.

Teams like the Winnipeg Jets signed restricted free agents such as Evander Kane before the lockout – sometimes with precious little remaining time – but Subban ranks among Jamie Benn and Michael Del Zotto as noteworthy RFAs waiting for new contracts.

As you can see in this post, Subban put the onus on the Habs organization, claiming that the ball is in their court instead of his.

Yet when you look at how much Montreal depends on the 23-year-old defenseman, it’s hard to claim that he lacks any leverage. While his scoring numbers didn’t match his workload increase, Subban played a big role, averaging more than 24 minutes per game.

It’s tough to imagine him being much less integral to the Canadiens’ defense – unless he’s watching from afar without a contract.

So how much do you think he’s worth?

so does the contract include not diving as much and fighting more ?

No but he does get an incentive for injuring players with his skates.

Talk shows in Mtl state the Subban is looking for Drew Doughtry type money (7mil I think he gets) long term deal.
Ouch Far too early for this type of money for a kid that has yet to prove his worth.Lots of questions, pros and cons that only time will tell what kind of player he will be.
I would say a 3 year 11 million would be fair for both sides and provide PK with the time to show what he can do.

I agree, honestly 7mil. per year for Subban is a sick joke

He’s going to get WAY more than a 3 year 11 mil deal. You’re looking at a 4 year 20 mil deal.

I think Montreal is trying to gage interest by awaiting someone to offer sheet him to set the price.

PS – I am saying 4 years because that will get him to 27 and in his prime to get his big money contract.

This is all so silly…Habs finish in last place in the East and he’s busy thinking he’s underpaid. He’s dirty, a team distraction…but left thinking he’s underpaid. Wow…

Here’s a good comparison – Kris Letang, who has far more offensive and defensive ability, is a far better skater, makes $3.5M/year.

Subban is worth 2.75M/year, 3 years, TOPS. Especially with the lower cap – GM’s can’t afford to pay now for what players “might” become in the future. He’s just not worth it right now.

Sure would like to see the ‘Subban to Philly’ rumor to surface again…
