Daly: no plan to expand playoffs

Though we won’t know the exact details of the new CBA until it’s ratified, one thing is for certain: only 16 teams will make the playoffs this season.

“No expansion of the Playoffs being contemplated for this year (and I don’t think any is being contemplated beyond this year either),” deputy commissioner Bill Daly wrote in an email to Puck Daddy.

It was reported last week before a tentative CBA was reached that the NHL and NHLPA were internally discussing a 20-team postseason. But apparently that’s as far it went.

If Daly said it, you can take it to the bank. This is the hill they’ll die on.

That may be the most used line in the NHL from here on out. It will never get Jim Mora “playoffs” big, but it is a classic line.

Now now, Herman Edwards “Hello, you play to win the game” beats all.

aw man, poor habs, sabres, and flyers… they MIGHT have had a chance if they let 2/3 of the league in the playoffs hahaha.

    • elvispocomo - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:42 PM

But then that’s just more teams in the bottom half of the standings the Bruins could lose to in the first round, right? So instead of getting beat by Washington as a #7 seed, Boston could get beat by Buffalo as a #9.

      • bigbadbruins77 - Jan 7, 2013 at 5:26 PM

You mean a Bruins team without their 2011 Hero Nathan Horton. Without Mcquaid, and having Thomas gone all political? Against a team collasping on net and blocking shots, and having Joel Ward kick the puck in OT, which was also clearly goalie interference? This years and future teams will be much better with Tukka taking over, Seguin hitting full form, Dougie Hamilton dropping bombs from the point, and Having Horton/Mcquaid back.

Dude flyers fans are all smiles cause the last time they saw tuka raask he was giving up a 3-0 lead in the most historic playoff loss in the last 35 years.

      • bigbadbruins77 - Jan 7, 2013 at 5:29 PM

That was umm 3 years ago? Completely different teams now. The flyers have gotten much worse, the bruins have got much better. Last time I checked the Bruins have crushed the flyers in what the past 6/7 games? Including a sweep in the playoffs and a 6-0 whooping last year. Tukka isn’t a baby anymore, he’s ready to be the man. The flyers lost Carter/Richards to the Kings, the Bruins have added Seguin and many more. It’s game over for the flyers. Sure Claude Giroux is great, but last time I checked he doesn’t play goalie too ;)

Just saying, glass houses and throwing stones don’t mix.

It doesn’t help when you consider the Flyers were 5th in the East last year and don’t look to have dropped out of the playoff race anytime soon – even with their goaltending.

If the Bruins hadn’t found such a sucker in Burke to take Kessel off their hands, they’d arguably be in much worse shape this year than any of the teams you mentioned.

I’m not sure what you gave thanks for last year, but maybe it should have been that.

      • bigbadbruins77 - Jan 8, 2013 at 10:55 AM

Maybe but that’s part of the game. Bruins have a great gm. Thats why he got a ring in 2011 too. Not just the players ;) and that’s obvious in Burke… Thank you kessel!!!!

      • elvispocomo - Jan 8, 2013 at 2:01 PM

Great, lucky, had a player whose father was second in command at the NHL, whatever. Success has many different contributing factors.

    • hockeyfan28 - Jan 7, 2013 at 11:36 PM

Tim Thomas was the Bruins other teams in the east fear them about as much as the Toronto maple leafs now

      • bigbadbruins77 - Jan 7, 2013 at 11:53 PM

Its tukka time. Betterv goalie anyway

  3. bricktop02 - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:00 PM

They should make it 12 teams make the playoffs.

  4. phipfwe76 - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:02 PM

Good. 16 is too many as it is now.

    • matt8204 - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:05 PM

Not as bad as when 16 out of 21 made the playoffs in the 80’s, though. Six months of regular season games to eliminate five teams? Yeech. Didn’t somebody reach the playoffs one year with fewer than 30 wins and only 50 or so points? The North Stars got to the ’91 Final with only 68 regular season points. Now that was nuts.

  5. matt8204 - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:04 PM

Good. 20 teams are too many to be in the playoffs.

  6. jaredo10 - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:04 PM

8 each conference is more then enough. Leave it alone. The only change they should make is put the Jets in the West and move the Blue Jackets to the east.

  7. northstars17 - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:06 PM

    thank God!

don’t fix it if it ain’t broke!

at least that’s what my sources are telling me! I could be wrong…. its happened before… but doubtful!

I just hope teams are able to “click” and get it in gear fast… or else by the way some teams started last year, they might not even make the playoffs! like the Kings, Bruins, etc.

    • matt8204 - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:09 PM

There will be time to turn it around as long as you don’t dig a massive hole. The ’95 Devils were below .500 for most of the first half of that season and won the Cup.

  8. northstars17 - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:46 PM

I don’t know who those squids were in B’s jerseys playing the Caps last year. Look for the real B’s to show up this post season!

  9. kingfooj - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:47 PM

Anyone know who that is in the pic?

    • Mike Halford - Jan 7, 2013 at 5:13 PM

      Trevor Lewis.
