Let’s play hockey! NHL, NHLPA strike tentative deal to end lockout

It took millions of dollars in lost revenue and paychecks, but early this morning in New York the NHL and NHLPA struck a tentative deal to end the league’s lockout that had been in place since Sept. 15.

“Don Fehr and I are here to tell you that we have reached an agreement on the framework of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, the details of which need to be put to paper,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman told reporters after a marathon bargaining session.

“We have to dot a lot of I’s and cross a lot of T’s. There is still a lot of work to be done, but the basic framework has been agreed upon. We have to go through a ratification process and the Board of Governors has to approve it from the league side and, obviously, the players have to approve it as well.

“We are not in a position to give you information right now about schedule, when we are starting. It’s early in the morning and we have been at this all day and all night, obviously. But, we will be back to you very shortly, hopefully, later today with more information in that regard.

“I would be remiss if we didn’t think thank Scot Beckenbaugh, the deputy director of the FMCS (Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service) in the United States, for his assistance in the mediation process, and I want to thank [NHLPA executive director] Don Fehr, because he and the players’ association, as well as the people that work with me at the league went through a long, tough period, and we still have more work to do, but it’s good to be at this point.”

Added Fehr while standing beside Bettman: “Hopefully within a very few days, the fans can get back to watching people who are skating, not the two of us.”

Much, much more to come…

    Thank you Jesus!!!!!!!

    • dcfan4life - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:53 AM

Only way i can reference this situation to Jesus is how badly i want to nail Bettman and Fehr to a cross for nearly ruining hockey. Even with this agreement, which is 4 months late, the game may still be damaged and may take years to repair. Only time will tell.

      • gallyhatch - Jan 6, 2013 at 10:51 AM

It amazes me how people play right into the owners’ & players’ hands. “Fehr & Bettman are the bad guys, it’s all their fault!!!”

Keep thinking they are the bad guys, not the players & owners. That’s what they want you to think. Me? I’m a little too smart for that.

      • dcfan4life - Jan 6, 2013 at 3:48 PM

How is it the fault of the players and owners and not the 2 men representing them in negotiations? You do realize Fehr and Bettman do and say what the players and owners want them to say and do. But as the leaders they could have had nonstop negotiations until a deal was done. They could have had olive branches and open contact and not weeks between meetings designed to pressure the other side. So a deal gets done last minute. And thats Bettmans and Fehrs fault its 4 months late. Thats most peoples issue with them. And its well deserved.

    Now us as fans c

  4. aaronmeeker0228 - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:12 AM

Now us as fans could we/should we protest by not going into the arenas until the start of the second period in order for the owners/players to look up and realize the fans ultimately control this???

    • lesleyvissersfacelift - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:25 AM

Wouldn’t have an effect since you still paid to watch three periods of hockey. Maybe boycotting the first half of the season would have the effect you’re looking for.

      • aaronmeeker0228 - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:29 AM

Agree that financially it wouldnt change things but embarrassing for sure. TV would look incredible and the story from it would permeate news

    • hank10 - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:27 AM

I’d like to see either (1) no one show up for the first game, or (2) no cheering or applauding when players take the ice or goals are scored or (3) walk out mid-way through the 2nd period.

    • lostone49 - Jan 6, 2013 at 8:44 AM

And miss my Los Angeles Kings raising the banner?? HELL NO!!

  5. sdelmonte - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:12 AM

I won’t believe it’s real till the puck drops. And I suspect everyone will say “why didn’t you do this in September?” But I welcome this news.

If only I had any reason to be optimistic about the Islanders.

  6. raveman213 - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:20 AM

Finally….. I can say…. LETS GO FLYERS!!! And if the 2 buyouts in the new CBA is true…. please buyout the Bryz….. please??? Send him to NASA so he can go into space and never come back (along with a monkey).

  7. riceforpres27 - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:21 AM

FINALLY!! Was hopin the lack of news yesterday was a good sign!

  8. crmgoodness - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:23 AM

Boo hoo…We can’t give you details because we’ve been working oh so hard at this…

Eff you Bettman and eff you Fehr. If ths press conference was 3 months ago I’d cut you some slack…Take your time…in fact take as much time as you want…It’ll take a while to craft that Winter Asterisk jersey…I’ll stick to watching my mite and squirt for now thanks

    • tlndma - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:37 AM

Don’t use that language around the kids.

I like the comment about the asterisk. I guess it’ll be about 45 games and then the playoffs. Will there be more energy for the playoffs due to less games?

      • crmgoodness - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:47 AM

        Thanks for the parenting tip…

Look…my point is simply that I’m not giddy with glee that they are back…this is the third time in what 10 years that they’ve held us hostage over our game and our money…I’m just not real eager to give them a whole lot of credit for all of their “hard work”…

Will I watch eventually? Of course…but I’m not rushing back to watch and buy tickets and let them know this sort of thing is ok…

  9. kingfooj - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:33 AM

Northstars17 might need to reconsider those sources he was talking about

I just told my 3 year old son he is now cleared to wear his Caps jersey that has been collecting dust in his closet for months and months now. Couldn’t be more excited.

    • bmoreredfury311 - Jan 6, 2013 at 9:32 AM

I say no matter what, you always should rock your red, but in this case i can agree… but that’s besides the point.. I say you still fire Bettman, so this B.S doesnt happen again.
      GO CAPS!!!!!!

  12. buffalomafia - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:43 AM

Lets go Buffalo! Flyers still dont have a goalie!

  13. chill1184 - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:44 AM

    About damm time!

  14. dhillca - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:51 AM

    Who cares

  15. dcfan4life - Jan 6, 2013 at 7:57 AM

Half a season, no preseason most likely, and poor team play is to be expected now. We all may be excited to have hockey back, but it isnt going to be good hockey until the teams find their grooves again which may not even be this season. Im calling it right now, teams that make the playoffs will have good goaltenders and defenses. I see it very likey there will be few if any high powered offenses in such a shortened season.

    • jcmeyer10 - Jan 6, 2013 at 8:22 AM

They’ll find their grooves in time for the hundred team playoff.

    • hockeyflow33 - Jan 6, 2013 at 1:48 PM

So teams won’t be able to play together in 50 game season because of rust? Wow…..

  16. jayreiterman - Jan 6, 2013 at 8:05 AM

To northstars17: now don’t you dear write something……just shut the f… Up

Here we go!!!!!! LETS GO CAPS!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!

  19. omniusprime - Jan 6, 2013 at 8:31 AM

So sad that the NHL strike will end, worst thing to happen to dimwitted NHL fans. Hopefully they didn’t go with that 20 team playoff format which would place several losing teams in the playoffs. MLB expanded by two teams and still only have a small number of teams in the playoffs, as it should be. Half a season will be a farce as will the playoffs.

Hockey Stick – Apply Directly to the Forehead!!!

  20. ludacrish05 - Jan 6, 2013 at 8:33 AM

Northstar was such a joke talking all that crap hahahahaha

  21. steelers88 - Jan 6, 2013 at 9:28 AM

    Let’s Go Pens!

  22. knowsalittleaboutfoorball - Jan 6, 2013 at 9:34 AM

Best thing the fan can do to protest is not show up. The people who run hockey are idiots who could have made hockey a relevant sport but just set it back 5 years. They would not know a good thing if it slapped them in the face. Bettman and Fehr should both be fired for not seeing the great future hockey had.

    • holtbeast - Jan 6, 2013 at 10:23 AM

Bettman takes the blame for any effects on the future of hockey; Fehr’s job is to run a union, not worry about league revenues or fan sentiment.

      • gallyhatch - Jan 6, 2013 at 11:02 AM

Thank you Holtbeast. People who blame Fehr for this whole mess obviously don’t understand what he was hired to do.

& Bettman, well he’s still a puppet of the owners. He wouldn’t have his job if some of them didn’t like what he was doing.

As I said in a previous comment, blaming this lockout on these two individuals is not only nonsensical, but it also plays into the owners & players hands. It is their fault, and in that order too. Owners first, and players second. The owners & players WANT the fans to blame DB & DF so they can be the good guys.

        Don’t be such sheep!!!
(Sorry to use the blomfield / Joey line, but it’s appropriate here.

  27. cspsrbums - Jan 6, 2013 at 9:48 AM

It’s hard to tell people not to watch or go to games because that’s what we all have been waiting for games, but you don’t have to buy any NHL merchandise that will still hit them all hard. Boycott all merchandise this year. While I won’t go to any games I will watch on TV LETS GO CAPS

  28. materialman80 - Jan 6, 2013 at 9:54 AM

Most people could care less. Hockey continues to shoot itself in the foot. Most people are sick and tired off all professional athletes cry and whine about needing more money. It makes everybody absolutely sick to their stomach. It’s hard to figure out who is more greedy, the players or the owners. It’s probably a toss up.

Best part of the agreement… Gary bettman won’t have to do his job for another 10 years

  38. 8man - Jan 6, 2013 at 10:52 AM

Heh. Placed an order last night for $200 worth of Bruins gear in a hopeful gesture. Nice. Go Bs!

    • kirkmcleansbaby - Jan 6, 2013 at 11:16 AM

Why would you do that RIGHT AWAY!! At least make them wait on your money for a bit…….come on now! *facepalm*

    • mountainmantride - Jan 6, 2013 at 12:21 PM

You are the reason this idiotic lockout stuff works for the owners and players. You just can’t wait to stuff the players’ and owners’ wallets with your hard earned money not matter how bad they treat you.

      • hockeyflow33 - Jan 6, 2013 at 1:53 PM

Or most of us are adults and realize this isn’t a personal attack on fans but employers vs employees in a labor dispute.

  39. govtminion - Jan 6, 2013 at 11:41 AM

I have no intention of buying tickets or merchandise until I get a new CBA with the league and its players- until they show me a reason why I should be happy about this, after all they’ve done the past few months, I can’t find a reason to give them any of my hard-earned and increasingly-stretched money.

Glad you’re back to work, make it worth my while to care now.

  41. tonys4 - Jan 6, 2013 at 11:51 AM

Who gives a rat’s arse , Gary the retard n Bill ‘there’s nothing to talk about’ Daly have shot the sport back to irrelevance after a season last year of great momentum where there actually was a buzz about hockey for the first time in 20 years. HBO 24-7, winter classic, LA kings winning the cup new fans from the NBA lockout, all gone because of their greed and total disregard of the fans. I for one, a life long hockey fan, will not give those cretins the satisfaction of giving them my attention. The Stanley Cup should not be given out after a non legitimate shortened season like the one they’re proposing. Starting the season in January? Puh-lease.

    • mountainmantride - Jan 6, 2013 at 12:24 PM

Amen brother. Well said. All the energy and goodwill built up by the NHL over last several years gone in a New York minute.

I have season tickets- so my money has been sitting in Wirtz pocket since last spring. I will attend and cheer on my Blackhawks!!’ won’t buy merch- but will support the vendors that have lost so much revenue due to these selfish SOB’s. I would love to see the stadiums half full for the first few weeks- however this season is going to be hard to miss. Every game is that much more important! Can’t Wait!! LET’S GO HAWKS (USA!!USA!!)

So the NHL decided to end this silly and unnecessary lockout in the middle of the night. Fitting. Great. Bettman can still kiss my BLEEP for allowing this silly lockout to take place.
