Report: Union regains power to file disclaimer, won’t act yet

The NHL and NHLPA have been engaged in negotiations for the better part of the day and the latest session might not end anytime soon, according to ESPN and TSN’s Pierre LeBrun.

Meanwhile, the players’ latest vote to grant the union’s executive board the power to file a disclaimer of interest has ended.

The exact results are not yet known, but the Newark Star-Ledger’s Rich Chere is reporting that the NHLPA now has the power to dissolve if it so wishes.

It’s no surprise that the vote was successful, given that it passed by an overwhelming margin the first time around. The NHLPA needed to vote on the matter again because it decided against filing before the original Jan. 2 deadline.

That being said, it looks like the union won’t immediately exercise its regained authority. Instead, they will continue to focus on the negotiations for now, according to RDS’ Renaud Lavoie.

It is believed that the two sides have less than a week to come to an agreement or what’s left of the 2012-13 campaign will be lost.
