Good news today? Players and owners to meet face-to-face with mediator

Jan 5, 2013, 1:34 PM EDT

NHL labor talks with federal mediator Scot Beckenbaugh involved have picked up enough that the two sides are meeting face-to-face this afternoon.

TSN’s Darren Dreger reports from sources saying that today could turn out to be a “very good day” in regards to talks. He also says anticipation at the NHLPA’s hotel is picking up and the two sides are down to “minimal issues.”

Take this positive talk with the typical grain of salt we’ve gotten used to using through all this. That said, with the NHLPA potentially (likely?) filing for disclaimer after 6 p.m. ET tonight, perhaps the pressure is on the NHL and players’ union to get something squared away sooner than not.

Where have you heard that they would potentially file the disclaimer after 6 tonight? That article linked said no internal time line and if talks are moving along there would be no reason to file…?

    • stakex - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:25 PM

Well the vote will be done by 6PM…. so the potential is there. Of course that doesn’t mean they actually will, and I doubt they would if the positive vibes are still in the air.

Whoa Omg please is cold as hell up here on the Canadian border. .. Please give me something to look forward to in the long winter.

      White walkers and wildlings.

  3. jaredo10 - Jan 5, 2013 at 1:58 PM

    lets get her done….

  4. bubblehead22 - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:08 PM

Hate to be a downer but I can’t get around the fact that Fehr will somehow screw this up…

  5. steelers88 - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:11 PM

So basically if there isn’t a deal done by 6pm the season is screwed.

  6. hy3rid28 - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:15 PM

wasnt dreger the same guy that said the NHL was losing optimism at 10 last night, you can’t have it both ways… with that said let’s get this done!!!!

  7. paledevil - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:19 PM

Somebody do the world a favor..Teach Blomfeld and Joey about twitter so they can straighten this mess out….

  8. stlbluesfan - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:22 PM

We have been down this same “optimistic” road for months, I will believe it when I see it!!

    • jtrain1966 - Jan 5, 2013 at 9:21 PM

Agreed ! I’m from the ” Show Me ” state, SHOW ME !

  9. steelers88 - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:24 PM

This whole NHL thing is so confusing if they are progressing in talks why would the NHLPA file for a disclaimer? Just get a deal done!

    • stakex - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:26 PM

They probably won’t. The NHLPA vote to give Fehr the ability to file the DoI ends tonight at 6PM. That does not mean he WILL file a DoI just yet.

      • stlbluesfan - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:33 PM

They are just using it to try and force the NHL’s hand. At this point they dont need a mediator, just lock them in a room and tell them to figure it out. Enough of this crap already!!

  10. antkowiak666 - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:33 PM

the US wins Gold and to cap off a wonderful day, let’s please get a done deal tonite.

  11. dbarnes79 - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:40 PM

I’ve heard today is make or break. Either a deal is done or sensing one is near, if not the NHLPA will file disclaimer.

  12. jakreidler - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:48 PM

If you all remember, before the last meltdown, there were a lot of players who were ready to take the NHL’s deal before Don Fehr convinced them to hold out. The league has made even more concessions since then. I think they’re just trying to get as much as they possibly can right up until the deadline, then they’ll take whatever is on the table.

I may eat those words, but that’s my prediction..

  13. steelers88 - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:49 PM

Why didn’t the NHL start negotiating right after the NHL draft? Why did they wait for September?

    • mp1131211 - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:57 PM

There are endless “Why’s” in this scenario that could have improved this process………

    • jakreidler - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:57 PM

They probably wanted the threat of actually losing money as leverage.

    • jtrain1966 - Jan 5, 2013 at 9:24 PM

Because, the NHLPA didn’t want to .

  14. jimw81 - Jan 5, 2013 at 2:59 PM

league is terrified of the disclaimer

  15. joeyashwi - Jan 5, 2013 at 3:03 PM

At this point in ready to put aside all my hate for Bettman and all my anger at both sides. I’m ready to forget this whole lockout and how meaningless it was. I just want to watch hockey! I’m excited to see how the Wild will gel together. I’m excited to see who the next surprise team is. I’m a sucker! I can’t hate the league anymore! Sign the deal and I forgive all. Your time is running out!

  16. steelers88 - Jan 5, 2013 at 3:14 PM

Well said. If there is an agreement I can’t wait to see what the penguins will look like without Jordan Staal.

  17. bbk1000 - Jan 5, 2013 at 3:20 PM

    Man I hate Bettman…..every time I see him I want to puke….

  18. dannythebisforbeast - Jan 5, 2013 at 3:34 PM

NHL was intent on a partial season. It will get done in time for a 50ish game season. Just when football ends in the US.

  19. wingsfan13 - Jan 5, 2013 at 3:36 PM

Well we have all been down this road before!! Let’s just get a deal done, like everyone else on here I just miss hockey!! Let’s play already

  20. pooinyourface - Jan 5, 2013 at 3:41 PM

if there is a season and Bettman shows up at the end to present the Cup I will laugh so hard.

    • jakreidler - Jan 5, 2013 at 4:08 PM

As hard as I’m laughing at the picture of him they used for the article about coming off of the $60mil cap?

  21. semin28 - Jan 5, 2013 at 3:44 PM

    I love you guys

  22. buffalo65 - Jan 5, 2013 at 4:19 PM

    Headline tommorrow. Fehr wins!!!
Without him, players are screwed. He did a great job. Time to play hockey. We all promise to watch between the super bowl and spring training.

  23. mungman69 - Jan 5, 2013 at 4:25 PM

Yes, I’ll believe it when I see it. Bunch of crap. Idiots. Jerks. Creeps losing lots of money. This whole process is stupid. Cancel the f#ckin season already.

  24. buffalo65 - Jan 5, 2013 at 4:38 PM

No they will play, we will cheer. Hockey will still have the same passionate 5% of the sporting market watching.

  25. habssuck - Jan 5, 2013 at 4:46 PM

Could be a good day? Heard that way too many times to get excited anymore. If the recent history will repeat its self, we can expect a big setback tomorrow.

  26. purp1234 - Jan 5, 2013 at 6:35 PM

if they consider 48 games a full season this year…I wonder if Center Ice will too?
